Sometimes summer nights call out for a deep dive into nostalgic cinematographic homages. “Manila”, a 2009 movie directed by Adolf Alix Jr. and Raya Martin, might be just the perfect choice, accompanying us with an ode to Filipino cinema. The film was screened as part of unique, out-of-competition screenings at the 31st Moscow International Film Festival and the 62nd Cannes Film Festival.
By independent directors Raya Martin and Adolfo Alix Jr., the movie pays their homage to masterpieces of Filipino neorealism “City After Dark“, also known as “Manila by Night” (1980) by Ishmael Bernal and “Jaguar” (1979) by Lino Brocka. The project perfectly succeeds in its goal to open the door for a new audience to learn about the wonderful works of the old masters.
The social environment that Manila provided for those topics hasn't changed all that much in the last three decades, after all. A disconnected, dialogue-free montage separates the two short films,...

We have a lot of relationship drama on this week’s Grey’s Anatomy, most of which feels arbitrary and avoidable, but at least we have a couple of hookups to mitigate all the misery in Season 19, Episode 9, a.k.a. March 9’s “Love Don’t Cost a Thing.” [Warning: The below contains major spoilers for the Grey’s Anatomy Season 19, Episode 9, “Love Don’t Cost a Thing.”] The episode picks up with the interns preparing for a house party at Mer’s old house, but Griffith (Alexis Floyd) isn’t exactly focusing on hosting duties: She’s too busy trying to sort out her feelings about her ex Trey (William Martinez) showing up in Seattle and trying to reunite with her. Turns out, they were engaged, and they had a “whole life” together, as she later tells Adams. Now Trey wants her back. “Grey’s Anatomy,” which in last week’s episode said goodbye-ish to Ellen Pompeo as Meredith Grey, will say hello to the actor William Martinez in the March 2 episode this week. In a recurring role, Martinez will make his debut as Trey, a character who’s an important figure from Simone’s (Alexis Floyd) past.
In last week’s episode, Simone, one of Season 19’s new class of surgical interns, entered into a situationship with Lucas (Niko Terho). Their courtship is complicated, though, by the fact that they’re now both living in Meredith’s old house, along with fellow intern Mika Yasuda (Midori Francis) — fixing it up after a fire nearly destroyed it. Trey will be coming along to make that incipient romance even knottier, presumably.
In the logline for this week’s episode, furnished by ABC, the Trey character is alluded to. “Teddy makes a challenging decision,” it reads.
