Quick question. This is 2014 right? You wouldn’t guess that from watching Varsity Blood!
It would seem that the trend for producing horror movies that harken back to the 80s and the golden age of the slasher, has officially become the “norm” for modern examples of the genre. Every month there seems to be another slasher movie that hits DVD and/or VOD which looks and feels like the self-referential post-Scream years never happened. But I’m not complaining, oh no! As a Huge fan of slasher movies (even the likes of Iced and Terror at Tenkiller) I relish the opportunity to watch each and every new entry into the much-maligned genre.
Thankfully the quality of modern slashers has,...

The trailer for Varsity Blood shows the homicidal mascot. Dressed in full regalia, the Native American mascot lays waste to several high-schoolers. The bloodspray is plentiful and fans of horror can view the clip below. Release Date: August 19, 2014 (DVD). Director/writer: Jake Helgren. Three years earlier Billy Corbin died trapped in a fiery storeroom. Now the ones who let him burn are attending their school homecoming party and it could be their last. It’s payback time without pity for the young, the foolish and the beautiful. One by one they disappear, each meeting a gory, terrifying end. The corridors of Winston High are dark, slippery and wet with the blood of those who came before.
First off, you’re probably all aware of just how much I love slasher movies. If I have one particular genre love (behind 80s teen flicks I might add) it’s 80s slashers. I could never get enough...

Writer/director Jake Helgren has revealed three stills from his new slasher horror project 'Varsity Blood'. It's the classic tale of bullish jocks and hot cheerleaders doing all they can to survive a rampaging mystery murderer. The flick is in post and stars Lexi Giovagnoli ('Bloody Homecoming'), Wesley Scott, Debbie Rochon ('Bikini Bloodbath Car Wash'), Blair Jackson, Elyse Bigler, Natalie Peyton, Melody Herron, Jesse Ferraro, Kiarra Hogan, Payton Wood and the gorgeous Elle Lamont -below ('Machete Kills'). No word yet on a planned release or in what format but our guess would be around Halloween time and likely a direct to DVD offering. Check out the new pics below....

Humans Versus Zombies is a film based on a role playing game played on college campuses. The game involves Nerf guns, marshmallows and zombies chasing survivors. Rumour has it that the survivors have never won. The film version of the game is written and directed by Brian T. Jaynes who is notorious to this reviewer for creating the abysmal and 28Dla Worst Film entry Boggy Creek. Jaynes seems to be making improvements in his photography here; however, his storytelling still lacks tension and the story for Humans Versus Zombies is uncompelling. Maybe viewers would be best off playing the game rather than watching the film.
The story is simple enough. Several college students play Humans Versus Zombies on their college campus. Then, after the H1N1 is released,...
