Lex Ortega's newest film a home invasion flick called Animales humanos (Human Animals) had its world premiere at the home town Morbido Film Festival in December. A married couple and their young daughter are terrified of the neighbors' dog, which ends up biting the girl. The dog is sacrificed to the desolation of its owners who saw it as their son. They enter the married couple's house at night to take revenge. What they want is justice: sacrifice the girl. The producers in Mexico are wasting no time and are pushing to get Animales humanos into Mexican cinemas as soon as possible. The official trailer was released the other day; alas, there were no subtítulos en inglés. So I began bugging Lex to get us a...

To say that watching Lex Ortega's brutal horror flick Atroz was a memorable experience is a tad bit of an understatement. There are still things from his film that I cannot 'un-see' in the short three months since I saw it at Morbido. I suspect that they will stick with me for a while longer. I caught wind that a new poster was released recently so I asked Lex to hook a hermano up so we could share it with you. So here it is, one gruesome layer after another. There is a larger version below that you can click on. Icky. ...

I have already said on a handful of occasions that Mexican filmmaker Lex Ortega gave me fair warning that his film Atroz was not going to be a walk in the park. I did not bring the vomit bags from the airplane like he suggested. In the end I did not end up needing one but Atroz is one of the most brutal horror films I have ever seen. There are things that happen in Atroz that I cannot unsee. The film opens with a shocking statement that an extremely high percentage of the hundreds of thousands of murders that happen in Mexico City (just Mexico City? There was some issues with the subtitles throughout) go unsolved. It is more of a set up as to...

Mexico Barbaro
Directed by Isaac Ezban, Laurette Flores Bornn, Jorge Michel Grau, Ulises Guzman, Edgar Nito, Lex Ortega, Gigi Saul Guerrero, Aaron Soto
Mexico, 2014
There’s a line in Mexico Barbaro that goes something like, “Drain the blood from your sister’s vagina or I’ll suck your soul out of your anus.” And that’s not the most outrageous thing that happens in this horror anthology that pulls from Mexican folklore, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and From Dusk Till Dawn, among others.
Mexico Barbaro is proudly off the wall, and it boasts horror tales that range from the modern (Tzompantli) to the Hitchcockian (Lo que importa es lo de adentro), to the Troma-like (La cosa mas preciada). That’s an advantage: the entirety of Mexico Barbaro is likely not for anyone, but there’s bound to be at least one entry in here that plays to any horror fan’s tastes.

If I turn up dead, or drunk, in Mexico when I am down to cover the Morbido Film Festival in a couple weeks I want Atroz/Atrocious director Lex Ortega to be brought in for questioning first. Lex's debut feature film is about to roll out throughout Latin America like a goddamned blood-soaked steamroller and I do not think we are prepared for it. Not one bit. Ahead of its November 3rd DVD and digital release from Dark Sky Films, the horror anthology México Barbaro is teased in a new trailer.
"Eight Mexican directors have united to create a film anthology featuring the most brutally terrifying Mexican traditions and legends, brought to vividly shocking life. MÉXICO Barbaro presents haunting stories that have been woven into the fabric of a nation’s culture, some passed down through the centuries and some new, but all equally frightening. Stories of boogeymen, trolls, ghosts, monsters, Aztec sacrifices, and - of course - the Day of the Dead all come together to create a film that is as original as it is familiar... and as important as it is horrifying.
The directors represented in this anthology film are Jorge Michel Grau (We Are What We Are, The ABCs of Death), Isaac Ezban (upcoming Fantastic Fest award winner The Incident), Laurette Flores, Ulises Guzmán,...

It was back in early November 2014 when we first reported on Lex Ortega's feature length debut Atrocious (aka Atroz). At the time, Ortega and his producer Abigail Bonilla had just launched a crowdfunding campaign, looking to finish the film as they had already 35 minutes of footage. While the contributions came on slowly, the campaign was eventually a complete success as they got more money of what they originally wanted. Then, the production of the film began on February 20 and wrapped exactly one week ago, on March 2. Ortega is well known within the genre circuit for his violent shorts and his recent segment in the horror anthology México Bárbaro, a project that was his idea. Atrocious will be - according to the...

Young Mexican horror filmmaker Lex Ortega has made a name for himself within the festival circuit, with several gory short films such as T is for Tamales and Mother's Blessing. He's also a recognized sound designer, and has worked for several international productions, like Frankenstein's Army and Late Phases. When I asked Cineteca Nacional's José Luis Ortega about Lex and the current genre cinema scene in Mexico (back in December 2013), he said, "I think he's, if not the only one, at least the top of the iceberg of a bunch of people who are recording their gore, brutal, gothic or very atmospheric movies. Lex is the only one who dares to sell his products and show them at festivals. He has a really good craft...

Macabro 2014 hosted a very special public conference with seven of the eight directors that are part of the upcoming horror anthology México Bárbaro. We published an article and an extensive interview with six of the directors already, so let's stay focused on the brand new stuff. We got to see the first México Bárbaro teaser trailer during the conference. It didn't show much but the images are quite promising. It also introduced a metal song, with the singer repeating the film's title. The trailer is not yet available online for your enjoyment, but...

It was conceived by Lex Ortega (sound designer for Frankenstein's Army) and will be offering segments by such directors as Somos Lo Que Hay's Jorge Michel Grau, Alucardos, Retrato de un Vampiro's Ulises Guzmán, and The Incident's Isaac Ezban. Mexican cinema has been a very important part of each Masacre en Xoco edition and 2013 is no exception: curators Mauricio Matamoros and José Luis Ortega have ready two films by Juan López Moctezuma, a homage to Rafael Corkidi and a couple of Lex Ortega short films (Contra Natura and Mother's Blessing). Talking with Matamoros, Ortega and Jorge Grajales (who joined the interview to my pleasant surprise) was a great opportunity to discuss Mexican horror cinema beyond the movies that have been part of Masacre en Xoco. In the second part of this interview, these cinema experts discuss the current Mexican genre scene, evoke past times and eventually name which are the essential Mexican horror movies of all time.
