The 2020 British Independent Film Awards nominations were revealed Wednesday morning by British actors Holliday Grainger (“The Borgias”) and Micheal Ward (“Lovers Rock”). Leading the list of nominees this year is Rose Glass’ horror movie “Saint Maud” with an impressive 17 nominations. A24 has U.S. distribution rights, but canceled a spring 2020 release due to the pandemic. While the film managed to open in the UK, it has yet to grace stateside screens outside of film festivals.
Another horror movie, Remi Weekes’ refugee nightmare story “His House,” trails close behind with 16 nominations. That film is available to stream on Netflix. With 15 nominations is Sarah Gavron’s teen tale “Rocks.” “Calm with Horses,” titled in the U.S. as “The Shadow of Violence,” has 10 nominations, while “Mogul Mowgli” starring Riz Ahmed has seven. Neil Stryker and the Tyrant of Time is a brilliant title. It also seems to be the least popular title for the film given its being released in the UK (in August) as Guardian of the Universe; a very generic title that has little, or nothing to do with the plot of the film, possibly designed to be confused for more popular, competently made films.
It seems to be a follow up, of sorts to the 2003 film Evil Cult – both of which are directed by Rob Taylor, who also stars as our eponymous hero – but I must admit the 2003 offering somehow passed me by back in my heady days as a student in Bristol.

The story of Scottish mountaineer, Hamish MacInnes, is one that goes beyond his accomplishments as a climber.
In his career he led the first British ascent of the Bonatti Pillar of the Dru in the French Alps as well as took part in four expeditions to Mount Everest amongst other unbelievable feats.
He is an author, photographer as well as an expeditionary filmmaker and an iconic figure responsible for some of the greatest ingenuity that’s impact on mountain climbing today cannot be overstated.
Beyond this, though, is the story of his personal struggles with mental health. Director, Robbie Fraser, documents this and more in Final Ascent which is showing at a sold out screening this year’s Glasgow Film Festival.
We got the chance to sit down with Robbie and delve into how he became involved in the project, the lasting impression Hamish has had on him, and much more.
