American Idol’s top 10 finalists, who will all be invited to join the annual tour, were asked to perform Billboard hits on Wednesday night’s show. All in all, judges Harry Connick Jr., Jennifer Lopez and Keith Urban seemed pleased with the singers' performances, with harsh criticism for just a few of the Idol hopefuls.
American Idol Recap
Mk Nobilette was the first singer to hit the stage on Wednesday night, taking on “Perfect” by P!nk. Starting out facing a mirror, Nobilette powered through the beginning of the song. After slipping on the track more than halfway through, the California native struggled to get back into the song and overcome the brief lapse. Lopez said she needed to be more resilent, while Connick shared his doubts about her as a live performer.

American Idol returned on Wednesday with “Movie Night,” where the contestants performed songs made famous by a film. Judges Harry Connick Jr., Jennifer Lopez and Keith Urban appeared more satisfied on Wednesday than they’ve been in past weeks as they heard the Top 11 singers perform.
American Idol Recap
First up was Sam Woolf, who sang The Beatles’ "Come Together," which appeared on the Across the Universe movie soundtrack. Though Woolf left his guitar behind in order to achieve a more dynamic performance, the judges still felt that the Florida teen could break out of his shell a bit more to better engage the audience.
Jess Meuse took on "Sounds of Silence" from The Graduate. With her guitar strapped on, Meuse gave an earnest performance that showcased her gritty voclas. Unfortuantely for the singer, the band botched the song somewhere in the middle, making for a bumpy patch in the number.

It's always a risky move to perform one of the judges' songs in front of them on American Idol, and for Emily Piriz the decision may have backfired.
Last Thursday, Piriz became the second contestant voted off of Season 13, after performingJennifer Lopez' "Let's Get Loud" 24 hours earlier.
But the 18-year-old from Miami says she doesn't regret her decision.

Last Thursday night, Emily Piriz became the second contestant from the Top 13 to be eliminated this season on American Idol. Many assumed she'd be in the Bottom 3, if not eliminated altogether. But there's no denying she has talent, as we saw with her final solo performance during Hollywood Week and her cover of Pink's "Glitter in the Air."
Emily talked with reporters, including BuddyTV, about her experience on Idol. She brought up her thoughts on the judges, if Hollywood Week is as grueling as it seems on TV and bonding with the other contestants. Also, how many other singing/talent competition shows did she try out for before Idol? Read on to find out.

America did not get loud for Emily Piriz.
The 18-year-old Florida native was the second finalist sent home by America’s vote on American Idol. Piriz sang “Let’s Get Loud” by judge Jennifer Lopez on Wednesday night’s “Home” themed show. Though Lopez liked the performance, Piriz still got the boot. For the second week in a row, the bottom three was a girl’s club with Mk Nobilette and Jena Irene joining Piriz in “the most hated stools in television,” as host Ryan Seacrest noted. EW talked to Emily Piriz right after the elimination to see how she feels.

American Idol narrowed it down to the Top 11 on Thursday night, when it was announced that the viewing public had decided to send 18-year-old Emily Piriz home.
American Idol Recap
At the start of the episode, the judges – more specifically, Harry Connick Jr. – were put under the microscope for possibly judging too harshly on Wednesday night. Randy Jackson, looking a bit bitter from his mentoring spot, made a joke about Connick suffering from some indigestion. Throwing some bile back Jackson’s way, Connick stated, “ I was not hired as a mentor; I was hired as a judge.”
In a lighter bit of ribbing, Connick received a message from the quarterback of his favorite football team – Drew Brees of the New Orleans Saints. After the teasing from Brees, Connick laughed with some humility before turning to the contestants to use Brees' job as an athelete to explain their relationship.

Even if the "American Idol" thing didn't work out, Emily Piriz had a backup plan: college. But even though she was eliminated in 12th place on the show's 13th season, she still plans to give music a go. In fact, she and fellow finalist Jena Irene are planning to move out to Los Angeles together this summer -- once they both graduate from high school.
"I'm a senior," Piriz tells Zap2it and a small group of reporters backstage after the Top 12 elimination show. "I'm just gonna go back home ... go back to school and graduate. Me and Jena were actually talking that we want to move out to [Hollywood] together this summer."
The original plan was to go to the University of North Florida and room with her high school friend, so having the whole "Idol" experience is like living in another reality. "It's weird going through that whole college search,...

"Harsh Harry" has been out in full force, but it was the fans who made the important decision of who was going home on American Idol Thursday. "I just want them to get better," Harry Connick Jr. said to fellow judges Jennifer Lopez and Keith Urban after a particularly negative critique on Wednesday night's performance show that left at least one contestant in tears. While no contestants received universal praise from the judges Wednesday, Urban had guaranteed finalists Sam Woolf and Emily Piriz that they would be safe despite the tough criticism. But who did America deem worthy of another week in the competition?...

Another week into "American Idol" Season 13, another all-female Bottom 3. After a middling week of performances, Mk Nobilette, Jena Irene and Emily Piriz all found themselves on the dreaded stools awaiting the final results. But who went home?
Ultimately, it was Emily who found herself singing for her life. But since it was so early in the competition, the judges declined to use their save. Here's how the whole thing went down:
The energy in the "American Idol" studio Wednesday night was off, but apparently the awkward feeling stuck around for another day because the strange video of the Top 12 singing "Home" half-shot on cell phone -- with Jena saying a very appropriate "this is so awkward" in the middle -- segued into an even weirder singalong in the audience with some more of Wednesday's off-beat clapping. (Please, audience, we beg: Stop Clapping during slow songs.)

Wednesday (March 5) night was a bad night for "American Idol." It wasn't just the imbecilic studio audience sabotaging one performance after another with against-the-beat clapping. And it wasn't just the performances themselves, which were generally poor, but not exclusively poor. A big part of the problem was that the judges also seemed disappointed and uncomfortable with the tone being set. Harry Connick Jr., in particular, came across as more consistently dyspeptic than Simon Cowell ever did on his grouchiest of days. I've never seen a reality judge making so little effort to cover up the sense that he'd rather be some place else. The big impact is that just about anybody could go home on Thursday. I'm assuming teenage girls will keep Sam Woolf safe, so he's the picture with this recap, but I had a hard time picking. I'd also have a hard time guessing which potentially eliminated contestants might get the Judges' Save.

It was all American Idol (2.7/8) as usual last night on Fox with things up a bit from last week. The 2-hour live show saw this season’s Top 12 belting out tunes, including Emily Piriz taking on Jennifer Lopez’s “Let’s Get Loud” right in front of the judge herself. It also saw Idol bopping up 4% from last week’s demo rating and steady in total viewers with 10.5 million, in line with the 10.6 million total from the show’s February 26 episode. Fox won the night among the key demo and among total viewers. CBS’ Criminal Minds was tops for the night in total viewers with 11.37 million and second in the key demo with a 2.6/7, an 18% rise over last week. Criminal Minds did beat Idol again in viewers head-to-head, as the Fox show pulled in 10.58 million during their common hour. The demo result was also the closest the CBS show has ever gotten to Idol.

American Idol's theme this week was "Home," encouraging all of the singers to pick a song that represents where they come from. Again, many of the singers struggled to break out of their nervousness and to find their unique voice in the competition. A few, however, managed to shine on the Idol stage and win praise from judges Harry Connick Jr., Jennifer Lopez and Keith Urban.
Jena Irene, a Michigan native, sang KT Tunstall’s “Suddenly I See.” Irene left her piano behind this week and appeared to want to show a more energetic side of herself. Connick, Urban and Lopez all enjoyed the tone of her voice, but had differing opinions on the quality of her overall performance.

The "American Idol" theme for the Top 12 is "Home." They should have to sing songs with their home state or city in the title -- "Sweet Home Alabama" would get a lot of play.
1. Jena Irene, "Suddenly I See," KT Tunstall
Nice choice for her tone of voice and the peppiness is fun, though the background is giving us a seizure. Also, we're disappointed that on "you can see she's a beautiful girl, she's a beautiful girl" that Jena didn't do the little minor run down on the second "girl." But it was a good start. No real missteps, but also not something that blew the roof off. A little blah. She could've done more with it, which is then exactly what Harry Connick Jr. says. For sure.
2. Alex Preston, "I Don't Wanna Be," Gavin DeGraw

Last Thursday's "American Idol" results weren't entirely shocking. I'd predicted that Kristen O'Connor would be eliminated and, for several reasons, she was. However, it was a minor surprise to see all of the Bottom Three slots go to women, which suggests either a shift in talent from last season, or a shift in voting patterns. It's too early, though, to know if we should start worrying about all of the girls, or just the weaker ones. Wednesday's theme is "Home," which should be roughly interchangeable from last week's theme, which involved songs that made a personal statement. After all, if your personal statement didn't say anything about where you come from, how personal could it have been? We'll see how things go after the break! 8 p.m. Et. Preparation montage! You know, I was a big Candice Glover fan last year. I was rooting for her almost from the beginning and I was pleased when she won. But when Ryan Seacrest mentioned during Wednesday's show that Candice Glover would be performing tonight, it took me way longer than it should have to remember who Candice Glover was. "American Idol" would also like you to forget that Nikki Minaj and Mariah Carey were ever judges. Things were pretty tight after Wednesday's performances. I think Malaya Watson made the biggest mess of her song, but I don't think she's going home. I'm assuming that Ben Briley, one of my four favorites last night, is safe, so he's the guy in my picture. Breathe in, y’all. This is the real American Idol with its 70-second performances and glib-ass judge comments. (I’m already starting to grit my teeth whenever Harry brings up “intonation” in a condescending way.) The theme of this live episode’s performances was, essentially, “Be yourself!” So as you can imagine, there were tons of disasters. Being yourself + being interesting = apparently difficult. Let’s rank ‘em.
13. Kristen O’Connor, Kelly Clarkson’s “Beautiful Disaster”
Here’s my impression of Kristen O’Connor and her brilliant Moneyball-style strategizing: “I need to prove my worth since I’m a wild card. My strategy is to choose Kelly Clarkson‘s most forgettable song. See you in the finals!” Billy Beane in the hooooouse. Weirder yet, she somehow intended the song — which is very much addressed from a woman to a man — to be about herself? She’s the beautiful disaster? Or this competition is?...

The "American Idol" Top 13 likes each other. Like, a lot. Zap2it talked with the finalists backstage after their first performance show, and every single one of them at some point or another mentioned how much they love each other and love listening to each other sing.

American Idol presented the top 13 singers on Wednesday with the theme of “This is Me.” Although the performances in front of the live audience still proved a little rough, a few of the Idol hopefuls looked poised to make it into the Top 10.
First up on Wednesday was country crooner Dexter Roberts, who picked Chris Young’s “Aw Naw” to sing. Though Roberts gave a confident, solid performance, the judges wanted more from him. If he wants to last in the competition, he’s going to have to put his own spin on the songs he chooses and loosen up a bit on stage.

The exciting shows are finally here, "American Idol" fans. It's the Top 13 finalists, with a theme of "This Is Me." Could you vague that up for us, "Idol"? That is akin to my all-time favorite theme, the Season 6 episode that was like "Songs Gwen Stefani Has Heard Of (Maybe)."
Just as an Fyi, we're not going to recap all the video package shenanigans. Let's get down to business with the performances.
1. Dexter Roberts, "Aw Naw," Chris Young
Terrible song choice. This is a song trying to so hard to be a dirt-kickin' country rock number, but Dexter does not have the swagger to pull that off yet. He's just standing there. His voice isn't bad, but there are a few bum notes and the entire performance lacks energy. He'll stick around, I'm fairly sure, but he's going to have to step that up.
If this is what defines who he is,...

His voice isn't bad, but there are a few bum notes and the entire performance lacks energy. He'll stick around, I'm fairly sure, but he's going to have to step that up.
If this is what defines who he is,...

And here we go! American Idol has officially entered the final round of competition! Season 13's Top 13 all performed a song that fit the "This Is Me" theme, hoping to impress judges Jennifer Lopez, Keith Urban and Harry Connick Jr. While some definitely impressed and even surprised us, others, including a fan favorite, definitely fell short of the high bar the Fox reality hit has set this year. Ben Briley, Caleb Johnson, Jessica Meuse, Mk Nobilette, Emily Piriz, Alex Preston, Dexter Roberts, Majesty Rose, Malaya Watson, Sam Woolf, Kristen O'Connor, Cj Harris and Jena Irene all took the stage on Wednesday night to belt it out for America's votes, and we're running down the best performances of...

If you've checked out my earlier post, you've already seen my interviews with the six guys in the "American Idol" Top 13. After the judges gave two of their Wild Card slots to women, though, the girls took a 7-to-6 advantage going into the Top 13, meaning that that all-female alliance should be able to Pagong the men. Wait. Wrong Wednesday reality show. Sorry. Anyway, last Thursday, I caught up with all of the Season 13 "Idol" finalists. Click through for interviews with the seven remaining women. Above, you'll see my interview with M.K. Nobilette, who discusses her rave reviews from the judges last week, as well as her frank discussion of her sexuality and her love of backwards baseball caps. Then, below, you've got Jessica Meuse, who talks about the way she was depicted in the "Idol" Hollywood Week episodes and what the Group Night experience taught her about pressure. video...

This week of nervous performances and shy interviews has been sort of fun, but now, following the announcement of the Top 13, comes the real American Idol: months of live performances where assured talents shine while singing some of the most dated song choices ever. Will we get another Leiber and Stoller week? I must know!
Let’s rank this year’s competitors from worst to first, shall we? But before we get to that: Did anyone notice that Emmanuel Zidor did not even flinch or reach out in congratulations when Spencer Lloyd was announced as a potential wild card pick for the Top 13? It was Shady and I #gotmylife from it. Made me wonder if Lloyd, the much-touted “worship leader,” is a bit of a homophobe. Zidor did not look like he wanted to look at that guy. Any other theories out there? Emmanuel, if you’re out there,...

After a video recap of the last two nights of "American Idol," the show actually gets to some results fairly quickly.
Ryan Seacrest informs us that the ones who got through to the finals based on America's votes are Malaya Watson, Ben Briley, Emily Piriz, Alex Preston, Jessica Meuse, Dexter Roberts, Caleb Johnson, Majesty Rose, Mk Nobilette and Sam Woolf.

With the guys, the only one we missed was we thought Spencer Lloyd was a shoo-in in replace for Dexter Roberts, but we wanted Dexter to be a wild card pick, so it's cool that he got through on his own.
For the girls, Majesty Rose was the only one we missed. We thought Kristen O'Connor or Jena Irene might sneak in there.
The judges reveal that five of the 10 singers left will sing for the wild card spots:

When it comes to Thursday (February 20) night's "American Idol" results, I'm not confident on much. I know who I thought gave the best performances between the Top 15 Girls on Tuesday and the Top 15 Boys on Wednesday, but I don't know how America will respond. I'm using a picture of Mk Nobilette with my recap because I'm sure that even if America didn't love her, the judges will use a Wild Card for her. Beyond that? Well, let's see who makes the season's Top 13. Then I'm gonna go out and interview them. 7:58 p.m. Et. I don't know what format this episode will take, so I'll be playing it by ear. Hopefully things won't get sloppy. 8:00 p.m. We're starting my listing all 20 of the remaining contenders. That's a lot. And then? On to a recap of last night's performances from the guys. They weren't all great, but they...

Did you like Sam as much as we did? Watch his performance, then drop a comment with Your top ‘Idol’ pick from Rush Week!
This season’s top 15 guys went head to head (voice to voice?) on the Feb. 19 episode of American Idol, and while there were quite a few stand-out performers, one contestant stood head and shoulders above the rest: Sarasota, Fla., resident Sam Woolf! Excuse me while I totally fan-girl over him.
Not only was Sam’s version of David Gray‘s “Babylon” a breezy romp of plucky perfection, but the charming brunette had the entire audience eating out of the palm of his hand. I hate to be ‘that guy,’ but Sam totally fits the mold of past winners like Phillip Phillips and David Cook – and by that, I mean he’s a handsome white guy with a guitar. We get it, Harry — you don’t like when young singers take on mature songs. But when Emily Piriz totally nailed Grace Potter and the Nocturnal’s ‘Ooh La La,’ it was so inappropriate to call her out and embarrass her.
When Emily Piriz, 18, took the stage for Rush Week on American Idol, she completely rocked her version of “Ooh La La,” which yes, is a very sexual song. While this wasn’t the first time judge Harry Connick Jr. disproved of a contestant singing this song, calling her out the way he did was rude and uncalled for.
Harry Connick Jr. Embarrassed Emily Piriz
To give you a little background, the singer took the stage and did freakin’ amazing, but apparently that didn’t matter to Harry who just asked her to read the words of the first two lines of the song.

If you’ve paid attention to my urgent, poetic recaps of American Idol, you know we’ve arrived at my favorite time of year: the live(-ish) semifinal where a couple dozen singers with edgy haircuts and/or edgy midriff-baring tops (or both, if you’re edgy-edgy Marrialle Sellars) beg you to dial things on their behalf. It’s the esteemed Top 30 round — or as I’ve long called it, The “How Can This Be The Best Of The Best When Everybody Was Forgettable, Nervous, and Named Something Stupid?” Round. My favorite.
But I didn’t count such a stupid gimmick creeping its way into the festivities. Though 15 women qualified to perform on Tuesday’s show, only 10 would be allowed on air thanks to a mysterious prescreening round where Harry Connick Jr, Jennifer Lopez, and Paul McCartney Disguised As Sheryl Crow In The “Soak Up the Sun” Video (a.k.

There were new twists, familiar faces and loads of drama on American Idol Tuesday night, as the ladies kicked off the first of the live performance shows.

The familiar faces? Randy Jackson, the "Dogfather" of Idol, was back to mentor the contestants, leading a sort of Rush Week "wisdom workshop" for the pledges, which included vocal coaching from former Idol contestants Adam Lambert and Chris Daughtry,...

American Idol kicked off the live episodes on Tuesday night, where the judges selected 10 of the top 15 girls to sing for America’s votes in its first ever Rush Week.
The 15 girls that were selected at the end of Hollywood week received the mentorship of Randy Jackson, Adam Lambert, Chris Daughtry and Rickey Minor. They also received style makeovers and even some spiritual advising. Unfortunately, five of the polished singers would not get the chance to sing before the live audience. Keith Urban, Jennifer Lopez and Harry Connick Jr. had narrowed down the field to the 10 who outshone the others during dress rehearsals and throughout the workshop process.
Majesty Rose was the first name call by the trio of judges. She came out with her guitar to sing Pharrell’s hit song “Happy.” Many of the performances that followed didn’t match up to Rose’s stage presence or the pure strength of her voice.

"American Idol" Season 13 is finally starting the live shows with the Top 15 girls Tuesday (Feb. 18), though only 10 of them will get to perform, which doesn't seem very fair (and as it will turn out, is not fair because so many of them completely tank). They've been working hard in boot camp all week and now only some of them get to perform? Mean.
Before things kick off, Harry Connick Jr. says this is the most talented group since the first year. That's ... not a good comparison. Kelly Clarkson is awesome, but let's not get carried away that Season 1 is the pinnacle of talent for this show, Hcj.
Just as a reminder, the viewers will vote five men and five women into the Top 13 and the judges will pick the three wild card spots. Let's get to the performances:
