When Tiffany Alvord first started posting song covers on YouTube in 2008, she was a 16-year-old with a cheap camera, big dreams, and no idea how to navigate the music industry. Now, 10 years later, she’s an indie music pro with 3.2 million subscribers who regularly releases stunningly high-quality music videos for her covers and her own original songs. And 2019 is set to be her biggest year on the platform yet: on top of continuing to release covers and lifestyle videos (a genre she expanded into over the past couple of years), Alvord plans to release one new original song per month — music video and all.
For Alvord, much of her YouTube career has been Diy. She learned how to edit, how to create attractive thumbnails, how to make cover art for iTunes and then Spotify, and how to forge relationships with other pros in her space (like regular collaborator and fellow...

Sony Music, no longer just a label, has become a versatile producer of original programming. The company’s Sony Music Originals division is now known as Rumble Yard, and it is responsible for notable digital series like Thank You And Sorry and Car Star. At a NewFronts event it shared with Astronauts Wanted, Rumble Yard discussed the shows it plans to release in the near future, including partnerships with YouTube star Kurt Hugo Schneider and TV personality Al Roker.
Schneider, whose deal with Sony Music was announced back in November 2015, has gained a following in part for his ability to make instruments out of Coke bottles, cars, candy bars, and other objects. In his upcoming show, titled To The Beat, he will team up with artists like T-Pain and Aloe Blacc to remix their songs by adding in the eclectic instrumentation he is known for. Three bonafide classics of the rock ‘n’ roll canon are one step closer to getting their long-awaited official music videos!
Last December, in celebration of the legendary Elton John‘s 50 year songwriting partnership with master lyricist Bernie Taupin, the duo launched ‘Elton John: The Cut,’ in partnership with YouTube. The competition gave undiscovered talent across the globe an opportunity to create music videos for three of John’s best loved tracks—“Rocket Man,” “Tiny Dancer” and “Bennie and the Jets”—all released before the advent of MTV.
Now, People can exclusively announce the winners.
90-second video treatments were submitted from over 50 countries in January.

Kurt Hugo Schneider is no stranger to sponsored content, and throughout his many interactions with brands, he’s made music using everything from cars to Coke bottles. His latest instrument is Butterfinger candy bars, which he hooked up to digital devices to create the most bizarre cover of The Backstreet Boys you’ll ever see.
Schneider, working with the team at the Reach Agency, rigged up each Butterfinger to correspond to its own note. As his bandmates bit into the candy in front of them, they produced the pleasant melody of “I Want It That Way,” the 1999 boy band classic. Max Schneider and Alyson Stoner joined the fun as co-vocalists. As far as we can tell, they didn’t aid their singing with Butterfingers in any way, though they still sound great nonetheless.
As some of his commenters have noted, Kurt Schneider has mastered the art of seamlessly incorporating branded content into his videos.

Three of the most iconic pop songs in music history are finally getting the video treatment.
Elton John and his longtime lyricist Bernie Taupin are celebrating 50 years of songwriting magic by launching a competition for fans worldwide to create music videos for his hit ’70s tracks “Rocket Man,” “Tiny Dancer” and “Bennie and the Jets.”
Elton John: The Cut, in partnership with YouTube, will allow everyday creatives to enter 90-second video treatments for the tracks starting next month—but there are some rules. “Rocket Man” entries must use animation, “Tiny Dancer” treatments must be live-action and “Bennie and the Jets” clips must employ choreography.

Sony Music has its eye on the digital video world, and to get a better foothold in that space, it has teamed up with an established online comedy brand. The music corporation, which stands as one of the recording industry’s “Big Three,” has signed a multi-project development deal with Above Average, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The partnership between Sony Music and Above Average took hold last year, when the two companies worked together Thank You And Sorry, a web series starring Fun frontman Jack Antonoff. The series followed Antonoff as he toured with his current band Bleachers, which has released two albums through the Sony-owned RCA Records label. The series was made available through Google Play.
Since then, Sony Music has continued to explore its online video ambitions by announcing partnerships with digital-native creators like Kurt Hugo Schneider and Connor Franta. Above Average, which is run by Saturday Night Live producer Broadway Video,...

Original Song: "Heart Attack" by Demi Lovato
Cover Artists: Kurt Schneider, Chrissy Costanza and Sam Tsui
How It's Different: The fast-paced rhythm and techno vibe of Demi's original version sounds more rock 'n' roll when done by this trio.
Why We Love It: Kurt's drumming skills along with the powerful combination of Chrissy and Sam's vocals make for a completely different sound than we're used to hearing. It gives Demi's song a cool new twist, while still capturing the emotional intensity of the lyrics.
Better than the Original? Much as we enjoy this version, we're Team Demi for life. No one else is a singular powerhouse quite like her.

Original Song: Justin Bieber ft. Micki Minaj's pump-up hit "Beauty And A Beat."
Cover Artist: YouTube stars Alex Goot, Kurt Schneider (the guy behind this amazing video) and Chrissy Costanza.
How It's Different: The cover turns Bieber and Minaj's club-ready hit into a feel-good piano rock ballad.
Why We Love It: While the rendition sounds straight out of a certain musical high school TV show, the YouTube stars' collaboration blows every Justin Bieber "Glee" cover out of the water.
Better than the Original? We agree with the commenter who called the cover "much, much better than the original" -- but we'll see how it stands up to Jb's own acoustic version when "Believe: Acoustic" is released on January 28.
