Vice President Kamala Harris traveled to Florida on Friday, where she addressed the state board of education’s approval of controversial new standards for Black history in public schools, which includes harmful guidelines that state people benefited from being enslaved.

The NAACP and BET have announced the performers and presenters for the 53rd NAACP Image Awards.

Nine-time Grammy Award winner and recent Super Bowl halftime show headliner Mary J. Blige will perform at the live show. The ceremony will also feature Samuel L. Jackson, who will be honored with the NAACP Chairman’s Award, and New York Times editor and journalist Nikole Hannah-Jones, who will be presented with the Social Justice Impact Award. During the ceremony, members of the Mexican American Legislative Caucus, Texas House Democratic Caucus, and Texas Legislative Black Caucus will receive the Roy Wilkins Civil Rights Award, for their work protecting the freedom to vote in Texas.

Presenters for the awards show include Issa Rae, Kerry Washington, LL Cool J, Michael Strahan, Morgan Freeman, Paula Patton, Questlove, Simu Liu, Tiffany Haddish, Zendaya, NAACP President Derrick Johnson and NAACP Board Chairman Leon W. Russell.

Update, 1:48 Pm Pt: Joe Biden characterized pending voting rights legislation in historic terms, as he called for changing the filibuster rules of the Senate to pass them.

That includes getting rid of the 60-vote threshold specifically for the purposes of passing two voting bills. The legislation would, among other things, end gerrymandering, ensure early and mail-in voting and reestablish protections for minorities’ access to the polls.

“Let the majority prevail, and if that bare minimum is blocked, we have no option but to change Senate rules, including getting rid of the filibuster for this,” Biden said in his speech from Atlanta.

Biden, who spent 36 years in the Senate, has previously been reluctant to change those rules, but said that the body had been rendered “a shell of its former self.”

The NAACP Image Awards is sticking with what works: Anthony Anderson has been set to host the trophy show for a sixth consecutive year.

Winners of the 50th annual Image Awards will be revealed March 30 at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood. The two-hour show, which moves to late March after taking place in January or February for the past several years, will air live this year for the first time — starting at 9 Pm Et on TV One.

Anderson stars in and executive produces ABC’s Black-ish and has won two Image Awards for the role. The series is a four-time winner. Anderson next appears in the Netflix film Beats.
