Donald Trump’s acceptance speech on the South Lawn of the White House capped a week of moments that likely will be a lasting legacy of the 2020 Republican National Convention: The blurred lines it created between official government and partisan business.
The convention showed Trump’s determination to shatter norms for the purpose of reality TV like stunts and dramatic backdrops, even if it already has yielded ethics complaints.
From the standpoint of using the White House as a set, it certainly worked for the 1,500 or so who shed masks and other Covid-19 protocols to witness Trump’s speech in person, the prize being a fireworks show at the end.
Fox News’ chief White House correspondent John Roberts caught some flak on Twitter for writing favorably about the use of the location. “Incumbency is a powerful bully pulpit. The genie is out of the bottle,” he tweeted.

Donald Trump’s campaign and the Republican National Committee are under fire for the use of another piece of music: Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah.”
The singer-songwriter’s estate and Sony/Atv Publishing say that they specifically declined the Republican National Committee’s request for the song, but it was played anyway during the final night of the convention, as Trump delivered his acceptance speech from the South Lawn of the White House.
Michelle Rice, legal representative for Cohen’s estate, said in a statement that they were “surprised and dismayed” that the Rnc would use the song knowing they “had specifically declined the Rnc’s use request, and their rather brazen attempt to politicize and exploit in such an egregious manner ‘Hallelujah,’ one of the most important songs in the Cohen song catalogue.”
She said that they are exploring legal options but also got in a dig at the campaign.

Donald Trump would probably never claim to be a Leonard Cohen fan, but that didn’t stop him or his campaign from choosing to use the Canadian artist’s signature song, “Hallelujah,” not once but twice following the conclusion of his speech at the Republican National Convention Thursday night.
Many Cohen fans were displeased when they heard Tori Kelly’s recording of the song playing during the fireworks that capped Trump’s address — sandwiched right between “She’s a Grand Old Flag” and Lee Greenwood’s “God Bless the USA” as pyrotechnics spelled out “Trump” and “2020” over the Washington mall.
Said fans were even less enthused when “Hallelujah” was quickly reprised, on camera and at greater volume, in an operatic rendition by Christopher Macchio.
Some social media users demanded that Kelly explain the song’s use or disavow Trump. Clearly wanting to be kept out of it, Kelly took to...
