For all the live-action manga/anime adaptations of popular properties, it is nice to see filmmakers give lesser-known works the cinematic treatment. Yama Wayama's manga series “Let's Go Karaoke!” while not on the same level of popularity as other comedic illustrated works, has garnered a positive reception in Japan and internationally. Surely, the strange yet humorous concept of the head of a high school choir giving singing lessons to a pitiful yakuza lieutenant could be solidly translated to film, especially in the hands of a talented filmmaker like Nobuhiro Yamashita, best known for his critically acclaimed feature “Linda Linda Linda.” Sadly, “Let's Go Karaoke!” is a movie that accomplishes the unfortunate feat of being both a lackluster comedy and a poorly conceived drama.

Netflix’s original Japanese reality show Love Like a K-Drama combines the drama of reality television with the romance of Korean dramas to create a unique show that is a perfect blend of the two concepts. But does it really work? I’ve spent the last four weeks watching this show despite having no taste for reality TV (thanks to the job), and as a casual cynic, I’d say it doesn’t hit the mark. I will admit, that this is only my second experience watching a dating show (I didn’t choose this life), and it’s left me with the same sour taste as the last one. Although I will admit, it was fun to be biased towards one of the members. The show may be trying to prove that language isn’t a barrier to love, but it seems this “love” is lost in translation. The...

I suppose Love Like A K-Drama is a direct result of the monstrous global success of Netflix’s Korean dating show “Single’s Inferno.” As your resident skeptic, I will admit that I do feel quite invested in this show; call it collateral damage if you will, and there’s quite the drama to go over in the second set of episodes that just dropped. The premise alone had me confused for the first four episodes until I started to understand what was really happening. Dating show-newbie problems, maybe. I’ve started to understand why people get so absorbed in these things because, you know, I’ve been rooting for a pair, and now they’ve suddenly drifted apart, and I’m here hating on the guy and hurting for the girl. Quite a disappointing turn of events really.

Four budding Japanese actresses go to Korea to find love as well as a footing in the world of K-dramas, with four Korean actors by their sides. The question lies: can a kiss make it go from acting to true feelings? This is what Love Like a K-drama, the new Japanese reality dating(?) show, is trying to answer. As someone who can’t see beyond the inauthenticity of all things reality TV, I’m probably the wrong person to judge this particular show, but Love Like a K-drama had me somewhat invested. Specifically, it’s the cultural difference between the Koreans and the Japanese that makes the stories exciting to follow. On November 28th, Netflix released four episodes. Yes, within four episodes, there have been confessions, a lot of crying, and some sweet moments somewhere in there.

The concept is actually rather baffling.
