When Tyra Banks decided to open her ice cream shop Smize in Santa Monica, she sought out an “aerated dessert consultant” to advise her. Luckily Dr. Maya Warren, an ice cream scientist, had just come off a stint advising Cold Stone Creamery’s international operations.
The “America’s Next Top Model” creator and entrepreneur had come up with the Smize concept, but Warren took on product development, refining flavors and helping create the signature Smize surprise that Banks asked for — a cookie-dough truffle at the bottom of each container. What exactly does an ice cream scientist do? “I can be an extension of her taste buds but on a technical level,” Warren explains.
“Tyra and I are both obsessed with frozen custard,” she says. Frozen custard is eggier and denser than ice cream, with at least 1.4% egg yolk and 14% dairy fat in the mixture. “We like a dense product; we’re both drawn to higher fat,...

After 29 seasons of CBS’s hit reality TV show “The Amazing Race,” only three all-female teams have prevailed: doctors Nat Strand & Kat Chang in Season 17, sisters Kisha Hoffman & Jen Hoffman in Season 18, and food scientists Amy DeJong & Maya Warren in Season 25. According to Gold Derby’s exclusive odds for the current 30th season, X-Games athletes Kristi Leskinen & Jen Hudak will be next to join this exclusive list. And it’s about time.
So far Kristi and Jen have arrived first at the mat in two prior legs, including the premiere episode. As of this writing the powerhouse duo has leading 21/20 to win heading into Wednesday’s two-hour episode, titled “The First Rule of Amazing Race Club.” The trailer for this week’s combined 9th and 10th episodes hints that one team will lose their passport. If true, this mistake could cost one of the remaining five teams their shot at the $1 million prize.

Man, I feel sorry for Phil Keoghan. All he wanted to do was help two nice people find love and CBS forced him to conduct an "Amazing Race" season around it and then nobody found love and he's stuck giving away a million bucks to two people who probably will never speak again. I kid. Phil Keoghan loves "The Amazing Race" and I have no doubt that given a choice between traveling around the world twice per year as "Race" host and hosting a dating show, he'd never host the dating show in a million years. But either he really, really, really wanted to validate the premise of this "Amazing Race" Blind-Dating season or some of the producers really, really, really wanted him to validate the premise of this "Amazing Race" Blind-Dating season. That mean that in Friday (May 15) night's "Amazing Race" finale, Phil was stuck saying things like, "Any...

Hey! Look at that! "The Amazing Race" is, indeed, capable of making at least minor corrections. Last season's penultimate episode was, if you'll recall, a bit of a logical mess. Brooke & Robbie, who I've mostly forgotten, finished first, but got nothing for their trouble, because it was a "Keep On Racing..." Leg. Amy & Maya finished last and not only were they not eliminated and not only did they not face a Speed-Bump in the next Leg because it was a "Keep On Racing..." Leg rather than a Non-Elimination Leg, but they went on to win, becoming one of the two or three least dominant "Amazing Race" winners ever. It was stupid. Because the last Leg always begins with travel back to the United States and is usually an Equalizer, Brooke & Robbie didn't win a prize as the winners of the Leg, didn't get a time advantage and basically did a Leg of activities for nothing,...

In the interest of time, I skipped out on the "Amazing Race" exit interview circuit, a decision I often regretted. I'd have loved to ask Lisa & Michelle about shoving and hypocrisy, or talk to Shelley & Nici about how their existing relationship hurt them out there or to discuss whether Kym & Alli felt annoyed at a surfing task being their demise. I was more than happy, though, to rejoin the circuit to talk to the "Amazing Race" finale, especially when the victors turned out to be Food Scientists Amy & Maya, a pair I grew to really root for during the Race. No, Maya & Amy weren't the strongest team. In fact, they made it to the end without winning any of the first 11 Legs and only a "Keep on Racing..." Leg in Manila kept them around. But even if they seemed physically unlikely -- especially with a prior injury forcing Amy to...

Brooke and Robbie's dominance on The Amazing Race was brief and their downfall, steep. After winning the penultimate leg, only to learn that they had to continue straight into the first four-team finale, the wrestlers were eliminated in fourth place midway through the final leg. Adding insult to injury: They were cut right before doing a Roadblock, and their frenemies Amy and Maya won. "It was pretty hard to watch. We didn't expect it to play out that way," Brooke tells TVGuide.com. "We made it way farther than we could've ever imagined. We're very proud of ourselves. I think we played the game the way we wanted to." Yes, that means reneging on U-Turn deals. See why they did that and if they really had it out for Amy and Maya.

When EW caught up with the 25th winners of The Amazing Race, they were hoarse from celebrating all weekend with their "race family," but still flying high from the $1 million win. Amy and Maya—Candy Scientists, by trade—beat out three much more physically imposing teams, two-thirds of whom were professional athletes (one-third of whom were potentially teeth-cleaning super humans), to become only the third all-female first-place finishers in Tar history. Amy and Maya ran an impressively academic Race, but more importantly to them, they played the game well while "staying true to themselves." That often becomes a meaningless phrase,...

There are several things that have to be discussed in this recap of Friday (December 19) night's "Amazing Race" finale, but I want to get this out of the way: I don't think Brooke was wrong to be pissed off to see The Candy Girls arrive at the Manila airport after the last Leg and I don't think Adam was wrong to say that he was frustrated. When I talked to Phil Keoghan about the rash of episodes in which teams didn't go home this season -- Four out of 11 episodes -- he said that people were universally excited by the ending of the last Leg, because it was something they had never seen before. True. What they hadn't seen before was a team get spared from elimination at the end of what was, for all intents and purposes, a Leg despite finishing last, only to be immediately rewarded with an Equalizer at the airport,...

Tonight's finale episode, kicked off with the teams, learning that it was time to catch a flight to good ole Los Angeles,CA to get the first clue for this leg of the race. Once they got there, they had to hop in a Ford Explorer Sport and retrieve a manila envelope. Then take it to the Film L.A. clerk's office to get their next clue, which was a film permit. Once they got it, they had to head on over to the Southwest Marine Warehouse and give them the film permit so they could participate in the Road Block challenge. In the challenge, they had to successfully film a live action stunt to get their next clue. After finishing that up, the teams were directed to hit up a boating area to do a search and rescue training exercise challenge with the Coast Guard in order to get their next clue.

"The Amazing Race" concludes its 25th installment on Friday (December 19) night with its first four-team finale, pitting Wrestlers Brooke & Robbie, Food Scientists Amy & Maya, Dentists Jim & Misti and Surfers Bethany & Adam. The field is extra packed because in last week's episode, Amy & Maya reached the Pit Stop in last, only to be told that it was a "Keep on racing..." Leg, which isn't the same as a Non-Elimination Leg, because we already had three of those this season, making four out of 11 weeks in which the "Amazing Race" episode ended without a team heading home. Earlier this week, I got on the phone to chat with "Amazing Race" host Phil Keoghan about the season so far and the upcoming finale. As usual, Phil and I don't always agree on everything. He, for example, insists audiences loved last year's Las Vegas finale. I'm reasonably sure that was not universal the universal opinion.

The Amazing Race is about to conclude its 25th season and, for the first time ever, the final leg will feature four teams competing for the $1 million grand prize. This Friday will be the winter finale for the popular CBS reality show The Amazing Race. It is hard to believe that 25 cycles of this show have been produced since 2001. The 25th edition has given the 11 teams a few different experiences than they were accustomed to in the previous seasons. The winners of the first leg were awarded a Save prize, which would protect them from elimination if they were the last team to arrive at the pit stop. Another new twist this season is that four teams will be traveling back to America with a chance of winning $1 million. The four teams still left competing are: The Wrestlers Brooke and Robbie, The Surfers Adam and Bethany, The Sweet Scientists Amy and Maya, and The Dentists Jim and Misti. A note on "Amazing Race" travel: If there are two flights to a location getting in an hour or two apart in the mid-morning or early afternoon, it's probably acceptable to worry if you're on the later flight. Those people ahead of you have a solid advantage and if they don't screw up, your chances of moving ahead of them are remote, though probably not nil. If, however, there are two flights to a location getting in an hour or two apart late at night, chances are reasonably good that you won't need to sweat it. Yes, there's always the chance, especially if the destination city is considered a night-life hot-spot, that your next task could be at a bar or club -- i.e. Sri Lanka last season -- but precedent suggests you're more likely to follow your clue to a sign telling you to have an unpleasant night's...

Can we just skip to next week and the triumphant return of the "My Ox Is Broken" task? I kinda wish that "Amazing Race" recycled the most difficult of challenges more frequently. Like the hay bale challenge from Season 6 and Season 15? That one could totally be done every five seasons. And if next week's ox return is triumphant, aren't we going to be annoyed that the show waited 20 full seasons before giving somebody else the chance to try to top Colin's Season 5 meltdown? I sure will be. Fine. Let's not get ahead of ourselves. Friday (November 28) night's "Amazing Race" was probably the most purely entertaining Leg of the season. Happy 300th Leg to "The Amazing Race." No, that doesn't mean this was the 300th episode of "The Amazing Race." By my count, it was only 296, but... Oh, I'm not going to bother trying to figure it out. "The Amazing Race" celebrated this semi-arbitrary milestone in predictable fashion with a Leg that featured a fantastic Roadblock, an interestingly misgauged Detour, some beautiful Sicilian scenery, an opening 20 minutes of filler and... Yup. A Non-Elimination Leg. "Amazing Race" doesn't like to send people home after Legs characterized by altruism and nobody likes to mix a milestone with an elimination. And, as always, you could get a strong sense that an Nel was coming due to the half-hearted editing of the climax and a really, really lame opening 20 minutes. The first segment of tonight's episode was essentially the Bikers making fun of the Dentists, who started with a lead of over 100 minutes. That...

Embargos and NDAs aside, in four or five months, I'll be able to let readers know why it was so amusing to me that "The Amazing Race" spent a second consecutive Leg traveling through Morocco on Friday (October 31) night.
