As other major European broadcasters, Spain’s Atresmedia is making a large bet on its VOD content offer, focused around the high-profile streaming service Atresplayer, which ambitiously re-launches July 5.
Just until a few years ago, European TV giants treated their streaming operations to bedrock linear lineups. Those days have gone. At Annecy, BBC and France Télévisions were talking up their streaming services as their future. ITV and Germany’s Rtl are bowing their biggest plays on Ott operations, Itvx and Rtl+, respectively, powering up strong subscriptions’ hikes.
Belgium’s Vrt currently estimates “almost a 50/50 split” in its acquisitions budget as it focusing on “finding unique series that viewers wouldn’t expect from a public broadcaster for its streaming service,” Sven Van Lokeren, head of international fiction series acquisition at Belgium’s Vrt told Variety at February’s London TV Screenings.

AMC Networks Intl. Latin America has acquired Rtve hit, Spanish-Portuguese thriller “Sequía,” which will be broadcast throughout the region on its Europa Europa channel.
The story centers on the mystery behind two mummified corpses – apparent murder victims — that are discovered when a long submerged village emerges from the drying Campomediano reservoir along the Spanish-Portuguese border during a prolonged drought (“sequía” in Spanish).
While a Spanish inspector and investigative reporter suspect the bodies may be linked to environmental protests that took place to prevent the creation of the reservoir, a Portuguese detective is secretly investigating the possibility that one of the deceased could be the heir to the Souza Cardoso fortune who disappeared years ago.
Weaving between two time periods, the late 1990s and the present, when secrets begin to be revealed, the story follows two influential families in Spain and Portugal who inhabit beautiful areas of both countries as well...

Adriana Ugarte, star of hit Spanish TV drama “The Time in Between” and Pedro Almodóvar’s “Julieta,” will play the lead role in Atresmedia original series “Madre.”
A remake of successful Turkish TV drama “Anne,” in turn an adaptation of Japanese series “Mother,” “Madre” continues Spanish media conglomerate Atresmedia’s bet on re-versioning recent standout Turkish scripted series. This strategy kicked-off with “Alba,” the Elena Rivera-starring redo of female empowerment skein “Fatmagul,” a modern Turkish classic.
A 13-hour series, “Madre” is produced by Atresmedia TV in collaboration with Buendía Estudios, the joint-venture launched last year by Atresmedia and Telefonica-owned pay TV operator Movistar Plus.
Scheduled to premiere this year on Atresmedia’s SVOD service Atresplayer Premium and then launch on the group’s core channel Antena 3 in Spanish TV primetime, “Madre” will follow the same release windowing as “Alba,” which bowed in March on Atresplayer and now awaits a free-to-air TV debut.

Cesc Gay’s “The People Upstairs” (a.k.a. “Sentimental”), Nacho Álvarez’s feature debut “My Heart Goes Boom! (“Explota Explota”) and the series “Ines of My Soul” (“Inés del alma mía”), based on the book of the same name by Isabel Allende, will have their world premieres at the San Sebastian film festival in September.
All three are galas from Radio Televisión Española (Rtve), official sponsor of the festival.
Spain’s Gay had a hit with “Truman,” starring Ricardo Darin (“The Secret in Their Eyes”) and Javier Cámara (“Talk to Her”). The film world premiered at San Sebastian in 2015, won best actor for Darin and Camara, and went on to carve out sizeable box office in and outside Spain.
“The People Upstairs,” starring Camara, Belen Cuesta, Griselda Siciliani and Alberto San Juan, is the adaptation of a play by Gay himself, where a meeting between two neighboring couples ends in an emotional tsunami.

TV’s spring finales continue this week, with two podcast favorites taking their bows. First up, we look at the comedies and some reality, including Netflix’s Grace and Frankie and the finale of The Amazing Race. We follow that with the genre and drama entries, including the finales of Elementary, Shield, Arrow, and intense installments of Orphan Black, Outlander, and Penny Dreadful. Afterward, the spotlight section makes its long-awaited return as we dive deep with the Mad Men series finale, and we round out the podcast with yet another season spotlight, with SoS’s Elena Rivera joining us to take a look at the fantastic first season of Jane the Virgin.
Language warning: At the Televerse, we usually strive to keep our conversation PG. This week, for whatever reason, we were in a sweary mood and wound up dropping f-bombs left and right. We should be back to our family-friendly selves next week.

When it debuted in early 2014 on FX, You’re the Worst unfortunately got lumped together with all the other shows about people in relationships that were in production or released around that time. You’re the Worst was a lower-key choice for the network: a small-scale character comedy that had none of the splashy, dramatic flare of other flagship shows. This tonal difference between the network and You’re the Worst was maybe why it was overlooked by a lot of television viewers, but it’s also a reason it got to flourish creatively and comically in its first season. Low network expectations and low ratings sometimes create an alchemic space to do whatever comes to mind and because of that space, You’re the Worst was like nothing else on TV last year.
