It’s been three short days since UK prime minister Rishi Sunak announced the country would be going to the polls on July 4th for a general election, and J.K. Rowling has made her presence felt on social media, slamming the opposition leader for his treatment of a gender-critical politician in his own party.
Rosie Duffield, the Labour politician for Kent in south-eastern England, was reportedly not invited to the election campaign launch event, although it took place in that region. Duffield took to X (formerly Twitter) to say:
“Well, day one has gone well then..! Strong women can’t be broken that easily, lads. And I have an army of them behind me, in front of me, beside me and holding me up.”
And Duffield found an ally in Rowling, who shares Duffield’s belief that women’s rights are being compromised by trans-supporting language, with the Harry Potter...

Gb News says it has taken legal action against Britain’s Office of Communications (Ofcom) after the regulator found one of the channel’s recent programs violated certain impartiality rules.
The nature of the legal move was not explicitly announced by Gb News, but it is believed to be an appeal of an unfavorable decision recently issued by Ofcom that found a February forum with British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak did not give equal weight to opposing viewpoints, as required under the country’s media regulations.
“Gb News has begun the formal legal process of challenging recent Ofcom decisions which go against journalists’ and broadcasters’ rights to make their own editorial judgements in line with the law and which also go against Ofcom’s own rules,” a spokesperson for the channel said on Friday. “Ofcom...

Good afternoon Insiders, Jesse Whittock back again to take you through the week’s news in the entertainment industry, as the Cannes Film Festival nears its close.
What More Cannes I Say?
Stand up for the standouts: After a quiet opening, the Cannes Film Festival received a shot of life as several buzzy titles finally hit the screen. The excitement on the ground began with The Substance, the much-anticipated blood-splattered horror thriller from French director Coralie Fargeat, which was met with a 13-minute ovation, the longest for a title at this year’s festival until Gilles Lellouche’s Beating Hearts (L’Amour Ouf) took that crown last night. Fargeat’s pic, which stars Demi Moore, Margaret Qualley and Dennis Quaid, is a punk rock fable centered around a new product called The Substance that promises to transform people into the best version of themselves. It’s an offer that comes with a twist.

The Media Bill looks set to become law in the UK, meaning landmark new rules for streaming services including Netflix and Disney.
The House of Lords passed the Media Bill on Thursday evening as lawmakers rushed to ensure the legislation can receive Royal Assent before Parliament is dissolved ahead of an election.
The Media Bill has been years in the making, but Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s decision to call a snap election on July 4 put the legislation in jeopardy at the eleventh hour.
The bosses of the BBC, ITV, Paramount-owned Channel 5, and Comcast-owned Sky all signed a statement today urging politicians to pass the Media Bill before a change of government.

Too many comedians are taking “the path of least resistance” and failing to address contentious political topics, according to the creator of The Thick of It and Veep.
Storied British comedy creator Armando Iannucci said he often hears comics utter phrases like “I have to be careful about what I say,” with his comments coming as both the UK and U.S. warm up for general elections in six weeks and six months respectively.
Speaking at the BBC Comedy Festival in Glasgow, Iannucci urged comedians to meet these challenges head on.
“Comedy is not belittling a subject but if it chooses to look at that subject it is offering a way into it that might offer a surprising or fresh perspective,” he added. “It is asking us to tell ourselves what we think about something, and how we might respond to that. The head honchos of all major British broadcasters have urged politicians to pass the Media Bill before a change of government.

The long-awaited Media Bill includes updates in areas such as streamer regulation, prominence and will give Channel 4 the opportunity to own the rights to its own shows for the first time in its history. It will bring the major streaming services under regulator Ofcom’s code in areas such as impartiality and age-appropriate content.

Farcical scenes in Britain, where Rishi Sunak’s speech announcing a July 4 election was drowned out by rain and a protester blasting D:Ream hit Things Can Only Get Better.
As the prime minister delivered his address to the nation, he was getting visibly drenched by a spring shower, while he had to fight to be heard over protests outside Downing Street.
A member of the public was playing Things Can Only Get Better, a famous Tony Blair campaign song and likely reference to the fact that there could be a change of government in the UK after 14 years of Conservative rule. Labour is around 20 points ahead in the polls.

The British prime minister and leader of the U.K. Conservative Party, Rishi Sunak, has officially called a general election in what is set to be a historical year for global politics.
Britons will take to the polls on Thursday, July 4 after ministers had been assured a summer election will not take place. But off the back of good economic news for Sunak’s government as they hit a tricky inflation target, senior politicians frantically changed schedules to capitalize on the welcomed development.
“I have never been prouder to be British,” Sunak began in his statement outside London’s Downing Street on Wednesday afternoon. “I recognize that it has not always been easy. Some of you will only just be feeling the benefits (of inflation coming down)… Now is the moment for Britain to choose its future. Earlier today, I spoke to His Majesty the King to request a dissolution of Parliament.

British voters will head to the polls on American Independence Day.
UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has just announced on the steps of his Downing Street home in the pouring rain that the date of the next general election will be July 4.
Rumors had been rife since this morning’s nationwide inflation statistics, which brought good news for the sitting Conservative government, that an election would be imminent, although commentators didn’t expect it to be so soon until the past hour or so. Most analysts had previously believed the election would take place later this year or in January 2025, which was the absolute latest it had to happen.
Sunak’s Conservatives have been trailing in the polls to the opposition Labour Party for months now and Labour will be favorites following a recent disastrous local election campaign for the Tories.

The UK Culture Secretary has said she lobbied the BBC during a private board meeting to refer to Hamas as “terrorists” in its news coverage.
Lucy Frazer, who has previously said publicly that the corporation should use the term when referring to the group, was put under pressure this morning at a Culture, Media & Sport Committee hearing by committee member John Nicolson over the meeting with BBC head honchos including the Director General that took place late last year.
Nicolson quoted people who attended the meeting and told him they had been “baffled” by Frazer’s insistence to eschew discussing issues like the licence fee settlement and instead continue to “repeat points about Gaza.” “I am told you kept coming back to it,” said Nicolson.
Frazer stressed that a range of points were discussed at the meeting including the license fee settlement but recalled urging the BBC to change its tack on Hamas.

Ofcom has begun the procedure to issue Gb News with a sanction following a “serious and repeated” breach of its code over a People’s Forum show in which Prime Minister Rishi Sunak took questions from a live audience.
Ofcom has today said Gb News once again failed to “preserve due impartiality,” a section of the regulator’s code that the right-leaning news network has repeatedly fallen foul of, with Sunak given a “mostly uncontested platform to promote the policies and performance of his government” in this instance.
In The People’s Forum, Sunak was questioned by a live audience about the government’s policies and performance, in the context of the forthcoming UK general election.
The show almost immediately drew criticism for being one-sided and attracted more than 500 complaints to Ofcom.

Prince Harry returned to London, England, this week to mark 10 years of the Invictus Games. Was he happy to be back home? Maybe, maybe not. The Duke of Sussex sidestepped the question hours before attending an anniversary service at St. Paul’s Cathedral. Ahead, how Harry replied and why a body language expert described his reaction as “darkly tickled.”
Harry answered the ‘happy to be home’ question with a chuckle and ‘nice to see you’
The Duke of Sussex landed in London on May 7, 2024, after celebrating his son Prince Archie’s birthday a day earlier in California. (Harry and Meghan Markle’s oldest child turned 5.)
Fast-forward to May 8, 2024, the day of the Invictus Games anniversary service. Just hours before it was set to begin at 5 p.m. local time, cameras spotted Harry leaving an event. As he waved to crowds outside, an awaiting cameraman asked: “Are you happy to be home?...

It seems there’s no way forward for Prince Harry and King Charles III. An expert says the father-son relationship is “terminally damaged,” after they didn’t meet during the Duke of Sussex’s trip to London, England, for the Invictus Games’ 10-year anniversary. Ahead, what would happen between Harry and his dad “in a sensible world.” Plus, how there’s been a complete role reversal.

King Charles III and Prince William have busy schedules as Prince Harry returns to London, England, for the Invictus Games’ 10-year anniversary. Just as the Duke of Sussex arrived in the U.K., it was announced the king had a “full” schedule. The same can reportedly be said for Harry’s brother, the Prince of Wales, and why he won’t be at St. Paul’s Cathedral for an anniversary service.

Prince Harry’s U.K. trip for the Invictus Games anniversary is here. He’s already touched down in London, England, ahead of a special service on May 8, 2024. There won’t be the Duke of Sussex’s wife, Meghan Markle, or any other British royals along to mark the occasion. This, an expert says, will be a “telling” reflection of what he’s “done.”

On May 8, 2024, Harry’s heading to St. Paul’s Cathedral, the same place where his parents, King Charles III and Princess Diana, married in 1981. There he’ll take part in a service of thanksgiving all about the Invictus Games.
While he’s already in London attending anniversary events, Harry won’t have any family on hand at the church service, which, per royal expert Jennie Bond, is “telling.

The PBS channel recently aired the British series Mr Bates vs The Post Office, based on a true story. Earlier this year, the project was released in its home country on the ITV channel, sparking a new wave of interest in the old but completely outrageous story.
A bug in Horizon's computer accounting system led to dozens of subpostmasters being accused of massive embezzlement. Taking on a huge civil service is difficult and frightening, but there is one small man with a big heart, Alan Bates, who is willing to take the risk.
To understand the essence of the story, it is first necessary to explain who subpostmasters are. They are the people who contract with the Post Office of Great Britain, get a franchise, and open a post office. In small towns, they are respected citizens who know all the locals – the real pillars of society.

Prince Harry’s going to London, England, but a visit with his father, King Charles III, may not happen. Why? Because the 75-year-old monarch may reportedly be too “busy” for a sit down. Ahead, what’s on the agenda for King Charles as his youngest son, the Duke of Sussex, prepares to mark 10 years of the Invictus Games.
Harry may not see ‘quite busy’ King Charles on his Invictus anniversary visit to London
Harry and the king will be in the same city at the same time come May. Harry’s traveling from his and Meghan Markle’s home in Montecito, California, to England.
There, he’ll take part in a service at London’s St. Paul’s Cathedral, marking 10 years of the Invictus Games, the sporting competition for wounded and injured soldiers he launched in 2014.
Harry’s expected to give a reading at the service, while actor Damian Lewis...

The former BBC journalist was abruptly removed from her Lbc weekend show on April 20 and was replaced by Ali Miraj, a former Conservative Party parliamentary candidate.
Myska being “disappeared” has stoked anger among Lbc’s 3M listeners, with more than 22,000 people signing a petition demanding she be reinstated in her 1-4Pm slot on Saturday and Sunday.
Her treatment has also surprised some colleagues, with supporters arguing that Lbc’s parent company Global had mishandled how her departure had been communicated. Global and Myska declined to comment.

U.K. media regulator Ofcom published “strengthened” industry guidance and issued a warning to broadcasters on Wednesday after recently finding that news network Gb News, which is often described as the British equivalent of the Fox News Channel, had breached regulations around politicians moonlighting as TV news presenters.
“Following a series of decisions about programs presented by politicians found in breach of Rules 5.1 and 5.3 of (the Ofcom Broadcasting Code) – a number of important learnings for broadcasters have been hardwired into strengthened industry guidance,” it said.
Rule 5.1 says that “news, in whatever form, must be reported with due accuracy and presented with due impartiality.” Rule 5.3 states: “5.3: No politician may be used as a newsreader, interviewer or reporter in any news programs unless, exceptionally, it is editorially justified. In that case, the political allegiance of that person must be made clear to the audience.”

My own documentary on the subject can be found on the BBC website. It is a grotesque distortion of race and should always be condemned.”
Previously: Speaking to The Guardian, Harewood, who also serves as president of prestigious British drama school the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, said: “We’re at this strange point in the profession where people go: ‘Oh, you can’t play that role because you’re not disabled, or you can’t play that because you’re not really from there.’ The name of the game is acting.”
He added, “Yes, we’ve got to be representative, but I do think we have to be careful.

J.K. Rowling is one of the world’s most renowned authors since she penned the Harry Potter series. Unfortunately, Rowling has long since left her magical world to take up arms against trans individuals, particularly trans women.
Violence against the trans community has been on the rise of late, mostly due to fear-mongering by prominent public figures. To combat such hate crimes, the Scottish government has come up with a law that would hold such people culpable. Rowling, unsurprisingly, is against it.

Five television programs aired by upstart channel Gb News were found to have violated Britain’s news impartiality rules, according to media regulators there.

Following a routine procedure for an enlarged prostate in January, tests concluded that King Charles III has cancer.
A statement released by the Palace on Feb. 5 read in part: “During the king’s recent hospital procedure for benign prostate enlargement, a separate issue of concern was noted. Subsequent diagnostic tests have identified a form of cancer. His Majesty has today commenced a schedule of regular treatments, during which time he has been advised by doctors to postpone public-facing duties.”

The U.K. government of Conservative Party leader Rishi Sunak unveiled a 40 percent corporate tax relief for film and TV studio facilities until 2034 on Wednesday, introduced a new independent film incentive of 40 percent and announced an increase to an existing incentive for visual effects. The moves earned praise from entertainment industry leaders who also said that the new Jurassic World movie would start shooting in the country later this year.
