When Alicia Vikander was submitted for and won an Oscar nomination in the Best Supporting Actress category for The Danish Girl (2015) some critical eyebrows were raised. It was alleged that Vikander should have been nominated for Best Actress, but that Focus Features decided to category shop and put forward Vikander in a less competitive category to increase the odds of a nomination and perhaps a win.
It has been argued that Vikander was, in fact, a lead actress in the film as she had more screen time and more dialogue than costar Eddie Redmayne who was nominated for Best Actor.
