Sundance Institute has announced the 2024 Directors, Screenwriters, and Native Labs fellows.
The Native Lab takes place in person in Santa Fe, New Mexico, from April 29–May 4 and will support four fellows and two artists in residence. The Lab focuses on centring Indigeneity in the storytelling of participants from Native and Indigenous backgrounds and will work on feature film and episodic scripts through one-on-one feedback sections and roundtable discussions with advisors.

Burgeoning filmmakers that we had the chance to meet this past January in Jane Casey Modderno, Kristine Gerolaga, Hanna Gray Organschi, Sara Crow + David Rafailedes and Claire Fowler are fellows who’ll be returning for a second round with the Sundance Institute. The Sundance Institute has announced its fellows for the 2024 Directors, Screenwriters, and Native labs, which include a diverse mix of artists from the realms of film, TV, and theatre. For more than 40 years, participating in a Sundance lab has been a rite of passage for those seeking to work in the upper echelons of independent film. The developmental programs take place throughout the spring and summer and allow notable rising filmmakers and Indigenous artists to hone their craft under the mentorship of working professionals. Notable alumni of the programs include Quentin Tarantino, Paul Thomas Anderson, Ryan Coogler, Wes Anderson, and Chloe Zhao.

Further proof that the Sundance Institute’s Labs have made a firm commitment to include projects that fall in just about every genre, one of the filmmakers to find a sweet spot with the group is Kristine Gerolaga and her forthcoming fantasy horror feature film project that will not only introduce future viewers to a neat creature, but the flipside of a conversation that is still of the times. Finalists are now being revealed for this year’s 16 Days 16 Films festival, an annual competition that’s attracted entrants from around the world.
To qualify, films are directed by a filmmaker who identifies as female, with their films 25 minutes or under. This year’s selection all, in the words of the festival, ‘explore, emote, or educate on a form of violence against women.’
Partners for the festival include Un Women, The Geena Davis Institute and the BFI. Previous finalists have included How To Have Sex director Molly Manning Walker, and Girl director Adura Onashile.
