“Surreal. I mean, truly,” Anderson said.
James added, “Surreal, unreal. We can’t believe that this little idea that we had in our heads two-and-a-half years ago has now come to fruition and we’re all here celebrating Black excellence. So we’re incredibly pleased.”

The Montreal International Black Film Festival will close its 7th edition with I Am Slave, based on the life of Mende Nazer, a 21st century slave.
“We’re proud to close the festival with such an intense film and have its director Gabriel Range with us, here in Montreal”, declared Mibff programming director Émile Castonguay.
I Am Slave, official selection of the 2010 Tiff, is the latest film of Gabriel Range, who directed Death of a President. It was written by Jeremy Brock, who also wrote The Last King of Scotland, for which Forest Whitaker won an Oscar for Best Actor. Gabriel Range wanted to depict Mende Nazer’s dramatic life, “This woman demonstrated exemplary courage. She’s an inspiration to us all. I hope this film will raise awareness and start a debate to stop slavery.”

Raised in a Muslim family, Souleymane Cissé was a passionate cinephile from childhood and attended secondary school in Dakar, before returning to Mali in 1960 after national independence. His film career began as an assistant projectionist for a documentary on the arrest of Patrice Lumumba and in 1970 he returned to Mali once more, and joined the Ministry of Information as a cameraman, where he produced documentaries and short films. In 1972, he produced his first medium-length film, Cinq jours d’une vie and two years later he completed his first full-length film in the Bambara language, Den muso, the story of a young mute girl who had been raped, becomes pregnant, and is rejected both by her family and by the child’s father. Sadly Den Muso was banned by the Malian Minister of Culture, and Cissé was arrested and jailed for having accepted French funding.

While French Quebecker mainstream films - which are mostly shot in Montreal, mind you - keep pretending that ethnic minorities don't exist, it's a blessing that our independent films take the time to look at them. As a matter of fact, the teaser of Bastien Jephté's first film, Sortie 67, is already online.
