Archival Quality, a ghostly graphic novel from Oni Press that incorporates a compassionate and evocative portrayal of mental health issues in its tale of spectral mystery, has been named winner of the 5th Annual Dwayne McDuffie Award for Diversity in Comics. The award is shared by the book’s creative team, writer Ivy Noelle Weir and illustrator Christina “Steenz” Stewart.
The finalists this year represented an impressively eclectic field of nominees with an array of styles, story sensibilities, cultural roots and life experiences. The other nominees were Papa Cherry, written by Saxton Moore and illustrated by Phillip Johnson; The Snagglepuss Chronicles, written by Mark Russell and penciled by Mike Feehan; Victor Lavalle’s Destroyer, written by Victor Lavalle and illustrated by Dietrich Smith; and The Carpet Merchant, by Reimena Yee.

Victor Lavalle’s Destroyer #2 has the makings of a good comic but some of the execution was off-putting and at times even upsetting. Two issues in and it is still unclear who exactly the protagonist of this story is or what fully is at stake. There are individual moments that make it worth your time, but better writing could have tied all those together.
This continues the saga of Frankenstein’s monster as he has found himself in the modern world. He is on a specific mission that he will not wait on no matter who it may impact. Unwavering from his path we find that his feelings towards mankind have become extremely sour. Here he travels through Mexico and becomes this Moses-like prophet leading people throughout the desert. Victor Lavalle does demonstrate how people will place their...

Basing your comic off a classic literary character takes a good amount of gumption. You are taking a character everyone is well aware of and trying to put your own spin in it, but if your spin too far off you can greatly upset hardcore fans but if you are too close to the original you then construct what feels like a carbon copy. So far Victor Lavalle’s Destroyer is one that is able to strike the right balance as he creates his version of Frankenstein’s monster.
Oddly though the character this seemed like more at first was Swamp Thing than Frankenstein or at least a character that holds a high respect and protective sense for nature. The opening we see Frankenstein’s monster sitting on top of an ice thrown in the middle of Antarctica...
