“Survivor 45” made history once again last week as Kaleb Gebrewold successfully played his Shot in the Dark to a unanimous vote against him, breaking the record with 11 votes cast for him, two more than when Kelley Wentworth back in “Survivor: Second Chance” played an immunity idol negating nine votes against her. Let’s break down what events transpired that led up to this groundbreaking moment as the tribes converged to one beach.
After the ouster of Brando Meyer in the last episode, Kendra McQuarrie was on the warpath and wanted revenge on Emily Flippen for lying to her, and siding with the Reba duo of Austin Li Coon and Drew Basile. The next day, right before the boats arrived to pick the tribes up to unite with everyone, Bruce Perreault was able to find the new Lulu idol underneath the shelter and shared it with the whole tribe, minus Katurah Topps.

Since the creation of the Shot in the Dark twist at the start of the “new era” that began with “Survivor 41,” several castaways have tried using the one-in-six advantage to save their ailing games, but no one ever had luck on their side. Until now. Warning: this article contains spoilers from “Survivor 45,” Episode 6, so read at your own risk!
After the remaining 13 players attended a group tribal council in the pre-merge phase of the game, Kaleb Gebrewold knew he was in danger. He tried pegging J. Maya Krishnan-Jha as a bigger threat, but it didn’t seem to work. One by one, each player went to the cast their votes and all of them wrote down Kaleb’s name. Kaleb, having been warned by Emily Flippen that his game was hanging from a thread, didn’t vote and instead opted to play his Shot in the Dark.

Thank the Survivor Gods above: Season 45’s big merge episode is (still) hourglass-free. That, my friends, I am happy to report. But just because the franchise’s most nonsensical twist remained dormant doesn’t mean that Tribal Council was immune from a healthy dose of chaos.
And boy, were there fireworks! It may not have been the first time a player won safety from a Shot in the Dark (that honor goes to last season’s Jaime Lynn Ruiz), but it was the first time that a Shot in the Dark flipped the vote entirely upside down. After the tribes merged,...

Hey,"Survivor" fans. Tonight, May 24, 2023, the big finale episode of Survivor's current season 44 did indeed hit the air, and we finally found out who won this thing at the end. Tonight's finale episode kicked off with footage of Carolyn talking to the private cams about how Heidi played her immunity idol at the last tribal council that sent Jaime Lynn Ruiz packing and off to the jury. Heidi told the private cams, "I didn't want to go home with an idol in my pocket. So, I'm glad I played it." At this point, everyone went searching for another hidden immunity idol. Laura told the private cams, "Carson is going to beat us." She also campaigned that to everyone. Carolyn totally agreed with Laura and echoed those same thoughts about Carson to the private cams.

On Wednesday’s 12th episode of “Survivor 44,” the Tika three stuck together and gained a new ally in Heidi Lagares-Greenblatt. This is a huge accomplishment,” she stated after leaving the game. Read on for Jaime’s “Survivor 44” exit interview from the end of the episode.
But Jaime’s confessional soon turned uncomfortably awkward, as she once again brought up her fake immunity idol that she believed to be real. “Finding an idol, that was one of my number-one goals and I’m so grateful,” she declared. “I am proud of myself for overcoming so many fears. One contestant who hasn’t gotten her fair share of screen time so far during “Survivor 44” is Lauren Harpe. But in a newly released sneak peek video, the 31-year-old educator from Texas delivers a confessional that’s all about her innermost feelings on quirky castaway Carolyn Wiger. Above, watch the clip before the 12th episode, “I’m the Bandit,” airs Wednesday, May 17 on CBS.
In the promo video, Lauren and Carolyn are searching for a hidden immunity idol in the jungle after Carolyn played hers for Carson Garrett at the prior tribal council. “We saw something at the top of this tree over here,” Lauren informs Carolyn. However, a suspicious Carolyn then wonders aloud, “Are you luring me? Is there a trap?”

On Wednesday’s 11th episode of “Survivor 44,” Danny Massa cut the mission to find out who cast a vote against him short, believing it to have been a member of Tika. That belief led him down a path to targeting Yamil “Yam Yam” Arocho for the vote, but Yam Yam brought together the former Ratu members to oust Danny instead. Read on for his “Survivor 44” exit interview from the end of the episode.
For Danny, the vote should have been simple. With two Soka, two Ratu and three Tika in the game, the four non-Tika were supposed to align together to take out Yam Yam or Carson Garrett. Everyone was on board to take out Yam Yam, until he won his first immunity challenge and had safety. When the vote turned to Carson, the plan was still on, but Jaime Lynn Ruiz and Lauren Harpe were swayed by Tika to take out Danny instead.

CBS has released a “Survivor 44” deleted scene that takes place on Day 18 at the Va Va camp, and it’s a doozy. We then get quick-cuts of Danny searching for advantages in the jungle as he tearfully narrates, “The lack of food? It sucks. Really not fair. I feel like I could have been over there instead of … looking for this idol, dawg!” The 32-year-old New York firefighter bursts out laughing as he holds up the red triangular amulet, confirming his tears weren’t real.

CBS has released a “Survivor 44” sneak peek video for the Wednesday, May 3 episode, titled “Full Tilt Boogie,” and fans of Carson Garrett should get a kick out of it (watch above). The self-prescribed “space nerd” returns to camp after voting out Kane Fritzler, and he immediately starts spinning a web of lies to Kane’s former ally Jaime Lynn Ruiz about her fake idol (which she thought was real). Remember, Jaime gave it to Kane for safe keeping in case someone had a Knowledge Is Power advantage, and he ended up leaving with it in his sock.
“I focus my game upon relationships,” Carson tells the camera in a private confessional. “And so it’s really important for me to focus on damage control.” Carson then whispers to Jaime in the jungle that he always “wanted to work” with Kane, but that he couldn’t after Kane spilled the beans...

Jaime had secretly given Kane her fake idol (which she believed to be real) earlier in the day, in order to prevent someone from stealing it thanks to a potential Knowledge Is Power advantage. For the record, no such advantage has appeared yet in Season 44.
We know what you’re thinking: once Jeff Probst started reading Kane’s name aloud in vote after vote, why didn’t Kane pass Jaime’s fake idol back to her? Well, simply put, it’s not allowed. Last year, Probst addressed this exact rule with Entertainment Weekly when a similar scenario happened during “Survivor 43.”

As of this writing, only nine players still remain on CBS’s reality TV show. Amazingly, they are evenly divided along original tribal lines. Yamil “Yam Yam” Arocho, Carson Garrett and Carolyn Wiger hail from Tika, Kane Fritzler, Lauren Harpe and Jaime Lynn Ruiz represent Ratu, and Heidi Lagares-Greenblatt, Frannie Marin and Danny Massa come from Soka.

After Danny Massa used his hidden immunity idol last week to save Frannie Marin, the castaways now suspect there’s “another idol in circulation,” which is typically what happens on the CBS reality TV show. In the “Survivor 44” sneak peek video for Episode 9 (watch above), Kane Fritzler, Jaime Lynn Ruiz and Danny are seen searching the jungle for an idol shortly after Brandon Cottom was voted out of the game.
The clip begins on Day 16 at the Va Va camp. “The number one mantra in this game is don’t get cocky,” Kane tells Jaime. “I felt comfortable last night, and I was like, ‘It’s okay to feel comfortable. I’m in the majority alliance’ … I got duped.” To recap, the former Ratu members were completely blindsided by Danny playing his idol, which negated the six votes cast for Frannie, resulting in Brandon’s elimination.

In the latest episode of Jeff Probst‘s “On Fire with Jeff Probst” podcast, the long-time “Survivor” host confesses that the CBS reality TV show is purposefully designed to be “seen through the eyes of kids.” The conversation came at the end of the podcast when a fan accused him of making the show only for himself.
“I don’t think he’s wrong in that yes, on some level, I am making ‘Survivor’ for me,” Probst readily admitted, as reported by Dalton Ross (EW). He then added, “But I will say that my version of the show, for me, is seen through the eyes of kids. So that is my point of view.”

Probst later added, “Everybody knows that works with me, I say, ‘Imagine a 7-year-old at home imagining they’re the one making fire, they’re the one who found an idol.

On Wednesday’s eighth episode of “Survivor 44,” Brandon Cottom was blindsided by the successful use of the Soka birdcage idol. Going into the vote, Brandon felt like the Ratu four were running the game and that he could assemble a unanimous vote against Frannie Marin, but his buddy Danny Massa had other plans. Read on for Brandon’s “Survivor 44” exit interview from the end of the episode.
After Brandon, Jaime Lynn Ruiz and Lauren Harpe secured the elimination of Matt Blankinship, the non-Ratu players realized there was a clear divide in the game between Ratu and Soka fighting for power. That left Yamil “Yam Yam” Arocho, Carolyn Wiger and Carson Garrett in the middle as “the three stooges” of Tika who could play the middle between the two sides. Having saved Yam Yam in the previous vote, Brandon believed that he’d work with Ratu against Soka and that Carolyn would follow suit.

She started out as a bit of wildcard, having trouble connecting to her fellow Tika tribe members. The only person she felt close with was Bruce Perreault, but then he was medically evacuated due to a head injury. As the game heads in to what should be the first straight-forward merge vote of “Survivor 44,” where we hope all Top 10 players left have a say in who goes home next, the game seems to have split unevenly down original tribal lines. Brandon Cottom, Jaime Lynn Ruiz and Lauren Harpe took the upper hand in episode 7 to cut down the Soka numbers by one, but have curiously left Kane Fritzler on the outside looking in. Soka members Danny Massa, Heidi Lagares-Greenblat and Frannie Marin are now in defense mode, while Tika contestants Carson Garrett, Carolyn Wiger and Yamil “Yam Yam” Arocho are still trying to find out how they fit in to the plans.

Properly using an advantage is the ultimate “Survivor” dilemma. How many castaways have left the game with idols or advantages in their pockets, unused because they kept waiting for the “right time” that eventually passed them by? In the case of Heidi Lagares-Greenblatt, her “Control a Vote” advantage (which allowed her to dictate how another person would vote at tribal council) had an expiration date so there was no question of when to use it. But viewers saw her agonizing over who to use it on. And ultimately, they think she wasted it by targeting the wrong person.
In Gold Derby’s recent poll, only 9% of respondents thought Heidi did the right thing by instructing Lauren Harpe to vote for Yamil “Yam Yam” Arocho. That means 91% of “Survivor” fans had mixed feelings on how Heidi’s advantage played out. Of course, we’re all playing armchair quarterback as we have...

In CBS’s latest “Survivor 44” deleted scene, viewers learn more about Matt Blankinship‘s unsuccessful mad scramble to save himself from elimination in Episode 7. Prior to tribal council, Matt goes to Jaime Lynn Ruiz and basically throws Danny Massa under the bus for duping him into believing he’d found a hidden immunity idol, when really it was a fake one planted by Danny, who had the real one. Jaime’s response? She calls Matt a “liar liar, pants on fire.” Watch the video above.
The scene begins at the old Soka camp on Day 14, with Matt showing Jaime, Yamil “Yam Yam” Arocho, Lauren Harpe and Brandon Cottom his former home. Remember, this small group lost the immunity challenge, so only they would be eligible to be voted out at the impending tribal council.

Shortly after “Survivor 44” shook up the merged tribe and sent home Matt Blankinship in a tearful tribal council, CBS released a deleted scene from Episode 7 showcasing an overwhelmed Kane Fritzler. On Day 14, just prior to the immunity challenge, the 25-year-old law graduate (and “Dungeons & Dragons” enthusiast) from Canada says he now has some “skin in the game” because he received a vote at the prior tribal council.
To recap, Kane’s name was written down by Carolyn Wiger in a 1-3-7 vote over Yamil “Yam Yam” Arocho and Josh Wilder (who went home). “It was a little spicy,” Kane told the camera about seeing Jeff Probst holding a parchment with his name. “It tells me that I’m playing, I’m not hidden anymore.”

April 5 was the big “merge episode” of “Survivor 44,” when the three tribes came together to live on the same beach. Prior to the merge, the camera showed us how the Soka tribe reacted to the news, and Danny Massa readily admitted he was “a little emotional” to say goodbye to the beach he’d lived on for 12 days. We’ve survived the “mergatory,” Survivor fans. Now, the 11 lucky remaining castaways have officially made it to the merge, where the game will only get more challenging. So which player best set themselves up to succeed in Survivor 44 Episode 6? Read on for who we believe is the Survivor 44 castaway of the week.

At the beginning of Survivor 44 Episode 6, Tika, Soka, and Ratu learned they would soon live on one beach. Tree mail told them to drop their tribe buffs, but they would have to wait to receive the merge buffs. And unfortunately, one contestant would never get to wear the black bandana.
After the 12 castaways got acquainted at their new camp (and Josh celebrated getting away from Yam Yam and Carolyn), it was time for the Immunity Challenge.

On Wednesday’s sixth episode of “Survivor 44,” Josh Wilder thought that the pre-merge joining of the tribes would be a fresh opportunity for him to reset what he saw as a strong position in the game. Originally on Soka and with two (albeit strained) connections at Tika, Josh would have enough relationships in the game to secure a safe path forward. His own spreading of disinformation about the real and/or fake idols in his possession ultimately sealed his fate and the new tribe united to vote him out. Read on for his “Survivor 44” exit interview from the end of the episode.
As soon as he hit the sands of the Ratu beach where the new pre-merge tribe would be playing from, Josh began his campaign to solidify his position in the game. As he tried at Tika, Josh thought the threat of him having an idol would scare votes away from him,...

Some Survivor fans like reading into the edit of the episodes to see what producers are trying to hide or tell fans. Season 44 heavily shows Carolyn Wiger’s point of view and breaks the format multiple times. Here is a theory on why they went a different route.

Season 44 had a unique start, with a blooper of Carolyn doing a confessional. It certainly threw off the audience, and at the time, it was unclear what the editors were trying to say about the season. But after six episodes, the producers’ vision seems more apparent.
The following episodes returned to the show’s format of picking up with a tribe returning to camp from the Tribal Council. Two of which were Tika with Carolyn.

Heading into the sixth episode of “Survivor 44,” the Tika tribe had just been told by host Jeff Probst that they wouldn’t have to attend tribal council because Matthew Grinstead-Mayle had left the show due to his bum shoulder. That left 12 people still in the game, and they were all about to compete to “earn their way” into the all-important merge. So how did it all play out on Wednesday night?

It’s the episode of Survivor 44 we’ve all been dreading — the “mergatory.” That’s right; Survivor producers are sticking with the “new era” “earn the merge” concept in season 44, meaning that Tika, Soka, and Ratu are now living on one beach, but they aren’t technically merged. We’ll get further into this concept in our recap, but let’s just hope that the Survivor 44 cast somehow makes this awful twist somewhat bearable in episode 6.

CBS has released yet another deleted scene from “Survivor 44” Episode 5, this time focusing on Josh Wilder. The 34-year-old surgeon from Atlanta started out the game on the Soka tribe, where he was sitting between two dominant pairs. Then he switched over to Tika, where he became a target between the sometimes-friendly, sometimes-warring Yamil “Yam Yam” Arocho and Carolyn Wiger.
On Day 11, Josh gives some insights into his thinking process after the tribe receives tree-mail about the impending immunity challenge (watch above). Yam Yam reads the parchment aloud: “Nothing comes between friends as annoying as a piece of rope. If you are the one dragged to the end, a gentle touch is your only hope.”

It’s “merge” time for the “Survivor” contestants as the “Next Time On” promo confirmed that all the tribes will coalesce on the same beach. Last week’s fifth episode saw the leave of Matthew Grinstead-Mayle from Ratu after sustaining an injury to his shoulder in the premiere when he fell off of a large rock. This is the second player this season to exit the game due to an injury, and though he technically was not involuntarily medically evacuated like Bruce Perrault was in the premiere, the pain was too excruciating for him to continue forward. Due to Matthew’s departure, the Tika tribe did not have to attend Tribal Council after losing the immunity challenge, but how will the rest of the cast look together when they unite on one beach? Read on as we’re breaking down the game.
