The Amazing Race 17's fifth-place team, Chad Waltrip and Stephanie Smith, got engaged on the race and are now three months pregnant with their first child. Meanwhile, Chad says "people are right" about their criticism of his frequently awful behavior. They got married this weekend, coincidentally (or not), and Stephanie told TV Guide, "I just found out that I'm three months pregnant!" This season taped in June, which means the baby was conceived post-race and...

On last night’s episode of The Amazing Race, “There’s a Lot of Nuts and Bullets,” we were introduced to a new twist on the U-Turn: the Double U-Turn. I wasn’t sure what to anticipate when I first heard about the idea, but after watching the episode I’m confident the change to the U-Turn was a good one.
Previously, if one of the trailing teams was U-Turned, that was the end of their race. Ok, so some teams have been U-Turned and not eliminated in the past. However, if only one team was U-Turned last night, that team would have been eliminated. The teams were too tight and they were too few teams for anyone to make up for having to do both ends of the Roadblock. In the case of last night, Brook and Claire would have been sent home.
Fortunately for Brook and Claire lovers...

The Amazing Race has its final four, including two female teams, after a super-intense episode. That dick Chad and his now-fiancee Stephanie were eliminated, thankfully, having gotten lost and falling behind. I will not miss them, not Chad's abusiveness, nor his stupidity ("How's that PhD helping you?" he mocked Nat, and she pointed out later that as a doctor, she has an MD; later, he said, "touche to them," an apparent make-nice concession toward the...

Chad & Stephanie have become the latest team to be eliminated from The Amazing Race. The couple, who became engaged in Oman on last week's episode, had started this week's leg in first place but finished bottom at the pitstop in Bangladesh following a chain of events including a flight to the country evening out the running order and being forced to complete a second detour after being U-Turned by Nat & Kat. This week's leg opened with the teams trying to get to Dhaka, Bangladesh from Oman. They were also pre-warned that they would face a double U-Turn (for the first time in Amazing Race history) at some stage during the leg which stepped up everyone's desire to get to Bangladesh first. Chad & Stephanie were the first to depart and decided that they would U-Turn Nat & Kat if they had the chance. Jill & Thomas were next, followed (more)...

On 'The Amazing Race' (Sun., 8Pm Et on CBS), Team Kat/Nat were neck-and-neck with Chad and Stephanie. Nat and Kat reached the U-turn first and naturally chose their direct competitors to do the U-turn, forcing Chad and Stephanie to go back and complete the other Detour task. Once they'd carried 100 bricks in a basket on their heads to a shop owner, the couple -- who became engaged in Oman in last week's episode -- were the last team to arrive at the pit stop in Bangladesh. Their amazing race was over.
"Even though we didn't win the million, I still feel like a very, very rich man. I really did get the greatest prize of all," said Chad. "I'm getting to come out of this engaged to a wonderful, wonderful woman." And don't forget about that free trip honeymoon to Belize.

Here is Sean Furfaro 's recap of The Amazing Race, Episode 8.
When I saw last week’s preview of the Double U-Turn coming up in this episode, I braced myself for the invariable whining and complaining from the team that gets U-Turned. As readers of my Amazing Race Recaps from previous seasons may remember, I am a big proponent of using the tools that are available to you to win the game. It’s the same concept as a stolen base in baseball…it’s not unethical or ‘dirty’ to do it, even though the name ‘stolen base’ itself is a connotation of wrongdoing.
In previous seasons, we’ve seen teams get riled up over being U-Turned, but if you’re not willing to use the U-Turn with only 5 teams left in the Race, then you don’t really want to win. As I stated last season when Brent and Caite U-Turned Carol and Brandi,...

Our remaining teams start out flying to Dhaka, Bangladesh. Phil tells us it is the most densely populated city in the world so, naturally, their first clue will be within a big crowded market. Hot, sweaty, fun. In the Sundarban Square Supermarket, they must use a sugar cane press to press out some sugar cane juice for one team member to drink. I wonder what it tastes like? Probably not as good as I think it might.
So, The Amazing Race is debuting the Double U-Turn tonight and Chad and Stephanie want to use it on Nat and Kat (who are starting out last, by the way). Do Stephanie, Vicki, and Jill have some sort of oppressed hairdressers' alliance? It must be working, all three hairdressers are still in the game! Oh, it's because Chad doesn't want to lose to girls.

On this week’s episode of ‘The Amazing Race’, teams departed Russia for the Middle East and raced one of the longest stages in the show’s history.
“The leg was over 16 hours and that’s not even counting the flight,” Mallory, 25 told us exclusively.
As teams got their clues and headed off to make their travel arrangements to Oman, the newly dating Chad and Stephanie were accidentally sound asleep in their hotel room, clueless they had missed their “Pit Start” time. The lovebirds started a full two hours late but got a lucky break when they caught a flight just ten minutes behind the other teams.
“That’s the only leg of the race where they could have gotten away with that,” says Mallory.
Once the teams arrived in Oman, they were almost neck-and-neck but had to wait their turn to climb up a tower to fetch their next clue.

Sometimes truth is stranger than fiction.
Or, as I like to say, if the story was a movie, no one would believe it because it’s so improbable.
Isn’t that kind of the case with Chad and Stephanie getting engaged and winning the eighth leg of The Amazing Race on the same day? If The Amazing Race was not a reality television show, we would roll our eyes and waive our hands because it was a lame ending. But, this is reality television and despite some deserved skepticism about how “reality” these shows are sometimes, we’re constantly reassured that nothing is manufactured.
Certainly the moment wasn’t manufactured. There’s almost no way for the producers to get Jill and Thomas to illegally pay a cab to let them follow it to the Pit Stop. However, I’m a bit skeptical about how the editing process went to...

Gary & Mallory have become the latest team to be eliminated from The Amazing Race. The father-and-daughter duo finished bottom at the pitstop in Oman on Sunday night after struggling with directions en route to the first challenge and never managing to make up the time. Nevertheless, the pair said they were "proud" to have shared the experience and enjoyed their time together. The episode had opened as the teams were told to fly more than 4,000 miles from St. Petersburg to Muscat, Oman and find a man who was holding tokens. They immediately headed to a nearby ticket office where Nat & Kat and Brook & Claire nabbed seats on the first flight to Oman, while Gary & Mallory, Jill & Thomas and Nick & Vicki booked a flight that landed two hours later. Chad & Stephanie were missing at this point having missed their pitstart time because they had slept (more)...

Chad decided about a month ago that girlfriend Stephanie was "the one." With a ring he'd been carrying across the world in 'The Amazing Race' (Sun., 8Pm Et on CBS) competition, Chad popped the question in Oman.
"You've come into my life and done so many amazing things and taught me so much. I couldn't see spending my life with anybody else other than you," Chad told her. He knelt down, asked Stephanie to marry him, and she gave a hearty, "I will!"
But that wasn't all their good news. The couple later nabbed first place at the Al Alam Palace pit stop and won a trip to Belize -- honeymoon destination solved!

With its perplexingly absent Speed Bump and its Leg-determining litany of penalties, last week's episode of "The Amazing Race" left more than a few viewers scratching their heads in confusion or annoyance. Sunday (Nov. 14) night's "Amazing Race" may also have perplexed a few fans. This week's "The Amazing Race" was preempted so that CBS could bring you "Extreme Relationship Makeover: Chad & Stephanie" edition or, perhaps, the Hallmark Original Movie "The Most Wonderful Day of Stephanie's Life." Click through for a full recap of Sunday's vaguely romantic, but not even slightly suspenseful, "Amazing Race"... The "Amazing...

Here is Sean Furfaro's recap of The Amazing Race, Episode 8.
Last week I pointed out that Nick and Vicki were not forced to do a Speed Bump. One of the commenters here explained that the reason this happened is because the previous week, in the Piano Detour, apparently they gave the correct answer but were told it was wrong. So they ended up being last, even though they should have arrived at the mat much earlier.
While I understand the logic, I think that it was inexcusable that CBS did not offer an explanation for this situation instead of assuming they could sneak this by their loyal, regular viewers. This was all anyone was talking about last week, and it’s insulting that it wasn’t addressed on the show.
For this week’s episode, the teams were off to Oman. Would the long-awaited proposal from Meathead Chad finally happen?...

The No. 1 rule of The Amazing Race is to always read your clue. Kevin, 20, and Michael Wu, 58, failed to do so twice — illegally having a cab lead them to a location and then taking a cab — causing them to incur a one-hour penalty, which led to their elimination in Russia. "When we got to the Pit Stop, we had no idea we broke two rules," Kevin tells TVGuide.com. "That's why we were smiling walking up because when Chad and Stephanie had to go pay their taxi, we thought we were safe." See what else the father-son duo and YouTube sensations had to say about their time on the race, if Michael's heat exhaustion in Ghana was a factor and more.

In the middle of the Detour task Nat and Kat selected, Nat said "it's like painting by numbers but with accordions." This episode of The Amazing Race was similar: familiar elements, lots of screw-ups, nothing special. The best part was the suspenseful ending: Chad and Stephanie checked in before Michael and Kevin, but were told by Phil they had to go get their bags and pay their cab driver first. Kevin and Michael showed up,...

Here is Sean Furfaro's recap of The Amazing Race, Episode 7.
Last week’s episode of the Amazing Race featured no real progression in the Race itself since it was a non-elimination leg. Essentially Chad got frustrated at Stephanie, Thomas was condescending to Jill, and Nick and Vicki sucked at anything and everything they tried. Sounds like every other episode so far this season. What would the second leg in St. Petersburg bring?
My Random Thoughts:
- Jill and Thomas started the leg out in first place, and on the obligatory ‘Leaders talking about their great teamwork’ on-camera confessional: Jill declared that “Our main issue is Thomas talking at me and not to me”, while Thomas explained “We work very well together. I hope that continues.“ Yep, they sound like they’re on the same page.
- Brook and Claire opened their clue to find that they were heading off to the circus,...

On 'The Amazing Race' (Sun., 8Pm Et on CBS), being faster than a competitor doesn't really work if you've broken rules along the way. Two teams battle to reach host Phil Keoghan in sixth place and avoid elimination from the competition.
Chad and Stephanie's strategy is to leave their luggage behind. But Keoghan makes them turn back, retrieve their bags and pay the cab driver. He also penalizes them by a half-hour.
Meanwhile, Michael and Kevin also (unintentionally) break the rules on this leg of the race, using cabs instead of walking. They're forced to wait an hour as penalty. Who will make it, and whose journey is over?

Since this is my first Amazing Race post on Spoiler TV, let me take a minute to give you some background. My name is Sean Furfaro and I've been writing a blog for just over 2 years. It's called Sean's Random Thoughts, and some of you may recognize that name from the Lost recaps I did during the sixth season, which were featured on DarkUFO. I am presently recapping the current seasons of Survivor and The Amazing Race, and my recaps will be up within 30 minutes of when the show finishes airing on the East Coast. I hope you enjoy them. Last week, I ripped episode five of The Amazing Race, calling it boring and too controlled. I pined for the days of multiple forms of travel, difficult challenges and frequent changes to the race standings.
Apparently all I needed to do was ask for a return to the more interesting days of The Amazing Race’s past and we would get that. This week we were treated to a difficult leg filled with drama, second guesses and a dynamic feel to the entire episode. I joked that “Tastes Like a Million Dollars” would not be sent to the Emmy committee.
If “Run Babushka, Run” were submitted for judgment, The Amazing Race would retake the Emmy for Outstanding Reality Competition from Top Chef.
My favorite aspect of this week was the Detour. Two very difficult choices, but each could be completed quickly. Classic Cinema could have...

In the fifth episode of The Amazing Race 17 and a somewhat simple leg of the race, team positions barely changed and beach volleyball partners Katie and Rachel both started and ended in last place.
Shown on last week, four teams were able to make an earlier flight from Ghana to Sweden, securing them the top spots. That advantage carried over to this stage since there wasn’t much travel involved, making it near impossible for the other teams to pick up any ground.
“If we had gotten on that first plane, we would have been positioned great” says Rachel. “This leg was a straightforward race.”
Starting in first place, Nat and Kat were able to use the season’s first Fast Forward, allowing them to do a special challenge and after completion could go straight to the pit-stop. The challenge had the doctors eating a cooked sheep’s head, a Norwegian Christmas tradition,...

Somewhere after the less than spectacular family edition of The Amazing Race (season 8) the show has become more controlled. Gone are the days of the specific twelve hour rest period at the Pit Stop. No longer do we see teams with one or two hour leads on the competition.
Most of the time the result of these changes has been that teams are bunched closer together making for more drama on the final race to the Pit Stop. What is also possible is what we witnessed last night on “Tastes Like A Million Dollars,” a leg where virtually nothing happens.
During the early seasons the legs were longer and more stretched out. Navigation played a much bigger role in each leg. This created two scenarios. First, if a team had a lead and avoided mistakes, it was very difficult to catch them. The second, however, was that if a team made a mistake,...

This week’s episode of The Amazing Race, “We Should Have Brought Gloves and Butt Pads”, reminded us that competition on the race is a team effort more.
Despite individual challenges such as the Roadblocks, the ability to work with your teammate and know their strengths and weaknesses is as important as your own ability to carry the team.
Sure, sometimes what the race throws at a team and how that plays into their strengths and weaknesses has a large element of luck to it. This week’s Detour challenged teams to cruise down a snow track on a new Tech Sled or complete a tedious native tent build.
As Vicki said, “We’re more of a physical couple than mental” and their experience skiing and riding enabled them to nail the Sled course in one try and pass three teams in the process. Knowing they were a better physical...

Connor & Jonathan have become the third team to be eliminated from The Amazing Race. The a cappella singers from Princeton finished bottom in Sweden after a tight race to the pitstop against volleyball players Katie & Rachel. They had struggled with this week's speed sledding detour - as did many of the teams - opting to switch to the other option of tent building at the last minute. The episode opened as the nine remaining teams returned to the children's school from the previous leg's challenge to help with rebuilding work, before learning they would be traveling 4,500 miles from Ghana to Kiruna, Sweden. Because of limited flights from Accra Airport, every team was given a ticket on the same flight although they didn't have to use it. Connor and Jonathan were the first to leave, followed by Gary & Mallory, Chad & Stephanie, Katie & Rachel, (more)...

The pair had started third in Ghana but fell behind during the challenges, with Michael needing medical help on the detour. He told Phil that it was his fault the pair finished last, saying that his body "gave up", although Kevin insisted that he was "proud" of his father and the duo would be even more motivated on next week's leg. This week's instalment opened with the remaining teams traveling from the market to Jamestown in search of the Akotoku Boxing Academy and the next clue. From Eastnor Castle, the teams will fly to Accra, Ghana. They will find their next clue at Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park. Jill and Thomas, who won the Express Pass last time, head out first and Jill is ready to prove she can do things. The doctors, Nat and Kat leave second, followed by Gleeks Connor and Jonathan, who wait for Brook and Claire. Mean Girls Katie and Rachel leave next, and accompany the Gleeks and the Home Shopping Hosts. Brook uses her sexuality to find their way to the airport. Why, Brook, why. Gary and Mallory, who are impossible to hate, leave next, followed by Michael and Kevin. The unforgettable Chad and Stephanie leave next, followed by Andie and Jenna. Nick and Vicki, who are just lucky to be here, bring up the rear.
The leads any teams got mean nothing, however, because there's only one flight to Accra, which will even everything out.

The clip has been making the television rounds for weeks, but last night on the premiere of The Amazing Race, we finally got to see the context in which Claire got drilled in the face with a watermelon from the backfiring ballista.
However, in my opinion, it wasn’t the best part of the episode, despite all the hype that it has received. That goes to Nick and Vicki and their tremendous interview with Phil on the pit stop mat.
The challenge and interest of the first leg of this seventeenth edition of The Amazing Race fell beneath the high standards that have been set on previous seasons. Often the opening legs have many more clues than subsequent legs and lead teams all over the place with a number of different challenges. Scaling a wall with water being dumped on you and firing a watermelon from a ballista do not...

Ron and Tony have become the first team to be eliminated from the 17th season of The Amazing Race. The best friends finished bottom on Sunday night's season premiere of the CBS competition, which saw a new batch of 11 teams begin the journey around the world for $$1 million. "Even though it is a short-lived moment, to be with my best friend and help him live a dream, life is good," said Ron. Among the other competitors are home shopping hosts Brook & Claire, dating couples Stephanie & Chad, Jill & Thomas and Nick & Vicki, doctors and best friends Nat & Kat, Ivy League a cappella singers Connor & Jonathan, beach volleyball partners Katie & Rachel, father-and-son Michael & Kevin, father-and-daughter Gary & Mallory, and recently reunited biological mother-and-daughter Andie & Jenna. The teams met Phil in Gloucester, Ma and he (more)...

Season 17 of The Amazing Race takes off in Gloucester, Ma. Right away we meet our 11 teams, Brook and Claire (the home shopping hosts), Chad and Stephanie (the fast movers), Katie and Rachel (the volleyball players), Connor and Jonathan (the Gleeks), Nat and Kat (the doctors, Stat!), Michael and Kevin (the asian sensations), Nick and Vicki (the tattooed dimwits), Ron and Tony (Broadway BFFs), Jill and Thomas (the . . . normal couple who is perfect for this show), Mallory and Gary (Miss Kentucky and Dad Kentucky), and Andie and Jenna (the biologically reunited). And our host, Phil, who kind of looks like a vampire, but only because that's popular these days.
There's a new twist this season: The Express Pass. If a team wins an express pass, they can use it at any time with any challenge they don't want to complete. So basically they can skip a whole task. Immediately everyone is...

Chicago – There is absolutely nothing amazing about “The Amazing Race.” There’s also nothing that’s exciting, innovative, insightful or original about this long-running reality contest, despite the fact that it’s garnered twelve Primetime Emmys. A more accurate title would’ve been “The Diverting Race,” since the show merely consists of cardboard thrills and cartoonish characters that appeal only to one’s inner fast food junkie.
The premise is a simple one: eleven teams race around the world in a network-designed obstacle course that culminates in a grand prize of one million dollars. If “It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World” were remade as a Reality TV show, it would’ve looked exactly like this. The premiere episode is always the weakest because none of the contestants acquire enough screen time to emerge as anything other than oversimplified caricatures. It doesn’t matter who wins, because it’s...

Last night's season finale of "Survivor: Heroes vs. Villains," ended up being something of a surprise and something of a slight letdown. Going into the two-hour episode, I'd assumed that the game was either Parvati's or Russell's to lose, depending on which of the two made it into the final tribal council. They both made it. And for the second season in a row, I completely underestimated the hatred that the jury would have for Russell. And for the second season in a row, it was not the best player, but the player that the jury hated the least who won the million dollars.
There were five going into last night's episode: Colby, Jerry, Sandra, Parvati, and Russell. The first immunity challenge -- holding up a stack of plates on a lever -- seemed tailor made for Parvati, who has been killing in challenges (it was revealed at...

Two of the three best (and the only really good) competitive reality shows on television, "Survivor" and "The Amazing Race" (the other being "Top Chef") have recently kicked off their 20th and 16th cycles, respectively. A decade now since "Survivor" premiered (and nine years since "The Amazing Race" began its run), the two shows are, surprisingly, as strong as ever. Indeed, both of these shows (which air on CBS) have little in common with the proliferation of terrible competitive reality shows that have pock-marked our TV schedules in the wake of the success of "Survivor": They aren't about talent, they aren't about singing, dancing, modeling, cooking, sewing, or weight loss. More than anything, they are about human drama, and during the seasons in which these two shows have cast the right humans, the drama is unparalleled on competitive reality television.
