Review of Cuba '58

Cuba '58 (1962)
9/10
colourful propagandist

I love this film. Its flaws is I also its strengths. You either dislike the didactics about Marxist revolution as invariably right or enjoy the over top worshipping of Marx and revolution. Batista is presented as a pantomime villain to be driven out by the heroic freedom fighters of Castro and joyous tearful people of Havana celebrate their liberators. USA is attacked for supporting Batista. But as its a Cuban documentary if you dislike the politics then just enjoy the Cuban settings and atmosphere. There should be more of this as the directors have made a documentary looking at different experiences of those in the revolution from a couple of years earlier. Its the Marxist influence that has made this into a piece of Marxist propaganda when its wider appeal would by the exotic location and flavours. At a time when USA foreign policy is being denounced, a remake of this with less didactics and more Cuban soul will have fans.
