Former MTV president Van Toffler had the history books on his mind when he asked Madonna to open the 2003 Video Music Awards. Toffler wanted to honor the VMAs’ nearly two-decade legacy with a callback to its inaugural 1984 edition. A lot had happened since Madonna rolled around in a wedding dress during “Like a Virgin” at that first awards show, but she remained the video era’s flagship star. Toffler hoped a plum spot on the program would motivate the Queen of Pop to outdo herself.

On Monday morning last week, everything was business as usual at All Def Digital. By the end of the day, the media company had rounded up its employees and fired almost every single one of them.
The rap- and comedy-focused brand, which Def Jam Recordings co-founder Russell Simmons set up in 2013, had been spinning its wheels since Simmons’ exit from the company last year due to sexual assault allegations, suffering from rampant mismanagement and a toxic work culture, six former employees tell Rolling Stone. Spotify’s Chief Marketing Officer Seth Farbman is leaving at the end of the month, in a departure that the music streaming service said was part of a broader realignment of its marketing efforts, the company said in a regulatory filing.
Farbman joined the company three and a half years ago as part of an effort to raise the company’s profile in preparation for an initial stock offering, though not everyone in the company was a fan of his work.
“He’s played a pivotal role in establishing our brand around the globe and building the remarkable team that will carry us into the future,” Spotify CEO Daniel Ek said in a statement.
Farbman’s departure is the latest in a number of executive exits over the past year, as the company evolved from scrappy startup to publicly traded entity with a $32.7 billion market valuation.

A longtime online video exec is now steering Spotify's video strategy, and with one of his first moves, he is going back to the drawing board. According to Bloomberg, the streaming service is canceling all of its current original series as it looks to piece together a new approach under new video boss Courtney Holt.
Spotify had recently launched a number of video programs as part of its efforts to expand beyond the music business that makes up its bread and butter. Most of the series it picked up with music-related. A partnership with Russell Simmons' All Def Digital, for example, produced Traffic Jams, which resembled James Corden's iconic Carpool Karaoke bit.
The consensus, especially after the departure of former Head of Video Tom Calderone, has been that those shows were poorly promoted, plagued by discoverability issues, and not nearly memorable enough to stand out in the crowded streaming landscape.

Former top Maker Studios executive Courtney Holt -- who most recently served as Evp of media and strategy at Disney after the company folded Maker into its Consumer Products And Interactive Media (Dcpi) arm last December -- is now set to lead original video and podcast programming at Spotify.
The move comes just days after Spotify confirmed the exit of video head Tom Calderone. Under Calderone’s tenure, Spotify rolled out a slate of music-themed original shows -- including the Carpool Karaoke-adjacent Traffic Jams and Trading Playlists, in which two athletes shared their favorite songs across disparate genres. Calderone also helped Spotify broaden its podcasting efforts.

In March 2016, Spotify announced the hire of Tom Calderone, who came to the music streaming service from VH1. As Spotify's Head of Video, Calderone worked with his team to build a library of original programming, which began to premiere in 2016.
Now, Calderone is on his way out. As first reported by Bloomberg, the executive has departed his post, which could signal a change in Spotify's video plans.
During Calderone's tenure, Spotify rolled out several programs for its Premium subscribers, including one produced by the team at All Def Digital, while also expanding its collection of podcasts. In general, though, the platform's originals have struggled to generate significant mainstream recognition. A June report in Business Insider dubbed Spotify Studios as "a video business you've never heard of."
In its statement regarding Calderone's departure, Spotify seemed to indicate that it would immediately place more focus on the music business that continues to be its bread-and-butter.

Spotify, as you may have heard, is eager to get into the original programming game with its own slate of exclusive shows. One of those shows is set to arrive, and it will offer a fresh spin on a format that has made huge gains on the Internet. It’s called Traffic Jams, it comes from Russell Simmons’ online network All Def Digital, and it asks producer-and-performer pairings to make music in the back of an SUV.
Each Traffic Jams episode will feature its own pair of guests, with famous artists like T-Pain, E-40, and Joey Bada$$ slated to participate. Comedian DoBoy, who starred in a popular Drake parody video on the All Def Digital YouTube channel, will serve as the host.
“Our audience loves hip hop and with Traffic Jams we want to give them a deeper understanding of the artists and the creative process behind the music,” said Tom Calderone,...

VH1 is the new home of the Critics' Choice Awards.
The network said Monday that it has inked an exclusive three-year deal with the Broadcast Film Critics Assn. to broadcast the awards show starting with the 13th annual edition, airing live Jan. 7 from the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium.
The Critics' Choice Awards, founded in 1995, annually honors achievements in filmmaking and is touted as the first major awards show of the season. The BFCA claims that it consistently picks nominees and winners that go on to garner more Oscar nominations and wins than any other of the movie awards shows, last year picking 30 of the 35 nominees and six of the Oscar winners in the top seven categories, including best picture, acting, directing and writing. The show also is attended by a range of high-profile talent.
VH1 executive vp and GM Tom Calderone said the network approached the BFCA knowing that the broadcast rights were available.
