The 2024 Hobart International is only a Wta 250 tournament, but the draw promises a lot of exciting action regardless.
Held from January 8th to 13th, ahead of the season's first Grand Slam tournament in Melbourne, the Hobart International serves as a great opportunity for players to prepare themselves for the first major of the year.
Many took this chance, and while the majority of the higher-ranked players entered the 2024 Adelaide International draw, there are still many who want to play a Wta 250 tournament, and the leading name in the draw is Elise Mertens, who will be the top seed.
However, the Belgian won't have an easy task at the tournament, as already in her first match, she'll take on the 2022 Australian Open finalist, Danielle Collins, who dropped to the 54th place in the Wta Rankings in recent seasons.

Aryna Sabalenka won the 2023 Australian Open, and she started this year on a high note as well, putting forward early candidacy to do so again.
Sabalenka had a fantastic 2023 campaign, which began in Melbourne with the Australian Open trophy. She's looking even better this year with some amazing early performances at the 2024 Brisbane International.
She played well in Abu Dhabi at the World Tennis League and looks even better in Brisbane. A dominant first win was followed up by yet another crushing win over Lin Zhu.
The match actually started with an early break for the Chinese player, which is funny because that's the only game she would win in the match.
Sabalenka broke back immediately and then added another break and then another, and it was just not a pretty sight if you are a fan of Zhu. The Belarusian just crushed her from the baseline with her raw power,...

The Thailand Open in the district of Hua Hin returns for a second edition as a fully-fledged Tour-level tournament on the Wta tour.
Running from January 29th to February 4th, this Wta 250 tournament will welcome 32 players to compete for ranking points and a main tour title. As one of Thailand's top tourist destinations, Hua Hin will also be a major sporting attraction at the end of January.
Four of the world's Top 50 players have already committed to play in the event, which is held on outdoor hard courts at the True Arena in Hua Hin, including 2023 Australian Open semifinalist Magda Linette. Since its inception in 2019, the Thailand Open has crowned a new champion each season.
The Pole is the tournament's top seed and a former champion (2020) when the event was staged at an International level. China's Lin Zhu became the inaugural champion when the tournament was a freshly minted 250-level event last season.

Aryna Sabalenka will want to challenge Iga Swiatek in 2024 again, and she started her charge well at the 2024 Brisbane International, beating Lucia Bronzetti in straight sets.
The Polish player already got to show her qualities in 2024, and she did show that her dominance is nowhere to be gone. While Swiatek competes at the United Cup, the Belarusian plays at the Wta 500 tournament in Brisbane as the top seed, and she showed that she means business already in her first match at the event.
As the top seed, Sabalenka had a first-round bye, and in the second round of the event, she took on Lucia Bronzetti, who overcame Ashlyn Krueger in the first round, and whom she never met before.
Already in the first game of the match, the world no. 2 faced a break point, but from there, it was a dominant ride that never seemed to be stopping.

The 2024 Brisbane International will be one of the most exciting Wta 500 tournaments of the season, and the tournament's draw has been released.
With the new season starting, there's not many more exciting tournaments than the 2024 Brisbane International, running from December 31st, 2023, until January 7th, 2024.
While the start of the new season is a good enough of a story line, there's another major storyline, and that's the return of a four-time Grand Slam champion, Naomi Osaka, who will play her first tournament in over a year.
The Japanese player is motivated to come back and she already knows her first opponent in Brisbane, as Osaka will take on Tamara Korpatsch, with her possible second-round match being against the former world no. 1, Karolina Pliskova.
But Osaka isn't the only exciting player at the tournament, as all players will want to fight for their share of the prize money and points. Aryna Sabalenka,...

The 2024 Hobart International promises a lot of exciting action with a very solid entry list for a Wta 250 tournament held from January 8th to 13th, 2024.
The Wta 250 event held at the Hobart International Tennis Centre doesn't always attract the strongest field, as it's held between Wta 500 tournaments and the Australian Open, but every year some good players find their way to Hobart.
In 2024, it will be the 2017 US Open champion, Sloane Stephens, who will compete at the tournament. Ahead of the event, the tournament organizers were sad to announce that last year's champion, Lauren Davis had to withdraw from the tournament.
"Whilst we’re excited to announce our full field today, unfortunately Lauren Davis has had to make the tough decision to withdraw due to injury. We wish her a really good recovery and hope to see her back for our 30th Hobart International in 2025."

British No. 1 Katie Boulter leads the list of nominations for the Wta Most Improved Player of the Year award alongside four other players.
This distinction is bestowed upon a player ranked inside the Top 100 and who showed substantial improvement throughout the season. Improvement in this case is attributed to form, results, and ranking. Boulter has been honored in this category thanks to her best-ever season on tour.
The 27-year-old started the season playing on the Itf circuit and ranked World No. 136. She excelled at that level winning one title from three finals. It was during the grass swing when Boulter made the whole world take notice of her talent.
She won the Wta 250 in Nottingham - her first title at the Tour level - in the historic all-British final. That result gave Boulter the blueprint to break the world's Top 50 for the first time thanks to third-round finishes at Wimbledon and the US Open.

Aryna Sabalenka will start her eighth week at the top of the Wta rankings, but the big question is whether she will stay there beyond Sunday.
Sabalenka is in a race with Poland's Iga Swiatek , the former World No. 1, who wants her crown back. The Wta Finals, which commenced on Sunday, will determine their fate at the end of the week. Just 630 points seperate the world's top two who will vie to win the season finale for the first time.
The regular Wta tennis season came to an end this past week, culminating with one last tournament in Zhuhai - the Wta Elite Trophy. Brazil's Beatriz Haddad Maia defeated China's new star Qinwen Zheng in the final. Haddad Maia rose as high as 11th after that triumph with 2,855 points - just 25 points short of breaking the Top 10.

The 2023 Wta Elite Trophy is the second-tier year-end tournament on the Wta Tour, which will consist of 12 singles players in the group stage. The Top 11 players who missed out on qualification for the Wta Finals automatically qualify for this event.

Azalea Group:
The first group contains former French Open champion Barbora Krejcikova , who bagged two titles in 2023, and was a runner-up in Zhegnzhou . Participating in this event is optional, and the Czech is also an entrant in doubles at the Wta Finals.

The 2023 Jiangxi Open will be played in the industrialized city of Nanchang from October 16th through 22nd, and the draw for this year's event has been released.
This Wta 250 event offers the lower-ranked players a chance to lift a Wta title. But there are plenty of experienced heads in the 32-player field featuring three Top 30 players who could halt that dream. In the past, Chinese players have enjoyed massive success at the tournament from the days when it was contested at the 125K level.
Rebecca Peterson is the only foreign player to walk away with the trophy from Nanchang back in 2019 when she beat Elena Rybakina. But it appears the Swede is nursing an injury, having not played since the US Open over a month ago, so we are guaranteed a new champion.
The top seed is Beatriz Haddad Maia who will be expected to charge past Japan's Nao Hibino in her opener.

Chinese number one on the Wta Tour, Qinwen Zheng revealed the reason why her coach, Wim Fissette wasn't with her at the Asian Games.
Qinwen Zheng is a really talented player who is getting better rapidly. She represented her country at the Asian Games, ending up as the champion after beating compatriot Lin Zhu in the final. She's certainly one of the best young players with tremendous weapons and a very bright future.
Noted coach Wim Fissette recognized that pretty early and jumped on the opportunity to work with her, and it was going really well. She's right around 20th in the world and fairly young, with stardom pretty much ensured in the coming years.
But it will happen without Fissette because the coach left Zheng for another player. As comical as that reads, it's really what happened as they stopped working together after the US Open, and she opened...

World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka maintained her 1,071-point gap over second-placed Iga Swiatek , kicking off her second week atop the Wta standings.
Sabalenka and Swiatek were not in action this past week, as were a number of Top 10 players who preferred to take some time off from the rigors of competition after the 2023 US Open. Nonetheless, there were two significant changes in the world's Top 10.
Elena Rybakina and Jessica Pegula swapped places in 4th and 5th, respectively. Rybakina dropped down after her runner-up points from Portoroz came off, allowing Pegula to overtake her. While Barbora Krejcikova re-entered the world's Top 10 (10th spot) after capturing the San Diego Open last weekend.
Krejcikova is one of three Czech players in the world's Top 10 , along with Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova (6th) and French Open finalist Karolina Muchova (8th). She breaks that barrier once again after a tough summer in which she lost four matches on the spin.

The Japan Championships being held in Osaka returns to the calendar once again, after four long years.
The draw for the 2023 tournament was revealed with a handful of intriguing matches to look up to. Without the established cadre of top 50 players (outside one entrant), this could be a massive opportunity for the Wta 's undercards to lift a rare trophy at Tour level.
Ukraine's Lesia Tsurenko has pulled out from the event and has since been replaced by Panna Udvardy. She was meant to be the top seed, but that honor will now go to Lin Zhu , one of China's most improved players this year.
The seedings have been reshuffled, with another withdrawal - Peyton Stearns, who recently broke through to the second week of the US Open. Stearns' place has gone to fellow American Ashlyn Krueger, who was among the early alternates.

The 2023 Guangzhou Open will officially herald the return of Tour-level tennis back on Chinese soil.
For the first time in four years, we'll have tournaments taking place in China , and the 17th edition of the Guangzhou Open will have a new home at the aesthetically built Nansha International Tennis Center. It will be held from September 18th to 23rd on hard courts and it is part of the Wta 250 series.
The tournament was last played in 2019 at the Guangzhou Tianhe Sports Center, where Sofia Kenin won her third title of that season. Unless Kenin takes a late wild card into the tournament, she won't be coming back to Guangzhou.
The draw features a 32-player singles field. Despite a lack of prominent names, Poland's Magda Linette is the highest-ranked player in the draw at No. 24. Linette tends to do well in Asia, winning one of her two career titles in that...

New York, Sep 4 (Ians) World No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz eased past Daniel Evans 6-2, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 to book his spot in the fourth round of the US Open.
Despite his loss, the Briton became the first player to take a set from Alcaraz in this year’s tournament, and Alcaraz described Evans as a tricky opponent, reports Xinhua.
“He always wants to go to the net. Great slices, good touch,” said Alcaraz. “I think this is my game as well, so we played a pretty good match. I think people loved that. We made great points, great shots, a lot of different situations probably than in other matches. I’m really happy to get through and play the fourth round again in the US Open.”

Top seed Iga Swiatek will face former Wta number one Karolina Pliskova in the second round of the 2023 Canadian Open in Montreal on Wednesday, August 9, 2023.
Iga Swiatek kicks off her North American hard-court swing against a familiar foe. Karolina Pliskova is a former number one and has been to two Grand Slam finals, but never won a major title. Unlike the Pole, Pliskova has a very good record in this tournament, reaching the final back in 2021.
Swiatek has once again compiled one of her best seasons, even though the numbers don't quite match up to her majestic 2022 season, She is still on course to equal or even better her 67 Wta wins last year. The 22-year-old arrives in Montreal hot on the heels of her first career title on home soil in Warsaw a week or so ago .
Pliskova will enter this match on the back of two wins from nine matches.

Montreal (Canada), Aug 8 (Ians) Former World No.1 Karolina Pliskova defeated Zhu Lin and lined up a second-round clash with reigning World No.1 Iga Swiatek on a rain-hit opening day at the Canadian Open, here.
Pliskova of the Czech Republic scored a 6-3, 6-7(8), 6-2 victory over China’s Zhu Lin in their first-round match. Pliskova, who was the runner-up in Montreal two years ago, took 2 hours and 22 minutes of play to overcome Zhu at the Wta 1000 event on Monday.
The day’s first rain delay paused that match at 8-8 in the second-set tiebreak, just after Pliskova had missed out on two match points. Upon resumption, Zhu won the next two points to eke out the second set, but Pliskova rebounded in the third set, where she broke Zhu’s serve three times.

It's another milestone week ticked off by Iga Swiatek , who starts her 71st week as Wta 's number, but there is more to it.
A short while ago, Swiatek held the number one ranking for the longest duration among active players , a record that she forfeited briefly with the imminent return from retirement of former Wta number one Caroline Wozniacki , who spent 71 weeks as Wta's number one.
Wozniacki ranked in 10th spot among Wta players who held top spot for the most weeks, a list that is topped by 22-time Grand Slam singles winner Steffi Graf (377 weeks). Well, Wozniacki has some company now in the form of Iga Swiatek, who ties the Dane in the top 10.
What makes Swiatek's achievement a little more ostentatious than Wozniacki's, she has hoarded on the number ranking for 71 consecutive weeks. Since Ashleigh Barty's retirement , no Wta player has managed to unseat the Polish star from her perch.

Iga Swiatek practised with tape on her mouth a few days ago leaving many puzzled but she offered an explanation during her press conference.
Swiatek arrived in Montreal early for the Canadian Open and practised a few times. One of those practices had her sporting tape over her mouth which left many fans puzzled as to why. Some speculated it was a new training technique and she confirmed it was.
Speaking during her introductory press conference Swiatek confirmed that it was something that was advised to her but she didn't want to go in-depth saying that she would explain it wrong. It's supposed to benefit her endurance among other things.
I don't get it either. No, but, it's harder to breathe when you're only breathing with your nose and it's easier for my heart rate to go up, you know? And I think it has something to do with endurance,...

Iga Swiatek 's first practice session on the Montreal hard courts sparked some curiosity as she was pictured wearing tape on her mouth.
Fresh from capturing her first career title on home soil at the Poland Open a week ago, Swiatek embarks on her latest adventure in Montreal, where she arrived a couple of days ago and wasted no time in hitting the practice courts at the 2023 Canadian Open .
The Polish star was captured with a tape on her mouth during a hitting session - a practice that is common among athletes. While there is no conclusive evidence of what the pros and cons are of wearing a tape over the mouth, fans on X, formerly Twitter, pointed out that it can help to improve nasal breathing, allowing for more efficient oxygen intake.
Nasal breathing is also linked to oxygen transmission to key muscles in the body and leads to better performance.

London, July 2 (Ians) Wimbledon 2023, the third Grand Slam of the season, is drawing near: the grass courts are freshly-cut, the all-white kits are ready to be donned, and more importantly, some new tennis records are waiting to be hit.
Novak Djokovic, at the age of 36, has made his intentions clear — playing for the record books.
The Serbian legend has Roger Federer’s record of eight Wimbledon titles as well as a 24th major in his sights as he closes in on a first calendar Grand Slam in 54 years.
Djokovic won his 23rd Grand Slam earlier last month at Roland Garros. A 24th would help him tie the record with Margaret Court, reports Xinhua.
The second seed and defending champion will open his campaign against Argentina’s Pedro Cachin, with the first dangerous obstacle in his path possibly coming in the fourth round against former semifinalist and No.17 seed Hubert Hurkacz or Italian No.

Novak Djokovic attempted to dry Wimbledon 's Centre Court after the play was stopped due to rain.
The first day of the 2023 Wimbledon started with a match of the men's singles defending champion Novak Djokovic, facing off against Argentinian opponent, Pedro Cachin. What started as an ordinary match, with Djokovic securing the first set 6-3, quickly took an unexpected turn as rainfall forced a temporary pause.
While short breaks due to weather are commonplace in tennis, this delay at the hallowed Centre Court lasted longer than anticipated. With the rain washed away and the roof closed, the dampness of the court remained, slowing down the game's resumption.
The No. 1 Court, which also has the roof, had already wrapped up its first match in which Iga Swiatek defeated Lin Zhu , and was commencing the next between Casper Ruud and Laurent Lokoli. However, the Centre Court became a spectacle of its own,...

No signs of illness for Iga Swiatek as she started her 2023 Wimbledon campaign with an emphatic victory over Lin Zhu in two sets.
Iga Swiatek is the top seed at Wimbledon and she played the first match in line with her status. The Polish player is apparently not a great player on grass but she's certainly better than a lot of other players even with the lack of experience.

Iga Swiatek is the top seed at Wimbledon and she played the first match in line with her status. The Polish player is apparently not a great player on grass but she's certainly better than a lot of other players even with the lack of experience.

According to many, only an injury can stop the Serb , as he'll bid to level Roger Federer's legendary eight titles in the All England Club.
The biggest favourite in the Wta draw, Iga Swiatek will start her tournament too, only thirty minutes earlier than the 36-year-old Serb. The top-seeded Pole will take on Lin Zhu on No. 1 in what should...

London, June 30 (Ians) World no 1 Iga Swiatek of Poland will open her Wimbledon 2023 women’s singles campaign against Zhu Lin while defending champion Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan has been handed a tough first-week draw.
Fresh off a successful Roland Garros title defence, Swiatek is projected to face No.7 seed Coco Gauff, against whom she has yet to lose a set in seven meetings, in the quarterfinals.
On the other hand, the Kazakh No.3 seed will open her campaign against the American Shelby Rogers, who has defeated Rybakina twice in five previous meetings.
In the second round, Rybakina could face Alize Cornet, whose 25 triumphs over Top 10 opponents include an upset of Swiatek at Wimbledon 2022 that snapped the World No.1’s 37-match winning streak.
There could also be a rematch of last year’s Wimbledon final in the quarterfinals, where Rybakina is projected to face No.6 seed Ons Jabeur of Tunisia.

Bad Homburg (Germany), June 30 (Ians) Top seed Iga Swiatek was on Friday forced to withdraw from her Bad Homburg Open semifinal against Lucia Bronzetti due to GI illness.
“I’m so sorry but I have to pull out of my match today,” Swiatek said in a statement on Twitter.

Swiatek had defeated opponents including Wimbledon semifinalist Tatjana Maria and No.9 seed Anna Blinkova to reach her first grass-court semifinal in Bad Homburg. Having captured her fourth Grand Slam title at Roland Garros last month, she will carry a 10-match winning streak into Wimbledon next week, where she opens up against Zhu Lin.

Iga Swiatek won't be playing in the 2023 Bad Homburg Open semifinals after she was forced to withdraw from the tournament.
The 22-year-old entered the grass-court season with very low expectations, but those skyrocketed after she started to dominate against her opponents once again . However, the highest-ranked player on the Wta Tour won't win her first grass-court trophy in Germany, as she was forced to withdraw from the Wta 250 tournament.
After beating Tatjana Maria, Jil Teichmann, and Anna Blinkova, Swiatek was supposed to take on World No. 65, Lucia Bronzetti, who is enjoying probably the best week of her career, which will be now even better as she's set to play in the final.
Swiatek, who is now certainly already focusing on the Wimbledon draw , was a big favourite to win the title at the 2023 Bad Homburg Open, but shortly before the semifinal match, she announced that she won't be able to...

Venus Williams' days as a doubles player are over as her US Open appearance last year was her final one with a partner on the court.
Venus Williams partnered with her sister Serena Williams a lot of times in her career winning Grand Slam trophies together. Their match at last year's US Open was her last doubles match ever as she confirmed in an Instagram Q & A.
She was asked whether she will play doubles in the future and she said that those days were over. Serena Williams is a retired player and with her retirement, the doubles career of Venus Williams also finished.
When Serena retired I retired from doubles as well. When you have Serena Williams as a partner you have seen the glory at the mountaintop, you can't go any higher! Sorry, I don't have better news.
It's a disappointing thing for many who were hoping that...

Venus Williams will continue her return to the grass court season after receiving a wildcard entry to the 2023 Birmingham Classic, a Wta 250 event.
The five-time Wimbledon champion has already been confirmed as an entrant to the 2023 Libema Open in mid-June as she aims to build fitness and get match time for the grass season. Williams has not played competitive tennis since she had to withdraw from the Asb Classic in January due to an injury during a second-round defeat to Zhu Lin.
The 42-year-old has endured a tough spell in recent years and has fallen down to 701st in the Wta rankings as a result. Injuries and a lack of playing time have hampered the former world number one's progress, although she did win her first match in 18 months at the Asb Classic before her hamstring injury.
It will also be Williams' first appearance at the Birmingham Classic since 2019 when she reached the quarter-finals.
