Fame (1982–1987)
I Wouldn`t Watch It Now
24 June 2003
FAME was a show that was very popular with my peers as a 15 year old in 1982. I used to watch it myself and did enjoy it for the most part though I wouldn`t confess to anyone I did . The appeal was that it was a very feelgood show that would always start with one of the students composing a ditty then everyone joining in , next thing you know the whole fame academy would have massed ranks of singers dancing about in a real funky way . Then we`d get a storyline which nearly always involved the black kid Leroy Johnson and domestic issues . Then we`d get a serious solo number at the end of the episode , everyone would be friends again and Leroy would live happily ever after , or at least untill the next episode .

I should point out that I`m referring to the first two series because I didn`t realise the show continued untill as late as 1987 , but by the time the last series was aired on the BBC it had been scheduled opposite CORONATION STREET on early evening Wednesdays which is a BBC graveyard slot so I`ve no idea what the later episodes were like and I have very nasty feeling that if I watched an episode of FAME as a 36 year old I`d find it camp and cheesy so I`ll keep the show as a distant teenage memory
