A group of producers at Bstv Entertainment, the shingle behind Food Network projects like The Kitchen and Trisha’s Southern Kitchen, is attempting to unionize.
A majority of the collection of 19 workers (whom the guild is calling writer-producers) at the Montclair, New Jersey-based development and production company have signed union cards in an attempt to join the Writers Guild of America East, the union announced Monday. The WGA East is calling on management at the company to voluntarily recognize the group, a means of unionizing that avoids a formal National Labor Relations Board election. Eater was the first to report the news.
The Hollywood Reporter has reached out to Bstv Entertainment for comment.
In a request for voluntary recognition sent to management on Monday, workers cited the success of Food Network’s The Kitchen, as well as alleged labor issues that have emerged on the show, as a motivator to unionize.

Food Network is teaming up with the NFL for a new primetime competition series that celebrates the art of tailgating.
In the six-episode “NFL Tailgate Takedown,” hosts Sunny Anderson and New England Patriots Hall-of-Famer Vince Wilfork will preside over tailgate chefs going head-to-head in one-hour episodes shot on location at an NFL stadium tailgate just before the big game, with each tailgating duo representing one of the two NFL teams competing that day. The chefs will endure three themed cooking rounds that feature “each city’s authentic tailgate dishes” — like New England lobster rolls and Philly cheesesteaks — for an “epic battle of hometown pride.”
The show’s rotating panel of judges, which includes Kelsey Barnard Clark, Eddie Jackson, Ali Khan and Ian Rapoport, will decide who wins the grand prize each week: VIP seats on the 50-yard line at the game they are competing ahead of, and their own “Yum-Bardi Trophy.

Even in the best of years, scoring a ticket to the Super Bowl is difficult and expensive. But in what might be the weirdest, most unprecedented season in the NFL’s 100 years of existence — thanks to Covid-19’s spread necessitating reduced capacities, face masks, and social distancing — it will likely be near impossible and much pricier to score seats this year.
