We’ve covered plenty of obscure films available on iTunes in previous From VHS to VOD columns but Apple’s digital service is not the only VOD service making waves into the strange and obscure – there’s plenty of odd, unseen and unreleased (well unreleased on disc formats) films available on Amazon Video.
Unlike iTunes, a lot of the more obscure titles are only available for streaming rather than purchase, though the wide variety of films you don’t, and probably won’t see elsewhere makes up for that. Like iTunes there are some truly obscure films hidden away in the depths of Amazon’s vast collection of movies. Some of which have been made available in the UK for the first time since VHS and a Lot that have been added to the service in their original uncut form!
So, with that said here’s highlight some of the best (well,...

The Vinegar Syndrome video label continues to unearth obscure examples of 1960s erotica. None is more bizarre than "Infrasexum", a 1969 concoction by director/actor Carlos Tobalina, who would ultimately be regarded as one of the more prolific hardcore filmmakers. Back in '69, however, it was still difficult to get theatrical showings of hardcore films, which were generally relegated to 8mm film loops sold in adult book stores. Tabolina tried to push the envelope with "Infrasexum" but was still confined by the dreaded "community standards" obscenity laws that mandated only soft-core movies could generally be shown without causing a major legal flap from local conservative groups that had routinely declared war on pornography. "Infrasexum" (I have no idea what the title means and apparently neither did Tobalina) attempts to tell a poignant story about the toll the aging process takes on sexual libido. The film opens in the...

The New Erotic Adventures Of Casanova
(1977, dir: Carlos Tobalina)
John Holmes (Eruption) stars as John, a man who has recently inherited and sold off the estate of his late great grandfather. Looking for something of a keepsake, he visits the antique dealer (Tory Jeffery, The Autobiography of a Flea) and is given a bottle of cologne found in a desk. The cologne belongs to great Casanova and was used to scent his love letters. He applies some to his clothes and this leads to the first of many sexual encounters, this time being with the cleaner of the motel he is staying at. Once getting dirty with cleaner, he visits his family while he’s in town. Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on your preference) the effect of the cologne rubs off on them, leading John to literally rub off on them. Yes, even his underage cousins fall foul to magic of this scent.

My Sinful Life (1983)
“School Girls By Day… Super Ladies Of The Night”
Ah, incest! One of the ultimate taboos. The world of porn has dealt with the subject a lot and continues to do so. Will Carlos Tobalina’s 1983 attempt stand up to the likes of Kirdy Stevon’s Taboo series? Judging by my experience with the work of Tobalina up to this point, I’m just going to say no…
Danielle (Lust Weekend) stars as Jill, a young girl who has recently moved in with her aunt after securing a place in college. Without real prompt or emotion, she recounts some of the truly horrific (yet, erotic) sexual acts put upon on her by the greasy mits of her adoptive parents Christine (Rita Ricardo, Girlfriends) and her husband Sebastian (Don Fernando, Oriental Madam). Even her brother Ron (Tom Byron, Tomboy) enjoyed some good old fashioned family fun! After rather...

Anticipation
(1981, dir: Carlos Tobalina)
“Beyond Temptation…”
Joyce (Sheila Parks, Casanova II) and Jerry (Jesse Adams, Deep Rub) are newlyweds who, after some mind numbingly awkward conversation, make love for the first time. After breaking in the cheap motel bed (how romantic!), the pair talk about Jerry’s brother Steve (Joey Silvera, Carnal Haven), who apparently had problems with his parents when he announced that he was marrying a girl with a reputation by the name of Wendy (Karo Akamoto – in her only role). We also find out that he is set to be released from prison for accidentally killing (or so he thought, just watch, it makes sense) the lover of his cheating wife. Once released, the brothers are reunited and introduced to their new sisters-in-law. Whilst on a trip to what looks like the coldest beach ever, Joyce and Steve begin to have forbidden thoughts for each other. Actually,...

Come Under My Spell
(dir: Carlos Tobalina, 1979)
“The film that will bring you up to a joy you’re paying for!”
The film opens up in hip and swinging San Fransisco and instantly we are introduced to some heavy student action. Before the memories of university life get the better of me (yeah right!), we are introduced Fernando, played by Fernando Fortes (I Am Always Ready). Fernando is a foreign exchange student who really, really like animals! Unfortunately for him, he hasn’t had any human action since arriving in America. Thankfully, his friend Dave, played by Blair Harris (Teeny Buns) is on hand to try and rectify that. He sets Fernando up with a threesome, but it doesn’t go to plan. Being the good friend that he is, Dave decides to cheer him up by buying a cheap copy of a sexual hypnotism book. After studying hard through the power of montage,...

Sexual Heights
(dir: Carlos Tobalina, 1981)
“Unparallelled peaks of passion…”
Got a little fact for you all before we start. Did you know that there are more divorced men living in San Fransisco than anywhere else in the world? No? Well neither did I until watching this film. A few minutes in and we’re learning something already! Anyway, we meet our main characters, a group of divorced buddies who live together. We have Joe the architect, played by Herschel Savage (Jail Bait, Fleshdance), Ron the doctor, played by Jamie Gillis (Waterpower, Dracula Sucks), Jim the Lawyer, played by Jesse Adams (Mob Job, Ultraflesh) and Art the engineer, played by Michael Morrison (Purely Physical). After watching some porn, Joe tells them the story of how he came to be divorced. It’s all down to his pesky dick teasing babysitter Laurie, played by Tawny Pearl (Lusty Ladies). After talking about he nearly raped the poor thing,...

Three Ripening Cherries
(dir: Carlos Tobalina, 1979)
“Ripe for Action ready to be plucked…’”
Don’t you just love sisters? Well, thankfully Uncle Tobalina has a film just for you! What we have here are the three sisters. Sally, Lucy and Ann played by Dorothy Lemay (Taboo, Chopstix), Misty Regan (Champagne Orgy, Baby Cakes) and my favourite, Brooke West (Fantasy, The Blonde). After a hard day at school, the girls go home and ask their mum Rose, played by Kitty Shayne (Sexual Heights, Undulations) all about sex. She tells them about her experiences when she was their age. We find out her virginity was robbed by a family friend leading her to seek out compassion whenever and wherever she could. Her journey to find the Perfect orgasm comes to an end when she meets the man who would become her husband. How very aromatic indeed! Inspired by her stories, the girls...

Carnal Haven
(dir: Carlos Tobalina, 1976)
“Sharon has the ‘Gypsy Grip’… But John knows the ‘Inka Knot’”
Not every couple has amazing sex. Thankfully, for those couples out there who suffer, you are not alone! You see, we have four couple who each have their own problems and hang ups. Firstly, we have Leslie and Richard, played by Leslie Bovee (Maraschino Cherry) and John Leslie (Dracula Sucks). When Richard isn’t fantasising about other women, Leslie is downing her sorrows with good old J&B. Their marriage is the same way Leslie probably takes her whiskey, on the rocks. Of course, their last ditch attempt at saving their marriage is to visit the sex clinic of Dr. Klein and Dr. Wasserman, played by Sharon Thorpe (Sexworld, Femmes de Sade) and Ken Scudder (Pretty Peaches, Tropic of Desire). Leslie and Richard aren’t the only ones attending however! We also have Pat and her pimp husband,...

Fantastic Orgy
(dir: Carlos Tobalina, 1978)
“Her Sexual Drive Makes Her A Star…!”
Iris Medina (playing herself in more ways than one) is a filmmaker. She has previously been producing sex related films, especially for college. She decides to take that next creative step from arthouse student filmmaking, hardcore pornography! When she isn’t behind the camera, she’s having some fun on the couch thinking of her stars and fantasising. One of her all time fantasies is sleep with the legendary John Holmes (Prisoner of Paradise, Tapestry of Passion). After shooting some scenes involving the beautiful Annette Haven (Barbara Broadcast, Dracula Sucks) and Desiree West (All Night Long, Carnal Haven), Iris finally gets to play out her ultimate fantasy with Mr. Holmes. Yep, that’s all I can really say about the plot…
Yep, story isn’t really the focus of this effort. What we have is a story thumbed...

Mai Lin vs. Serena
Carlos Tobalina (The Ultimate Pleasure, I Am Always Ready) has a little bit of a problem. He has a new film lined up and needs to find his leading lady. His options are the cute blonde Serena (Dracula Sucks, Pleasure Palace) and fiery Mai Lin (Oriental Madam, Peepholes). To help him solve his casting troubles, the pair decide to play a little game. They set off to compete against each other in the form of challenges. Starting by giving diners of a local restaurant something much tastier than the house special. Yes, this is one dining experience they will never forget! Once they have finished that, they move on to a local “kinda” gay bar and hit it off straight away with a cute lesbian couple. As a result of their public displays of competitive affection, the pair find themselves in jail (I’m guessing, because it just happens) but,...

The Ultimate Pleasure
Stars: Kristine Heller, Jeff Lyle, Annette Haven, John Holmes | Written by Edgar G. Warren | Directed by Carlos Tobalina
Kristine Heller (Confessions, Teeny Buns) and Jeff Lyle (Suzi Superstar, Oriental Babysitter) play as Rose and Jim (no, not the two rag dolls who live on the canal) who are couple trapped in a sexless marriage. The pair deals with the problem in their own way. Whilst working in his cab, Jim discovers a briefcase full of money and of course, goes to Vegas to get some action in the form of the lovely Annette Haven (Barbara Broadcast, China Girl) and her friends who are high end call girls. Rose however, deals with her issues with therapy. Oh, and the help of a wonder drug that induces her in to a deep sleep to awaken her deepest sexual desires (you know, the normal route!).
