House of the Dragon is gearing up for its second season, and there’s plenty to look forward to. The HBO prequel picks up moments after the dramatic conclusion of Season 1, promising more monumental battles and fiery dragon encounters. A Complex Start To The Season Emma D’Arcy, who reprises their role as Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen, expressed the intense demands of their character. You have no option, they said. You have to have great stamina. It’s a marathon. D’Arcy, alongside Olivia Cooke, who plays Queen Alicent Hightower, both referenced the emotional and physical challenges behind their roles. It’s coming to terms...

Two households, both alike in dignity, in fair Westeros where we lay our scene. It’s a Targaryen civil war in House of the Dragon Season 2, a war that will determine the fates of the ruling family of the Seven Kingdoms, and the stakes could not be more Shakespearean if George R. R. Martin tried. The Game of Thrones spinoff returns for its highly anticipated second season on Sunday, June 16 at 9/8c on HBO and Max (it’s already been renewed for Season 3), and with the new season comes the aftermath of the tragic death of Lucerys Velaryon (Elliot Grihault) seen in the Season 1 finale. Luke’s uncle, Aemond (Ewan Mitchell), didn’t mean to kill his nephew, but his lust for retribution over his lost eye in childhood fueled his attack on dragon back. Vhagar went rogue and killed the young boy and his dragon, Arrax. Had this not occurred,...

A return to Westeros is imminent with the second season of Max’s House of the Dragon arriving this summer. The prequel series, based on George R. Plot: Westeros is on the brink of a bloody civil war with the Green and Black Councils fighting for King Aegon and Queen Rhaenyra, respectively.
Review: It was always going to be an uphill climb for House of the Dragon to live up to the peak of Game of Thrones. With an uneven first season but still better than the ending of the series that inspired it, House of the Dragon concluded its first season with the beginning of a civil war between Targaryens vying for the Iron Throne. Despite solid performances from Paddy Considine, Matt Smith, Emma D’Arcy, and Olivia Cooke, House of the Dragon‘s sprawling time jumps and reliance on dragons rather than intriguing characters worth investing in made it hard to care about what happened until the war began. Even though it is two episodes shorter than the previous season, House of the Dragon begins with...

At the heart of House of the Dragon‘s second season is an unresolvable tension, and I don’t mean the one between the Greens and the Blacks.
On one hand, both Rhaenyra (Emma D’Arcy), the daughter that Viserys I (Paddy Considine) chose to succeed him on the Iron Throne, and Alicent (Olivia Cooke), mother of the son (Tom Glynn-Carney’s Aegon II) who actually did, want desperately to avoid all-out war, or at least to minimize the destruction when it comes. It’s an eminently reasonable and humane stance, held by two of the show’s more reasonable and humane main characters. Of course we want what they want.
On the other hand … what, we’re going to tune into a show about a succession crisis involving dragons and not root to see them burn each other to a crisp?
This contradiction is not new or unique to House of the Dragon...

The year is 2019. The decade-long saga for the Iron Throne had finally culminated. The people of Westeros had a new king. A new era had begun. But not for Game of Thrones – the final season of the show was, for many fans, a stain that ruined the franchise itself.
The fandom evaporated. A phenomenon at its peak, the show had become a mere shadow of its previous self. But HBO was developing a plan of its own to salvage the show’s legacy. And it might be set to kick into action come 2025.

House of the Dragon finally returns to HBO this weekend, and viewers already have some good news about the show's future. The cable network has renewed the fantasy drama series for a third season.
Based on George R.R. Martin's Fire & Blood, the House of the Dragon series is set 200 years before the events in Game of Thrones and follows the House Targaryen, which is divided into two factions that both want to rule. The factions are led by Prince Daemon Targaryen (Matt Smith) and Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D’Arcy).

The first season of “House of the Dragon,” HBO’s prequel to “Game of Thrones” and the first spinoff in network history, was widely considered a success. But it was also, in essence, 10 hours of set-up, speeding through decades of context to take audiences to the brink of the Westerosi civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons. Despite its many strengths, the show began as a structural oxymoron: too rushed to do the patient plotting and character-building that gave its parent show such a strong foundation; too slow to sink its teeth into the real meat of its story until the final stretch of episodes, which saw the death of King Viserys (Paddy Considine) and the formation of factions around his two potential heirs.

How've you spent the intervening year and a half since "House of the Dragon" last hit the airwaves? Practicing your sword-fighting and dragon-riding skills? Brushing up on the complex and disturbingly incestuous Targaryen family tree? Or, for those who are way too obsessive about these sorts of things, perhaps you've been revisiting the entire first season or even diving into all the most relevant chapters from author George R.R. Martin's "Fire & Blood" novel, which serves as the basis for HBO's "Game of Thrones" prequel series. It's certainly been a lengthy amount of time to keep invested viewers twisting in the wind since the season 1 finale bowed in October of 2022. But for all those waiting anxiously to see how would-be queen Rhaenyra (Emma D'Arcy) and Dowager Queen Alicent (Olivia Cooke) would proceed after the first shot fired in the civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons, well, the wait is nearly over.

This post contains spoilers for "House of the Dragon" season 1.
The terrifying shadow of war looms large over the Targaryens in HBO's "House of the Dragon," and if things weren't already dire, they're about to get much worse. The show's season 1 finale ended on a rather grim note. After both Aemond (Ewan Mitchell) and Lucerys (Elliot Grihault) approach the Baratheons for an alliance and the latter is denied support, a tense chase ensues on dragonback where Aemond and Vhagar hound Lucerys and Arrax. Although Aemond simply intended this chase to be an intimidation tactic, his dragon defies him and devours Lucerys and Arrax, leaving a devastated Rhaenyra (Emma D'Arcy) enraged and ready for war. Up until that point, the ever-evolving familial in-fighting and political scheming had already created a schism within House Targaryen, but this final, unintended tragedy propels everyone involved into a dark, violent period that is bound to...

After the less-than-stellar series finale of "Game of Thrones," many were skeptical of HBO's decision to pursue the prequel series "House of the Dragon," and firmly believed the show would be an expensive flop. Fortunately, not only is "House of the Dragon" rivetingly good television but it's also proven to be a massive hit for the premium cable network and its streaming platform, Max. Centered on the events of the Targaryen Civil War, colloquially known as the Dance of the Dragons, the first season showcased the events leading up to the passing of King Viserys I Targaryen (Paddy Considine) and the kingdom's refusal to accept his chosen successor, Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D'Arcy), as the rightful heir.

HBO has renewed “House of the Dragon” for a third season, even before the second season’s premiere on June 17. This “Game of Thrones” spinoff series, co-created by Ryan Condal and George R.R. Martin, has been a major success for the network.
It recorded the largest premiere audience ever for an original series on HBO and HBO Max, averaging 29 million viewers per episode across both linear and streaming platforms. The show was quickly renewed for a second season just a week after its debut.
“House of the Dragon” is based on Martin’s book “Fire & Blood” and chronicles the history of the Targaryen dynasty in Westeros, set nearly 200 years before the events of “Game of Thrones” and about 100 years after the Targaryens unified the Seven Kingdoms.
The returning cast for Season 2 includes Matt Smith, Olivia Cooke, Emma D’Arcy, Eve Best, Steve Toussaint, Fabien Frankel, Ewan Mitchell, Tom Glynn-Carney, Sonoya Mizuno and others.

Send the ravens! Not only is civil war embroiling the entire continent of Westeros as a bunch of weird, blonde-haired, incest-loving white people fight over control of a big seat with a bunch of swords melted on it, but the epic story is now set to continue for the foreseeable future. Mere days before season 2 of "House of the Dragon" is scheduled to premiere later this week, HBO announced that it has officially renewed the hit "Game of Thrones" spin-off/prequel series for a third season (presumably) full of even more fire and blood.
The show is based on author George R.R. Martin's fictional historical retelling of the greatest threat to ever overwhelm the Targaryen dynasty, titled "Fire & Blood," and there's certainly plenty of material to sustain at least another season. Things get a little trickier after that, however, should the network be inclined to keep the violent, good times rolling.

Demonstrating the formidable strength of HBO’s “Game of Thrones” empire, the network has renewed “House of the Dragon” for Season 3, in advance of its Season 2 premiere on June 16.
The “Game of Thrones” spinoff series — co-created by Ryan Condal and “Thrones” author George R.R. Martin — has proven to be a fire-breathing hit for the network. The show enjoyed the biggest premiere audience ever for an original series for both HBO and HBO Max (now Max), and the first season averaged 29 million viewers an episode over linear and streaming. It was renewed for Season 2 just one week following its series premiere.
Based on author Martin’s “Game of Thrones” book “Fire & Blood,” “House of the Dragon” follows the Targaryen dynasty in the fictional continent of Westeros. It takes place nearly 200 years before the events of “Game of Thrones” and about 100 years after the Targaryens united the Seven Kingdoms.

Ahead of Sunday’s Season 2 premiere, HBO has confirmed it has renewed House of the Dragon for a third season.
The news is not a surprise. House of the Dragon creator George R.R. Martin teased in December 2023 that he was already working with the writing team on Seasons 3 and 4 of the fantasy drama.
Based on Martin’s Fire & Blood and set 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones, House of the Dragon tells the story of House Targaryen.
“George, Ryan, and the rest of our incredible executive producers, cast, and crew, have reached new heights with the phenomenal second season of House of the Dragon,” said Francesca Orsi, Executive Vice President, HBO Programming, Head of HBO Drama Series and Films. “We are in awe of the dragon-sized effort the entire team has put into the creation of a spectacular season two, with a scope and scale that is only rivaled by its heart.

House of the Dragon is a couple of days away from finally coming back with its second season that this time will bring nothing but a relentless full-scale war between House of Targaryen’s family members.
Initially launched as a prequel to a fantasy drama series Game of Thrones also based on George R.R. Martin’s medieval age-coded universe, House of the Dragon takes its viewers several centuries back away from Daenerys Targaryen’s attempts to seize the Iron Throne. Though there’s no direct connection to Game of Thrones’ characters in there whatsoever, House of the Dragon’s actors don’t appear to be that interested in what the future was like for their on-screen family.
It may come as a jaw-dropping revelation for many fans, but some of the series’ leads in fact still didn’t watch a single episode from the original show or did watch the series,...

With House of the Dragon season 2 premiering this week, here are a couple of predictions on what fans want to see from the Game of Thrones prequel series!
Since House of the Dragon season 2 is based on George Rr Martin's Fire & Blood novel, book readers and show fans could easily predict what the return of the show will mean for the series in the long run.
For now, here are a couple of highlights that the second season ought to shed light on.
Rhaenyra's Son's Death Will Open the Floodgates to Civil War
Now that the Green Council has crowned Aegon II, the consequences of this decision may snowball in the second season, starting with Rhaenyra thinking twice about Viserys' final words before his death bed.

The Game of Thrones prequel series House of the Dragon is all set to have its second season premiere this week. While fans await the show, critics already have a head-start and have given the show amazing reviews. Many consider it a step up from its predecessor, with the Civil War between King Aegon and Rhaenyra becoming a reality.
One episode, in particular, has caught critics’ attention and made them brand it as the best of the season. The fourth episode of the second season titled ‘A Dance of the Dragons’ received great reviews with one critic comparing it to Game of Thrones’ ‘Battle of the Bastards’. However, fans seem to think that is an overstatement.

Matt Smith and Emma D’Arcy play the roles of Daemon Targaryen and Rhaenyra Targaryen in the Game of Thrones prequel series, House of the Dragon. While the two have great on-screen chemistry, the love and respect they have for one another in real life is what wins our hearts.

Recently, Matt Smith had social media going all “aww” with his sensible yet adorable act of defending Emma D’Arcy when an interviewer unknowingly misgendered them in front of the actor. The best part is, that Matt Smith was not rude or snobby about the interviewer using the wrong pronouns for his friend. Instead, he decided to take a more subtle route to correct her.

As a warrior queen once screamed, “Where are my dragons?”
It’s the question that’s lingered for Game of Thrones franchise fans for almost two years now, as the audience eagerly awaits for the second season of prequel series House of the Dragon to drop. Well, good news, friends: It’s almost here! June 16 is the big date, with the war between Team Black and Team Green finally kicking into overdrive, and plenty of those ferocious winged beasts fueling the fight along.
Of course, now comes the next question: “Great, so, uh, remind me what happened?”
The first season finale released in October 2022. Two years is a long time in TV land. Heck, two days is a long time in TV land, with whole seasons binge-dropping in their entirety left and right — let alone trying to identify the next water-cooler show. At the very least, Westeros is nothing if...

Emma D’Arcy as Rhaenyra Targaryen is one of the best castings in House of the Dragon, and Matt Smith as Daemon complements them perfectly. Matt Smith is also a great ally of D’Arcy in real life.

This action, praised by the LGBTQ+ community, underscores Smith’s support for the community and the importance of using respectful language.

Matt Smith is being praised online for gently course-correcting a red carpet interview in which a reporter misgendered his “House of the Dragon” co-star Emma D’Arcy. Smith and D’Arcy star on the “Game of Thrones” prequel series as Daemon and Rhaenyra Targaryen, respectively.
During an interview at the “House of the Dragon” Season 2 premiere in London, Smith chatted with reporter Sue Perkins on the red carpet about the climactic moment in the first season finale where Daemon informs Rhaenyra about the death of her son, Lucerys. Perkins, who hosts Sky’s fan show “House of the Dragon: War Room,” incorrectly used “she” pronouns when referring to D’Arcy. Perks said she spoke to D’Arcy earlier on the red carpet and “she gave you all the credit” for the scene.
“I can’t take the credit, [but] I have to say, aren’t they brilliant?” Smith answered, using D’Arcy’s preferred “they/them” pronouns.

Matt Smith is winning praise from the LGBTQ+ community over the way he subtly corrected a presenter who mistakenly misgendered his House of the Dragon co-star Emma D’Arcy.
Smith was interviewed by Sue Perkins, host of Sky’s official fan show House of the Dragon: War Room, at the London premiere of Season 2.
Perkins referenced an earlier interview she had done with D’Arcy and explained that “she gave you all the credit” for the final scene in Season 1, in which Rhaenyra Targaryen is informed by Daemon about the death of her son Lucerys.
D’Arcy’s preferred pronouns are they/them, which Smith repeated back to Perkins when he answered her question. “I can’t take the credit, [but] I have to say, aren’t they brilliant?” he said.

House of the Dragon S2 Will Explore Aemond's 'Shadow Side', Says Actor Ewan Mitchell - Main Image
Fans have seen Aemond Targaryen as a major villain in House of the Dragon after his dragon, Vhagar, kills Arrax and its master, Lucerys Velaryon, in the first season finale.
Despite this negative connotation given to Aemond, Ewan Mitchell teases his character will “surprise people” in the upcoming House of the Dragon Season 2.
Aemond House of the Dragon Season One
Aemond didn’t see the death of Lucerys and Arrax coming as he and his dragon, Vhagar, chased the two.
Aemond and Lucerys lost control of their dragons, with Arrax breathing fire on Vhagar against Lucerys’ protest.
But just when Lucerys thought they were safe after regaining control of Arrax and commanding him to fly over the storm clouds, an enraged Vhagar appeared, bit Arrax in pieces, and ate Lucerys whole.

House Targaryen — and all of Westeros — is on the brink of civil war as the Game of Thrones spinoff House of the Dragon returns for Season 2 on Sunday, June 16, at 9/8c on HBO and Max. In King’s Landing, Aegon II (Tom Glynn-Carney) has been crowned Lord of the Seven Kingdoms and Protector of the Realm. But across Blackwater Bay at Dragonstone, Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D’Arcy) is fighting for her place in the succession. How did Rhaenyra and her former Bff’s son become dueling heirs to the Iron Throne? You can blame Hightower meddling, Targaryen incest, and one big dragon bite for this mess. Here’s a recap of the first season’s 10 episodes. Season 1, Episode 1: “The Heirs of the Dragon” The series starts with Princess Rhaenys (Eve Best) getting passed over for the throne in favor of cousin Viserys I Targaryen (Paddy Considine). Max (formerly known as HBO Max) increasing its subscription price put pressure on subscribers’ wallets. But if you’re eagerly waiting for the House of the Dragon Season 2, the price increase may not seem like a setback after seeing its rating on the movie aggregator site, Rotten Tomatoes.
Critics are loving what House of the Dragon Season 2 has to offer
The Game of Thrones prequel series has managed an impressive score of 90% on Rotten Tomatoes. Although the rating is based on early reviews, it’s a strong enough indicator for the viewers to believe that the makers have done full justice to the hype.
Some of the top critics, including ones from CNN and The Independent, believe that the first few episodes of the series will test viewers’ patience, as it takes time to set the tone for a “grand, violent spectacle”. We’ll know whether viewers’ opinions align with...

Season 2 of House of the Dragon is just around the corner, and fans are surely excited to witness the continuation of the story that left everyone hanging at the end of the first installment. One big change that viewers will see in the upcoming series is the brand-new opening credits.

The hit HBO show will be switching from the blood stream in a cogwheel theme to an embroidery of a Bayeux Tapestry-style history of the Targaryen family. The threads are said to be jumping through the base fabric. While this new introduction sounds cool, many fans are still unimpressed with one major aspect: the usage of the same soundtrack.

House of the Dragon has become the latest piece in Game of Thrones’ masterful story. While many were concerned when the series was originally introduced, not only did it relieve these expectations, it exceeded them. The series follows House Targaryen in its prime, as it ruled over Westeros with an iron fist and throne.

Taking cinema screens by storm, the sci-fi action genre has become a staple cash cow for Hollywood. However, on the other end of the coin, filmmakers with a vision have managed to turn it from a cash cow into some of the most astounding pieces of art ever. The likes of Denis Villeneuve’s Blade Runner 2049, Christopher Nolan’s Tenet, and Steven Spielberg’s Ready Player One stand out as some of the most popular and acclaimed outings in recent times.

HBO's Game of Thrones prequel series, House of the Dragon, returns for its second season in ten days, and the review embargo has now lifted.
Though most critics got to see all 8 episodes, some only got the first 2, which should be taken into account when reading through these verdicts.
Though reviews are still coming in, House of the Dragon season 2 currently sits at a very impressive 92% on Rotten Tomatoes.
"Approaching its dynastic cataclysm with a deliberate stride rather than a charging gallop, House of the Dragon carefully sets up its emotional stakes to make the fiery spectacle all the more scorching," reads the Critics Consensus.
The cast - particularly Emma D'Arcy as Rhaenyra Targaryen - come in for universal praise, as does the production values, VFX and intense action sequences (it sounds like season 2 ups the gore quota considerably), but some seem to feel that the story has a few issues,...
