Has Harry Ambrose finally found some semblance of inner peace?
The series finale of USA Network’s The Sinner seemed to suggest that much: that the retired detective would be Ok once he left Hanover Island. Though it seemed unlikely that he would reunite with ex-girlfriend Sonya — she didn’t answer his call earlier in the episode — the Percy Muldoon case had taught him that he needed to find a way to cope with his lingering guilt surrounding the Season 3 death of Jamie Burns, which had continued to eat at him throughout his time on the island.

"Another story of male overreach."
Surely, those are not innocuous words. Said early in The Sinner Season 4 Episode 1, Sonya was reading them from a fable about Hanover Island.
As that's the island where Harry Ambrose and his girlfriend, Sonya, have gone to refresh after the events of The Sinner Season 3, it's hard to dismiss them.
If anybody were going to find themselves embroiled in a mystery while attempting to get some R&r, it would be Harry Ambrose.
If you watch The Sinner online you know Harry was not only deeply affected by Jamie Burns's death, but he was always just deeply affected.
On top of everything else that we had learned about him, taking that whacked-out trip that Jamie sent him on only seems to have made it worse.
But Jamie also connected Harry with Sonya through sheer fate. It appears to be a lasting union, but you...

I’m beginning to think Harry Ambrose is too old for this ish.
The Sinner‘s Season 4 opener picks up a year after the Jamie Burns case, and the since-retired detective (again played by Bill Pullman) is still haunted by visions of the night he shot and killed the sociopath. (He continues to suffer from post-traumatic stress, and he’s only recently weaned off of antidepressants.) He and his partner Sonya (fellow returnee Jessica Hecht) travel to Hanover Island in northern Maine for some much needed rest and relaxation, but an unexpected tragedy occurs almost immediately upon their arrival. Just wait until you get a load of The Sinner Season 4 when it airs on USA Network tonight.
As Harry Ambrose, Bill Pullman leads another extraordinary cast setting up the latest mystery, and the very talented Frances Fisher plays a significant role.
Frances plays Meg Muldoon, the matriarch of a prominent family in the fishing business on the island where Harry and Sonya (Jessica Hecht) are taking a restorative vacation to flush away the horrors they suffered from Jamie Burns.
Unfortunately, it's not going to be that easy, and Meg will go head-to-head with Harry, and that means Frances knows all the good stuff about the upcoming season.
But don't worry. While Frances was kind enough to chat with us on the phone, she didn't reveal anything that would spoil your enjoyment of the season.
Frances was calling from Santa Fe, New Mexico, where she's filming a movie titled Rust with Alec Baldwin.

“Are we really living in the moment?” muses SAG Awards nominee Bill Pullman about one of the central themes contemplated by the third season of USA Network’s anthology crime drama “The Sinner.” Watch our exclusive video interview with Pullman above.
In “The Sinner,” Pullman stars as Detective Harry Ambrose, who investigates bizarre murder cases over season-long arcs from a uniquely empathetic point of view. Harry’s tortured past and emotional baggage weigh on him heavily as he identifies and uncovers the psychology that drives and motivates a killer’s actions.

The show premiered in 2017, centering on a troubled mother (Emmy nominee and executive producer Jessica Biel) who snaps and murders a man without provocation. In 2001, Eric McCormack made history by winning the lead comedy actor Emmy for portraying a gay man on “Will & Grace.” Back then, the challenge was reflecting the gay experience as accurately as his co-star Debra Messing’s plotlines as a straight character in the NBC sitcom about two best friends.
“We needed to show that the most accurate way to represent those two relationships was that they were always equal — which, probably, they weren’t in the old days,” McCormack says. “It was easier to have handsome guys come on and date Deb Messing. Mine were handled with a lot more attention and a lot of being careful.”
Today, as McCormack is eligible for a final nomination as the titular Will, his character is joined by a new class. The race includes Ben Platt, who portrays sexually fluid teenager-turned-early 20s politician Payton Hobart in Netflix’s “The Politician”; Matt Bomer’s Jamie Burns,...

“Unlike a lot of procedural thrillers,” muses showrunner Derek Simonds, “with ‘The Sinner’ you learn right from the start of the season who committed the crime and the how and where and whom,” he explains about his USA Network anthology crime drama. “It gives us a great opportunity to focus on the psychology and the psyche of the characters.” Watch our exclusive video interview with Simonds above.

[Note: The following review contains spoilers for the ending of “The Sinner” Season 3 finale.]
Bill Pullman spent his 66th birthday watching a fictional character die right in front of him. Through scheduling plans and coincidences, that day last December happened to be the final day of shooting for Season 3 of the USA series “The Sinner.” Filming the final scene between Jamie Burns (Matt Bomer) and Detective Harry Ambrose (Pullman) made for an interesting blend of urgency and focus, with a little bit of celebration on the side.

The Sinner finale stages an epic showdown between Bill Pullman’s Detective Harry Ambrose and Matt Bomer’s Jamie Burns — a showdown so terrifying that it leaves the survivor permanently scarred.
Season 3’s mind games culminate in a truly sickening turn of events. After Jamie kills Morris, he makes sure to leave one last paper fortune teller in the captain’s jacket pocket, in an envelope marked for Ambrose. The detective opens the first flap and finds Morris’ name crossed out. Other names that aren’t crossed out are Sonya, Melanie and Eli.

That was batshit crazy.
On The Sinner Season 3 Episode 6, Ambrose doubled down on Jamie's guilt by gliding under Jamie's wing and putting his life in danger.
He sure goes over and above the call of duty to get his man, doesn't he?!
To be clear, if I knew someone murdered a couple of people and was on the edge of doing it again, I'd be hard-pressed to let them wander around, and I'm not even a detective.
So if you were Harry Ambrose and Jamie Burns was like an unlit match waiting to strike, it would probably be a no-brainer to hunt the man with every ounce of your being.
And Jamie really needs to be stopped.
It's not bad enough that he's a murderer, but he's also a father to a newborn and teaches school to vulnerable teenagers seeking guidance.
No part of his life should be smooth sailing after what he's done,...

Harry Ambrose has gotten in over his head in the past. He gets too personally involved in his cases, and he skirts the edges of the law to solve them.
But on The Sinner Season 3 Episode 5, with each misstep he makes, Ambrose is digging a deeper hole for himself.
And just when it seems he can't possibly do anything any more stupid than he already had, he attacked Jamie in front of his grandson.
A few of you have mentioned that The Sinner Season 3 is too debased for you. It's too out there without a character you can root for anymore.

People get themselves into some really messed up predicaments, and spinning out of control becomes their reality.

Even his move to the quaint little New York (and fictional) town of Dorchester didn't do him any favors in the reset and relaxation department.

Something is always driving Ambrose to investigate. Is it his personal unhappiness? Is he so devoted to the job because he derives pleasure from pain?

Matt Bomer has gone to dark places in “American Horror Story” and beyond, but his role on “The Sinner” pushed him to a totally different space.
“This is the most challenging role I’ve had, but it’s also the most rewarding as an artist,” Bomer told Variety at the show’s Season 3 premiere Monday at the London in West Hollywood. “It asked the most of me and demanded the most of me … It definitely took a psychological toll, a physical toll, but I think that’s what you hope for as an actor.”
In this season of the dark thriller, executive produced by Jessica Biel, Bomer plays Jamie Burns, a man thought to be a model citizen of Dorchester, whose secrets start to come to the surface after a deadly car accident.
