Laverne & Shirley (1976–1983)

Give Us Any Chance We'll Break It

Laverne & Shirley was a spin off from Happys Days. Early on it was a very good show. It's Midwest base was fresh & the 2 brewery babes actually had a fair amount of talent. Laverne always played the woman with the rodeo-dough body though I actually liked her curves. Penny Marshall played her understated but never without an L on her blouse OR sweater.

Cindy Williams Shirley was a counter balance. A woman built like a 2 by 4 who always seemed hyped up on something. Her acting and comedic timing always seemed to be right on.

Lenny & Squiggy were those guys that always hang around the chicks but never score. They were always the butt of Laverne & Shirley's jokes. Their support & timing produced some of the funnier moments of the show.

This show was OK until they moved to California from Milwaukee. Then it was like a writers strike as for some reason the scripts seemed to think it was just funny that the girls were in California, & they didn't need to be funny because of the locale. Wrong move to put it kindly by the folks producing this show.

Carmine Ragusa (the big Ragu) actually became the Fonzie of this show. Marshall & Williams never got along during this shows run. I am not sure why but it appears Williams was the bigger loser when this got canceled. Without Marshall's support, Cindy Williams career has gone nowhere since she left this series.

I always remember the Max Shotz portrait at the brewery in Milwaukee and his quote underneath - "Get Back To Work" This show is indeed the strongest of the Happy Days spin offs.
