The Supreme Court has allowed Idaho to enforce its strict abortion ban, which applies to medical emergencies. The decision arrived on Friday as a legal battle over reproductive rights rages on in the state, and is the first time the high court weighed in on Idaho’s abortion ban since the overturning of Roe v. Wade.

The proposed amendment aimed to reduce the salary of the U.S. Assistant Health Secretary Rachel Levine, the first openly transgender person to be confirmed by the U.S. Senate. The amendment, which sought to reduce Levine’s salary, was ultimately dismissed by the Republican members of the House.
House Press Gallery shared on X, “The House rejected @Mtg Amd’t #103 by a vote of 170-254-1 present.”
Earlier this week, Greene announced her amendment on the House floor.

Earlier, Leguizamo told a reporter that he “definitely” would be hitting the campaign trail for Joe Biden in 2024.
Asked about Biden’s outreach to Latino voters, Leguizamo said, “I think he’s doing the right things, which is getting Latin consulatns and talking to Latin experts who tell him how to address us, and make the effort. If you make the effort, we will be there, but you have to make the effort. I think he’s doing all that — him and Kamala Harris as well.”
Previously: The guest list for tonight’s White House State Dinner for Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and partner Jodie Haydon includes a number of names from entertainment and media.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (Hhs), through the Administration for Strategic Preparedness and Response (Aspr), announced that free at-home Covid-19 tests will once again be offered to American households nationwide.
Since January 2022, the website COVIDtest.gov has offered to send free test kits to households across the country. In June, the site stopped in order to conserve test supply, but on September 25 COVIDtest.gov will resume the program, and by request, households can expect to receive up to four free at-home tests.
Since the U.S. Government ended the public health emergency in May, the price of traditional lab Pcr tests has become more expensive and less accessible for many Americans. Covid-19 hospitalizations have increased steadily since July. With over 20,000 hospital admissions as of the week of September 9, the new variants of the virus are more contagious for people who have previously been infected with Covid-19. The Biden...

Jimmy Kimmel was delighted on Thursday’s episode of “Jimmy Kimmel Live” by the surprising news that President Joe Biden has initiated some (long overdue) changes in America’s cannabis policies. And he had a pretty good joke to mark the occasion, referencing one of America’s biggest advocates of cannabis.
In case you missed it, earlier Thursday, President Biden announced that he has pardoned all U.S. citizens and legal residents who have federal convictions for simple possession of marijuana. This could potentially affect at least 6,000 people. He also urged state governors to do the same for people convicted at the state level.
But Biden also announced something even more important: That he has directed Secretary of Health and Human Services, Xavier Becerra and Attorney General Merrick Garland “to initiate the process of reviewing how marijuana is scheduled under federal law.” Currently, cannabis is a schedule I drug, which...

The Biden administration officially declared monkeypox a public health emergency. The announcement was made by Health Secretary Xavier Becerra during a briefing with the Department of Health and Services on Thursday, as The New York Times reports.
“We’re prepared to take our response to the next level in addressing this virus, and we urge every American to take monkeypox seriously,” Becerra said.
The declaration gives federal agencies the ability to direct funds toward developing vaccines and drug treatments, aid in emergency funding, and for the hiring of workers to help with the outbreak.

It used to take three days to get an appointment at the Planned Parenthood in Southern Illinois. Since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, that wait has grown to three weeks. The United States is restoring a policy that grants transgender individuals protection from discrimination in the health care system, the Biden administration announced Monday.
This move will reverse a Trump-era policy that stated “sex” refers to a person’s gender assigned at birth, an attempt to allow discrimination in health care based on gender identity, although Trump’s policy never took effect because it was blocked by the courts before it went into effect.
Biden’s shift in policy will essentially restore Obama-era protections for gay and transgender people in the health care system.

What should have been a triumphal media moment for California Governor Gavin Newsom was scuttled on Wednesday by technical difficulties. Newsom had set his first televised press conference in at least two weeks to announce his much-anticipated pick to replace Xavier Becerra as the state’s attorney general.
The presentation began with a jubilant Newsom extemporizing from the podium, recalling his personal history with the San Francisco venue from which he was speaking and name-checking potentates. The governor, as is his habit, preambled for over 7 minutes, during which time the state YouTube feed glitched and sputtered, drawing angry comments from users on the site.
Finally, as Newsom went into a more proper introduction of his nominee for the post, the stream stopped entirely. You can see the moment below. The event was carried live by at least one local TV station, KRON4, but that outlet also cut away before the presentation was over.

Joe Biden reportedly has selected California’s attorney general Xavier Becerra to lead the Department of Health and Human Services.
The New York Times first reported that Becerra would be selected for the post. He has been attorney general of California since 2017, when he was appointed by then-Gov. The attorneys general of seven states and the District of Columbia have filed a lawsuit seeking to block the merger of Sprint and T-Mobile, alleging that the $26.5 billion deal would harm consumers.
New York Attorney General Letitia James and California Attorney General Xavier Becerra announced the suit Tuesday. Colorado, Connecticut, the District of Columbia, Maryland, Michigan, Mississippi, Virginia and Wisconsin also have joined the complaint, which was filed in Federal District Court in Manhattan.

The combination of the Nos. 3 and 4 telecom companies would create a stronger competitor to AT&T and Verizon. Before consummating the current proposal, the companies had previous efforts fall apart.

Legal challenges to President Trump’s national emergency declaration are starting to pile up. Days after multiple advocacy groups filed lawsuits challenging the president’s “national emergency,” 16 states have sued the Trump administration over the president’s scheme to use executive privilege to build a border wall without the approval of Congress. The suit was orchestrated by California, and filed in the U.S. District Court for the North District of the state.

Former Georgia gubernatorial candidate, Stacey Abrams, delivered a blistering attack on President Donald Trump Tuesday night in the Democratic response to the president’s second State of the Union address.
During her speech, Abrams talked about family values, farmers caught in a trade war, racism, immigration and the longest government shutdown in history.
“The shutdown was a stunt engineered by the president of the United States,” she said.
Abrams also bashed Trump for the statement in his speech minutes earlier, when he vowed to get his border wall built.
“This administration chooses to cage children and keep families apart,” Abrams said. “America is made stronger by the presence of immigrants, not walls.”
Abrams went on to voice support for the Lgbtq community, and said the country must “call racism what it is, wrong.”
She concluded by saying she doesn’t want Trump to fail, “but we need him to tell the truth.

Updated to include details of the Justice Department’s suit: California Gov. Jerry Brown today signed a measure that restores Obama-era open-Internet rules in the state, in a direct rebuke to the Trump Administration’s rollback of these regulations. The Justice Department responded with a lawsuit seeking to prevent the law from taking effect.
The California legislature approved a bill that is regarded as having the strongest net-neutrality provisions in the nation. The legislation forbids Internet providers from blocking legal websites, intentionally slowing down Internet traffic or demanding fees for faster service.
The Democratic governor, in signing the measure into law, sets California on a collision course with the FCC, which earlier this year dismantled the landmark net-neutrality rules that ensured equal access to the Internet.
It didn’t take long for the Trump Administration to respond to a direct challenge to its regulatory authority. The Justice Department filed suit...

Washington — The Department of Education, led by Republican über-donor and grizzly-bear alarmist Betsy DeVos, has unveiled a new proposal that would make it dramatically harder for tens of thousands of students who attended scammy for-profit colleges to receive debt relief.
On Wednesday morning, the department released its plan to weaken the so-called “borrower defense” rule. Borrower defense was enacted in the waning days of the Obama administration as a way for students to seek help if they had taken on debt to attend a college or university — typically a for-profit...

Congressional candidate Alejandra Campoverdi is taking President Trump‘s plan to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act very personally.
The 37-year-old former White House aide to President Obama publicly revealed last week that she has a genetic mutation called BRCA2, which means she has an 85-percent likelihood of developing breast cancer.
The disease claimed the lives of her grandmother and great-grandmother and almost took her mother’s, and now Campoverdi is making her BRCA2 diagnosis — and her decision to have a preventative double mastectomy in two years — the centerpiece of her campaign to fill Xavier Becerra’s vacant congressional...
