You could be forgiven for feeling as though you’ve stepped back in time while watching Noah Pritzker’s middling, middle-class, midlife crisis comedy. There’s a sweet-hearted but dated dad rock quality to this tale that revolves around the men in a single family and their relationship woes that transports you to the mid-90s era of Billy Crystal vehicles.
The plot revolves around the family of Peter Pearce (Griffen Dunne), who, in a prologue-of-sorts, is seen trying to convince his elderly father (Richard Benjamin) not to divorce his mother, while his older son Nick (James Norton) is enjoying a meet-cute moment with his co-worker Thea (Rachel Zeiger-Haag). Fast-forward six years and Peter is the one with no ring on his finger, his father’s intentions to “play the field” for 25 years have crashed against the reality of dementia and Nick is about to tie the knot with Thea.

"We gotta get that briefcase." Netflix has debuted a trailer for indie romantic comedy Tramps, from writer & director Adam Leon, of the NYC film Gimme the Loot previously. The story follows an aspiring chef in NYC who gets caught up in a crazy adventure when he has to help his brother finish a drug deal. But when the briefcase exchange goes wrong, he ends up running all over the city trying to figure out how to get things back in order. Callum Turner stars, along with Grace Van Patten, Michal Vondel, Mike Birbiglia, Margaret Colin, Louis Cancelmi, and Rachel Zeiger-Haag. I guess the unique twist in this is that he falls for the driver girl, which is kind of nice to see. It definitely feels like an indie, but has lots of heart, too. Here's the first official trailer for Adam Leon's Tramps, direct from Netflix's YouTube: In Tramps,...

Stars: Michael C. Hall, Sam Shepard, Don Johnson, Vinessa Shaw, Wyatt Russell, Nick Damici, Lanny Flaherty, Kristin Griffith, Dorothea Swiac, Joe Lanza, Rachel Zeiger-Haag | Written by Jim Mickle, Nick Damici, Joe R. Lansdale | Directed by Jim Mickle
Texan thriller Cold In July, has been hailed as the new No Country for Old Men. The latest film from director Jim Mickle is based on a pulp thriller novel by Joe R Lansdale, who arguably isn’t in the same league as Cormac McCarthy. But can his film adapattion live up to the hype? Having been a big fan of the brilliant albeit trashy series, Dexter, I was keen to see how Michael C. Hall adapted to the big screen.
The film sets off at a rapid pace, with foundations quickly set for an intriguing puzzle. Our protagonist Richard Dane (along with his dodgy Texan accent), is woken up by a curious noise in his downstairs kitchen.

In the middle of the night, a sound alerts a young couple that an intruder has entered their home. Husband, father and picture frame salesman Richard (Michael C. Hall) confronts the burglar and, out of terror more than anything else, shoots him dead. Shortly afterwards Ben (Sam Shepard), the father of the man Richard shot, makes contact with him and threatens his family. Thus begins a thrillingly tense game of cat and mouse that will, of course, change the lives of all involved.
Except that this only covers the first forty-five minutes or so of the film. The narrative runs off in an unexpected direction and takes a twisty path towards its conclusion...
