To mark the release of Gazza, out now, we’ve been given 3 copies to give away on DVD.
Paul Gascoigne was the face of ‘90s Britain, the most celebrated young footballer in the world, and a newspaper editor’s dream. His on-field brilliance was matched only by his off-field antics, which the tabloid media ruthlessly exploited for a celebrity-obsessed audience.
Gazza is an unflinching portrait of the ultimate tragic hero, whose love for the riches and limelight of fame proved to be his downfall. An unmissable documentary for any football fan, featuring interviews from friends, family, and former teammates and coaches including Alan Shearer, Bryan Robson, Paul Ince, Ian Wright and Terry Venables.
Gazza was directed by Sampson Collins and was produced by Gareth Dodds, Tom Wood, Vaughan Sivell & Will Kane with Keith Haviland & Mark Stewart credited as Exec Producers.
Please note: This competition is open to UK residents only...

Rating: ★★★
At the heart of Gascoigne is a difficult subject, but an irresistible one: a wayward genius, wounded and definitively vulnerable. In football, it’s also an age-old story thanks to the vortex created at the end of playing careers, when the irreplaceable thrill of adulation makes way for a vacuum that must be filled by something else.
For Gazza, the vacuum was filled with the same kind of self-destruction that made him such a commodity for the media in his playing days. He was never one for restraint: and just as that led to some of his more notorious and controversial moments on the pitch (his catastrophic knee injury, his infamous celebrations…) it also gave rise to some of the most famous stories about the amiable Geordie.
As Gascoigne is pretty quick to establish, not only are most of the wildest and worst things you’ve heard about Gazza true,...

Although Newcastle fans may have got their dream present this Christmas with Alan Pardew’s impending exit from St. James’ Park, a troubling anxiety over what happens next has crept in. “Sack Pardew” may have been the cry for months but few would have been able to tell you who should be in charge instead. The focus was so aggressive on Pardew out that nobody even thought about what the follow-up would be if it actually happened.
Even the bookies don’t quite know what the future holds. The “odds on favourite” has changed frequently and randomly. Frank de Boer, the early favourite, was quickly dismissed as a non-starter when representatives said he wouldn’t leave Ajax this season. Next favourite, Tony Pulis, looks now to be West Brom bound… any chance of Newcastle hiring the former Palace manager ending when Ashley stalled on him (likely...

Despite Craig Bellamy’s assertions that Newcastle are nowhere near the size and profile of Manchester United, the two clubs have some serious history when it comes to close rivalry and some bad blood.
The clubs have butted heads on the pitch several times, playing their part in some of the most entertaining Premier League matches, and though the days the Magpies compete with the big bucks of Van Gaal’s side are gone (as we’re told almost every window), for a while the pair were close business rivals.
The revelation that Alan Shearer turned down Man Utd more than once is nothing new, but he is far from the only Newcastle player who almost ended up playing for the Red Devils at one point in their career…

David moves has been talking to the Telegraph to admit – unsurprisingly – that he’s ready to get back into management should the right job come along. Inevitably, given the fact that the former Everton and Man Utd boss has been topping some polls for who fans want as the next Newcastle boss, the conclusion for some will be that Newcastle is the right job he’s waiting for.
He has said that he would be happy to work abroad, since Britain doesn’t export enough managerial talent to balance all the foreign coaches given top jobs here:
“You look at how well Terry Venables did in Spain and how well Bobby Robson did – they are up there with the great managers and both had periods working in Europe.”
“It’s good that we have good managers like Jose Mourinho and Arsene Wenger in this country but...

Are you simply nuts about football? Then you should be mates with micro-artist Quentin Devine.
Devine has painstakingly carved portraits of five England footy greats into Brazil nuts in time for this summer's 2014 World Cup in Rio. Why? Well, just because he can.
The artist went through over 50 nuts, each measuring 1.5 by 2cm, averaging 96 hours.
David Beckham, Gary Lineker, Wayne Rooney, Paul Gascoigne and Alan Shearer are given their own nutty equivalents. Though, Gary may only be interested in the crisp variety.
The nuts have been made to tie in with Dave's show England's Top 19 Footy Heroes, which kicks off its World Cup coverage tomorrow (May 20) at 9pm.
Devine said: "When Dave asked me to carve the faces of five of England's most loved football legends out of Brazil nuts I knew it would be a challenge. The nuts can be very oily and extremely brittle but I think I...

In 21 combined years as a Premier League club Newcastle have hired ten permanent managers, five different caretakers and two interims. Half-a-dozen of the ten were sacked. Viva stability!
But as with every firing at St James’ Park the rumour mill habitually hits the overdrive button and mindlessly churns out a plethora of names to ostensibly market as the Magpies’ latest leader of men. And we’ve had some humdingers down the years!
Some of rumoured incumbents to the black and white throne were instantly dismissed while others spread a blanket of sorrow over Tyneside upon rejecting the once in a lifetime (or twice if you’re Kevin Keegan) to steer the ship of this bonkers football club.

Sir Alex Ferguson should come out of retirement and replace Tottenham manager Andre Villas-Boas, according to the Lilywhite’s former chairman Lord Sugar.
Speaking to the London Evening Standard, Lord Sugar questioned Villas-Boas tactics and called for Ferguson to perform a sensational U-turn on his retirement plans.
Villas-Boas’ position at Spurs has been placed under the microscope following their humiliating 6-0 hammering by Manchester City in the Premier League, a result which leaves them ninth in the table.
But ‘The Apprentice’ star, now sits in the House of Lords, believe Tottenham’s problems precede that sobering fixture.
He explained to talkSPORT:
“I’ve struggled to understand Avb’s tactics, you wonder how we are going to get a goal.
“Four, five or even six games before [the 6-0 defeat to Manchester City] you couldn’t see where the goals were coming from.
“The formation that Avb plays, I don’t understand at all. I put my hands up,...

Reading’s unceremonious sacking of Brian McDermott on Monday has been met with derision from across the footballing world, as figures from the game, journalists and fans alike bemoan another potentially short-sighted decision to let go of a good manager in an attempt to stave off relegation late in the day. It’s an increasingly common occurrence in the Premier League – but does it ever actually pay off?
The lack of sentiment shown by Reading majority shareholder Anton Zingarevich was apparent. In his time in charge of Reading since the end of 2009, McDermott had taken a struggling Championship side and over-achieved, steadying the ship before taking them back into the top flight, where they have fought a brave battle against relegation despite having the weakest squad in the Premier League. But that wasn’t enough for Zingarevich, though, and the axe fell on McDermott with just nine games remaining this season.

We live in a society where the oldies are taking over. By 2018, older people will outnumber children for the first time. Over the next 30 years the number of over-65s is forecast to almost double, from 506 million in 2008 to 1.3 billion. And if you’ve turned on your TV in the past decade, you’ll have noticed that the ad men having let this fact slip by them.
Magazines, movies and music may still be obsessed with the cult of youth, but increasingly adverts are being aimed at the elderly, and with good reason. As well as creating ads for more products aimed at older customers, advertisers are bucking the youth-oriented trend, and switching the glowing supermodels for wrinkles, and featuring the elderly in their ads.
Usually done with a good dose of humour, it’s had a surprising effect on the way we view old people, challenging the stereotypes, and...

It might have been a sure-thing, as yesterday’s pro-selection article about that Olympic snub stated: David Beckham might have been wanted by people from the Olympic committee down to the fans and he might have been a big player in the recent history of English football, but he shouldn’t ever have been included as a playing member of the Olympic Gb Team.
Ignoring for now the inane accusations that Stuart Pearce cut David Beckham after initially including him on the short-list as some kind of publicity stunt to “make a name for himself,” or that Beckham should be included as a member of the playing squad to represent Britain simply because of his effect on the gates is absurd, there are a number of reasons that make his snub a wholly justified one.
And when that second argument is backed up by assertions that his snub somehow suggests...

Former Tottenham Hotspur player Darren Anderton has revealed that Lord Alan Sugar "didn't have a clue about football" during his tenure at the club. Sugar took control of the London football team in 1991, along with manager Terry Venables, and spent 16 years in the boardroom at White Hart Lane. According to The Sun, Anderton, who joined the club in 1992, said that while Sugar's business skills were obvious, the Apprentice magnate was less skilled in terms of the sport. Anderton wrote in his memoirs: (more)...
