Producers of “The Garcias” have re-acquired the rights to the family comedy series from HBO Max and are shopping the show to other buyers.
HBO Max canceled the series after Season 1 aired last year. New Cadence Prods. has reclaimed the streaming and international rights to the 10 episodes and is seeking a new home for the show that revolves around a large, multicultural and multigenerational Latino family.
HBO Max still had nine years left on its license for Season 1 of “The Garcias” after dropping the series. New Cadence, headed by “The Garcias” co-creator/showrunner Jeff Valdez and investor Sol Trujillo, struck a deal with HBO Max that gives them the ability to produce new episodes of the series and sell the existing episodes to a rival outlet. New Cadence’s deal with HBO Max already was structured so as to ensure that the company retained long-term ownership of “The Garcias” outright.

When the powers that be decided that HBO Max’s sitcom The Garcias — a sequel series to Nickelodeon’s The Brothers Garcia, which aired from 2000 to 2004 — would not get an FYC campaign to promote its Emmys eligibility, the show’s executive producer Jeff Valdez took matters into his own hands.
“We were told HBO Max would not be able to assist with a campaign in support of this title, so we took 30,000 and decided to get as creative as we could to bring attention to a series that is unique and we believe merits the consideration of the industry,” Valdez tells THR.
Valdez has launched a guerrilla Emmys campaign for the comedy series, hoping to gain the attention of Television Academy members through innovative PR strategies. “Necessity is the mother of invention,” he adds. Emmy voters will see digital posters on Sunset Boulevard...

“The Garcias” on HBO Max is not a period drama, but clothing is just as important for the characters in the day-to-day shenanigans of the Garcia family who are enjoying an extended Summer vacation at their fancy beach home in Mexico.
Based on the Nickelodeon series “The Brothers Garcias,” “The Garcias” spinoff is the first English-language sitcom to have an all-Latino cast and creative team. This time around showrunner and creator Jeff Valdez flips the original script, which featured three boys and a girl, by casting three girls and a boy. The series also jumps forward 15 years and the Garcia kids, now all grown up and with children of their own, are surrounded by strong women. “I was raised with five sisters,” Valdez explains. “That was by design.”
Valdez called on costume designer Natalia Collazo to dress the extended family, and that meant creating individual styles for each of the characters – thirteen in total.

The Garcias are all grown up in the HBO Max reboot of the landmark Nickelodeon series The Brothers Garcia. For Jeff Valdez, executive producer and showrunner, the project is this against-all-odds labor of love. Over a decade-plus, he worked through network meetings, a raging pandemic, and Mother Nature to see his vision realized. That vision picks up more than 20 years after the landmark original series first hit the airwaves. The cast all return, including parents Ray (Carlos Lacámara) and Sonia (Ada Maris) with their kids George (Bobby Gonzalez), Carlos (Jeffrey Licon), and Lorena (Vaneza Pitynsk). They are sharing a big beach house with their respective spouses and children for the summer in Riviera Maya, Mexico, and they’ll see their share of guests over the course of the season. Even youngest sibling Larry (Alvin Alvarez) is back, checking in from space — the character is living his dream as an astronaut.

Reviving a classic TV series is never an easy feat - just take it from "The Garcias" showrunner Jeff Valdez. The executive producer and cocreator of Nickelodeon's "The Brothers Garcia" - a family sitcom that follows the three Garcia brothers growing up in San Antonio - spent a decade getting the rights back to his show and developing its reboot for HBO Max. With a fresh take on the hit 2000s series, Valdez is immensely proud of the story he's been able to re-create.

In the early 2000s, “The Brothers Garcia” was a hit on Nickelodeon; that show depicted a loving Latino family in San Antonio, and was anchored by the dynamic between squabbling brothers.
In keeping with the current vogue for reviving recognizable IP on a roughly two-decade cycle, six of that show’s principal cast members are back for a sequel series on HBO Max. “The Brothers Garcia” is created (as was its Nick ancestor) by Jeff Valdez, and depicts an extended family enjoying an extended-stay vacation on a Mexican beach.
Notionally, “The Garcias” is pitched at a broad audience: Its humor is broad, its plotlines are heartfelt. But the great frustration of “The Garcias” lies in the way that, seeking to reach just about anyone, it lacks texture and specificity. Indeed, it seems to have ported from kiddie network Nickelodeon not merely a set of characters but a sensibility, tending toward first-thought punchlines,...

Fuse Media has been taken over in a management buyout following its 2019 bankruptcy reorganization.
The company operates the Latinx-focused Fuse cable channel and FM music outlet. Fuse Media has been owned by a group of private equity firms and hedge funds since it completed its Chapter 11 filing.
Fuse Media CEO Miguel Roggero, who has been with Fuse and its predecessors since 2006, will lead the current team that includes Judi Lopez, head of content distribution, Fernando Romero, head of ad sales, programming chief Marc Leonard, marketing head Mark McIntire and digital head Patrick Courtney.
Financial details of the transaction were not disclosed. Roggero noted the rarity of a Latinx-led management team taking over a national media outlet.
“At a time when millions of Americans of all races and ethnicities are calling for more representation and servicing of underserved communities, the Fuse Media management team is taking ownership of its collective destiny.

New Cadence Productions has set a first-look development pact with WarnerMedia to produce comedy specials and to develop a series for WarnerMedia platforms.
Headed by writer-producer Jeff Valdez, New Cadence launched earlier this year as a production venture designed to develop series and other content from Latinx creators, actors, directors and producers. Valdez’s partners in the venture are Sol Trujillo, former Us West and Orange CEO, HBO and 21st Century Fox alum Vincent Cordero and investor Bruce Barshop.
New Cadence is assembling a comedy festival focused on Latinx talent to be held next year in San Antonio, Texas. The pact with WarnerMedia calls for at least one special for HBO Max to be derived from the Ha Comedy Festival. The deal was expected to be announced today at L’Attitude, a three-day business conference that begins today in San Diego focusing on Latinx movers and shakers in a variety of industries.

You can’t change tires on the freeway. That’s producer Jeff Valdez’s description of the systemic issues that have kept Latinx talent in the entertainment industry at minuscule levels, despite the growth of the U.S.-born Hispanic population and its influence on popular culture.
Valdez, a comedian turned producer turned entrepreneur, has launched a production venture, New Cadence, designed to bring promising Latinx creative talent to the forefront.
Before New Cadence hit the content marketplace to shop its wares, however, Valdez and his partners commissioned a study of the creative community’s “supply chain” — examining everything from the age and ethnicity of studio film directors and TV showrunners to the representation of Latinx talent agents at the major agencies. The results were disheartening, but not surprising. In most areas, Latinx talent represented less than 1% of those employed in Hollywood.

Si TV on Wednesday announced a slate of seven new original series, a new interstitial movie-news segment and a second season of Urban Jungle -- which nearly doubles the amount of original programming now airing on the year-old cable network. The news means that the English-language, Latino-targeted network -- which launched in February 2004 with five original shows and until recently had 10 on the air -- will now have a total of 19 original programs on its schedule. The new projects range from what the network calls "reali-mentaries" to sketch comedy and game shows. "These new programs follow in the Si TV tradition of delivering edgy, unpredictable and irreverent content to viewers," Si TV chairman and co-founder Jeff Valdez said. "We are proud to be able to offer these signature programs that will help us continue to build and keep our base of loyal viewers."...

As Si TV celebrates its one-year anniversary, Jeff Valdez, the channel's co-founder and chairman, feels the milestone is validation for his hard work launching the English-language, Latino-targeted network. "Talk about a dream come true", he said. "When my partner (entrepreneur Bruce Barshop) and I decided to launch a cable channel, we thought, 'How hard will it be? We can do it in six months.' We missed that by a multiple of 10." But Valdez recognizes that the odds of launching a successful cable channel -- especially one that's not owned by a major media company -- are slim at best. "Not that long ago, a person who's a chairman and CEO of a major media company asked me, 'Do you know how hard it is to launch a cable channel?' Even big media companies sometimes fail, and you sure don't do it (successfully) independently, '" Valdez said.
