The problem with TV networks is that they get something that works, they want more of the same. This is why we have four Law and Orders, three CSI's and now two NCIS. Something works, let's make it work again. And Again.
The now defunct WB network had a hit with Smallville, so they figured, why not do another comic book TV series. Can't do "Batman the Early Years", that would be too derivative. I know, let's do a Batman series without Batman. Or the Joker. Or any of the cool villains we might want to use in a movie! (Come on, they have to forgive them for George Clooney's Kevlar Nipples eventually!)
So they took the spin off comic book, "Birds Of Prey" and did a series based on that. And it flopped after 11 episodes.
Now some things I didn't care for. Harley Quinn as a criminal mastermind? Come on! But the interaction of the core trio of heroes was pretty interesting...
