Enjoyable adolescent movie from Indonesia with Hollywood taste
22 November 2005
I knew this movie from the web site of Jakarta Shimbun, a newspaper for Japanese living in Indonesia. It was explained as a big hit that breaks long stagnation of Indonesian film industry. Though I am not interested in adolescent movies, I borrowed the DVD in curiosity to know young life in the country of world's largest Muslim population.

And wow, I was surprised. It is an enjoyable film with Hollywood like taste: tight friendship of girls, domestic violence, dating at a live music club, the breathtaking finish, and etc.

Dian Sastrowardoyo, the lead actress as Cinta, is very nice. Not just beautiful, but with sensitive expressions and cute performance. She has a potential to be the Indonesian version of Meg Ryan.

So, is this the real life of high school kids in Indonesia? I have made a short business trip to Jakarta only once, and I saw most of women in Jakarta wearing like a Japanese instead of wearing a scarf. Cinta's home may be wealthy. Her room is much better than my son's. Her high school is co-ed though the classes are separate. And eventually, a girl confesses love to a boy. Perhaps the reason why this movie has won big endorsement from Indonesian youths was, rather than portraying real high-school life in Indonesia but it shows new high-school life that is reachable for them.
