Family traditions... really ought to be broken
28 June 2008
Warning: Spoilers
Family traditions is the link between all three plots going on here. Chronologically speaking, there first is Paige's decision to use the infamous truth-spell on her new boyfriend. That girl seems bent on catching up on every mistake her sisters made without her. I winced at first, thinking that once again the story was recycling old ideas, but the development is quite different from that of season 1, although equally fair in a cruel way. And Daryl finally reappears from wherever he has been since Cole died.

Then there is Wyatt's very important Wiccaning ceremony, involving a blessing from all the Halliwell matriarchs. Now the series finally addresses something that has been bugging me for very long, meaning the rather sexist treatment of men in the magical world. Wyatt's gender goes against all family traditions and predictions, to such extent that Piper actually has to apologize for his being male ! Although this episode tries to blame this exclusively on Grams's biased view of marriage, I think the issue goes deeper than that, but we'll see if it pops up again in later episodes.

And finally : Grams's past mistakes. Imagine that Grams fell in love with a demon and then had to vanquish him. And he's back from the dead. And she's got to kill him again. See what I meant about family traditions ? The terrible irony of it all is that Grams is responsible for the Necromancer's arrival.

One last remark though : what do they feed Wyatt to have him grow so fast ? Last episode he was a chubby baby, now he looks almost like a toddler !
