For the past month or so, I’ve been doing daily YouTube reviews of various things, from food and drink to movies to blog posts on my channel, LonsTV. Occasionally, these reviews have included web shows, mainly because there are so many good ones and so precious few outlets highlighting all this great new content. (Also because there are already a ton of YouTube videos alerting to exactly how much Clash of the Titans sucked, so this was a chance to make my own mark.) And now, once a week, I will be bringing these reviews to you, the Tubefilter reading public. This week, I’m looking at the new series Night of the Zombie King. It’s technically a spin-off of Gold, the humorous slice-of-life take on the world of tabletop role-playing gamers, concerning a relatively minor character from the original series who has been dropped into a different setting with all new characters.

Startups have been known to pivot all the time, but it isn’t often that you see this from Streamy-nominated web series. Gold, the tabletop RPG playing comedy series is back today with Gold: Night of the Zombie King, a mini-series that turns towards the dramatic side of the its gamer characters. Creator David Nett wrote the new project alongside fellow Gold stars Rick Robinson and Andrew R. Deutsch. The trio brought on new faces for the offshoot to join Gold actor James Ellis Lane, scoring indie vets Jonathan Nail (Solo), Stephanie Thorpe (After Judgment), Brian Majestic (Solo) and a standout performance from Maxwell Glick (lonelygirl15). Gold, a series about the trials and tribulations of a group of La-based pen and paper tabletop gamers, has always been a labor of love. Beginning as a screenplay by actor/creator David Nett (Gold, The Adventures of Justin and Alden), Andrew Deutsch and Nett teamed up to adapt the script to a web series. Continuing their day jobs, where Deutsch revealed is where they met and began their "nerd war" (Deutsch admits that Nett would win), and casting talented friends, Gold went on to nominations in both the first and second annual Streamy Awards and the two creators are now expanding the universe the show exists in with Night of the Zombie King. Based on the popular character Jaz (leader of the Dangerous Gamers from Gold Season 1, episode 4), who is played by the talented James Lane (The Ballad of Mary and Ernie), Night of the Zombie King takes place...

The nominees for the 2010 Streamys were announced today. The Streamys celebrate online television programming and this year they have a fantastic line up of nominees. Last year was the Streamys debut year and the winners included high profile shows such as Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog and the exceptional Battlestar Galactica web series The Face of the Enemy.
This year there is even more competition with some really interesting content now being released on the web rather than through more traditional media routes. Two of my favourites from this year’s nominee list are the excellent Interview Project which is presented by davidlynch.com and the slightly flawed but thoroughly enjoyable Angel of Death, created by Ed Brubaker and starring Zoe Bell, which also received a DVD release last year.
The awards ceremony takes place on April 11th 2010 and the full list of nominees is listed below with handy links...
