Fans of the Emmy Award-winning comedy series “Master of None” were surprised when the third season of the Netflix series dropped on May 23. Co-creator, executive producer, writer, and director Aziz Ansari had completely flipped the switch on the series.
Premiering in 2015, “Master of None,” which was co-created by Alan Yang, revolved around New York actor Dev Shah, who was best known for his Go-Gurt commercial. The second season released in 2017 was set in New York and Italy. But in this third outing, “Moments of Love,” Dev is just a recurring character. Lena Waithe, who plays Dev’s good friend Denise, a lesbian author who smokes weed with abundance, and Naomi Ackie, who plays her wife Alicia, are the focus.
The style and tone have also changed. Set primarily in the couple’s rural New York home (the series was shot in England) “Moments in Love” unfolds more like an Ingmar Bergman drama with long takes,...

“It’s a rare opportunity to work on something that can express your politics,” reveals the “Little America” music supervisor Zach Cowie. In our recent webchat (watch the exclusive video interview above), he continues, “I’m like ‘everyone’s welcome.’ Especially in the time we are living, to contribute to that message artistically. For the title sequences I had the idea for ‘The Rock’ episode to be an international song, but sampled in a big American hip hop track. To me that’s the essence of the show. Hip hop is made in America, but to make it you borrow things from all over the place.”
“Little America” is a new anthology comedy series from Apple TV+. Cowie explains, “There’s eight different episodes, all based off real stories, of people immigrating to America. Every episode you are dealing with a different country of origin and a different time period.

Andy Cabic was exploring the stacks in a Tower Records in Japan when he had an epiphany. The musician, who fronts the folk-rock band Vetiver, was on tour with Devendra Banhart in the mid-2000s when he walked into the store and found displays highlighting Japanese artists from the Seventies and Eighties, like Tatsuro Yamashita, Sugar Babe and Happy End. He spent the next few hours tucked in a listening booth, devouring this music that was at once totally new, yet somehow familiar. It sounded like American soft rock, Aor,...

The use of The Clash’s 1982 hit single, “Should I Stay or Should I Go,” in “Stranger Things” is a great example of why there’s a new Emmy category this season honoring the creativity of the music supervisor. The Duffer Brothers inserted the song into their ’80s sci-fi script to emotionally connect the Indiana family that’s separated by the Upside Down dimension. However, if Emmy-nominated music supervisor Nora Felder hadn’t convinced The Clash of its importance, the Duffers would’ve had to find a replacement.
Fortunately, the “Stranger Things” showrunners (Matt and Ross Duffer) were never aware there was even a problem obtaining the licensing rights. “It was my job to protect them,” said Felder Thursday night during a Q&A panel discussion. “They were worried about trivializing the song and needed to see how it was going to be used in scenes, and for the first...

The new Music Supervisor category this Emmy season finally honors the supervisor’s creative contribution to narrative storytelling and music aesthetic: Licensing songs that are appropriately iconic and emotionally resonant, while touting some of the hottest new talent.
Here are the nominees: Thomas Golubic (“Better Call Saul” — “Sunk Costs”), Susan Jacobs (“Big Little Lies” — “You Get What You Need”), Manish Raval, Jonathan Leahy, Tom Wolfe (“Girls”— “Goodbye Tour”), Zach Cowie, Kerri Drootin (“Master of None” — “Amarsi Un Po”), and Nora Felder (“Stranger Things” — “Chapter Two: The Weirdo on Maple Street”).
The results included three female supervisors (Jacobs, Drootin, and Felder) and demonstrated the brand power of HBO (“Big Little Lies,” “Girls”) and Netflix (“Master of None,” “Stranger Things”). But in the end, it came down to a battle of dueling playlists.

For the first time ever, the 2017 Primetime Emmys will hand out an award for Outstanding Music Supervision, acknowledging the creative contributions made by the music supervisors on TV series. It’s an award that’s long overdue; music supervision is an often misunderstood art form thought to be as simple as pulling songs off an iPod. “There’s so much work that goes into it that you don’t see on the screen,” says Amanda Krieg Thomas,...

Among several other changes put into place by the Television Academy this year, in anticipation of the 2017 Emmys, the category of Music Supervision was added to the fold—and rightly so. As with the composer, the cinematographer and every other craftsman working in television, the music supervisor plays a critical role in establishing an atmosphere and tone particular to a given series, as illustrated by music supervisor Zach Cowie’s work in Season 2 of Netflix original…...

The Austin Film Society hosts its annual Texas Film Awards, one of the most high-profile events in the city, on Thursday night, March 12. This year marks the awards' 15th year and to celebrate its "crystal anniversary" of honoring the best in Texas film, honorees include some of the biggest names in the industry from actors to producers to writers. Local filmmaker Mike Judge is this year's emcee.
The event itself is sold out, but a few tickets are still available to The Texas Party, the after-party featuring a DJ set by Wooden Wisdom, aka Elijah Wood and Zach Cowie.
In anticipation of Thursday's event, I thought a spotlight on each of the honorees and some of their finest contributions to the cinematic world was more than in order.
L.M. Kit Carson -- The American Dreamer (1971)
Precious few screenwriters in the history of film have been gifted with a voice as unique and diverse as Carson's.

Written by actress Rashida Jones (I Love You, Man) and her actor friend Will McCormack (Boiler Room), Celeste and Jesse Forever is an unusual out-of-love story about two people who try to maintain their best friendship despite being unofficially divorced. Although the two writers were never married in real life, the film (directed by Lee Toland Krieger) is inspired by their own relationship, with Andy Samberg playing Will’s “part” opposite Rashida Jones as Celeste. McCormack is in the film as a drug-dealing friend of Celeste’s named “Skillz.”
In an exclusive interview, I sat down with the amicable writing duo for a chat about their first film. Amongst many things, we talked about their first produced project, the key to good stoned acting, and we also had a very real conversation towards the end about Jones’ perspective on platonic relationships.
Celeste and Jesse Forever opens in Chicago theaters on August 10.

Rashida Jones wanted to tell a certain story, play a specific character, and truly challenge herself. So she did what most actors can't: She wrote her own movie.
Along with close friend/ fellow actor Will McCormack, Jones penned a story based on their own relationship: The two dated briefly before deciding they were better off as friends, and then became as close as could be. The result is "Celeste and Jesse Forever," a funny, heartfelt film about a divorced couple intent on remaining BFFs, with Jones co-starring alongside Andy Samberg in the title roles.
The Harvard-educated daughter of legendary music producer Quincy Jones and comedic actress best known for TV's "Parks and Recreation" got candid with us about baring her soul in "Celeste" and the internet's ridiculous obsession with her race.
So is it safe to say "Celeste and Jesse" is the most personal project you've worked on thus far?...
