Tko’s president Mark Shapiro called Disney CEO Bob Iger a ‘sports freak,’ and made it clear he wants the relationship between the companies to continue.
There can be little doubt in the success of UFC pay-per-views on ESPN+, if recent comments by Tko president Mark Shapiro are to be taken at face value. Shapiro spoke to investors at the Goldman Sachs Communacopia + Technology Conference on Wednesday, and as part of his comments spoke to how much his company enjoyed working with Disney to present UFC fights, and that he hopes to get a new deal struck with ESPN’s parent company as soon as possible.
Key Details: Shapiro told investors “it is our intention to re-sign with ESPN.” The negotiating window between Tko and Disney opens in January. Shapiro also mentioned there are “two or three” other platforms that are anxious to negotiate with Tko if it doesn’t renew with Disney.

The subscriber dip is not unexpected, although the previous two corresponding quarters did see subscriber growth.
Is the beginning of the end of ESPN+ in sight? The streamer faces a lot of existential questions these days, but few answers were available in Tuesday’s quarterly earnings report from Disney. The report detailed that in the first three months of 2024, ESPN+ lost 400,000 subscribers, now totaling 24.8. At the end of Disney’s fiscal first quarter, ESPN+ had 25.2 million subscribers. Declines for sports-specific and live TV streaming services are anticipated during the first three months of each calendar year with the conclusion of the college football and NFL seasons.
The company’s flagship streamer Disney+ added 7.9 million domestic customers during the quarter, bringing its new total to 153.6 million. Its general entertainment streamer Hulu also added half a million new subscribers, raising its overall customer base to 50.2 million, its largest total in service history.

Disney wants to sell a minority stake in ESPN to one or more companies/sports leagues, and it could be in for a hefty payday when it does.
Money comes and money goes. Disney is finding that out this week, as the company agreed in principle to pay at least $8.61 billion for Comcast’s stake in Hulu on Wednesday evening. The total price could be higher once all the math is done, but either way, it’s a considerable investment on Disney’s part. Still, if Bank of America analysts are correct, Disney could be poised to recoup some of that cash in short order.
BofA analysis suggests ESPN might be worth as much as $24 billion. The information will be crucial as Disney attempts to seek strategic partnerships for ESPN. The company could sell as much as 36% of ESPN and still retain majority control. How Much for That ESPN in the Window?...

Disney offered a glimpse of ESPN as a standalone business, and revealed that while the channel is still profitable, cord cutting is definitely having an effect on its bottom line.
Cable doesn’t have a lot of pillars left to lean on, but one of the strongest remaining is live sports. ESPN was rated as the most in-demand cable channel of them all in a September survey, as 74% of respondents identified it as a “must-have” channel.
Disney revealed this week that profits at ESPN have dipped by 20% in 2023. ESPN is looking for multiple partners to purchase minority stakes as it pivots to streaming. Cable revenues will continue to dwindle with cord-cutting, demonstrating why distribution of a new ESPN streamer is critical to Disney executives. A new report suggests that Disney is looking for more than one partner for its ESPN streaming platform, and that the service will likely launch sooner rather than later.
The more news that trickles out regarding Disney’s plans to create a direct-to-consumer (Dtc) version of ESPN that doesn’t require a cable subscription, the more it appears the company thinks of that service as an essential part of its operations going forward.
Disney is hoping to team up with two partners to launch a Dtc version of ESPN but doesn’t want to sell more than 10% of the channel. Disney wants to launch its ESPN streaming platform by 2026 at the latest, but Marchand says 2025 is most likely. Conversations between Disney and firms like Google, Apple, and Verizon have already occurred.

Desperation breeds compromise, and Disney found that out the hard way in its recent carriage dispute with Spectrum, the second-largest cable provider in the United States. Disney had to give into a demand it held out against for a long time to get its channels back on the air on Spectrum; granting Spectrum customers access to ad-supported Disney+ at no cost.
The deal will also lead to the creation of a new, sports-focused tier of Spectrum TV that will include login credentials for ESPN+. When Disney launches a standalone, streaming version of ESPN that doesn’t require a cable subscription, users of this plan will be able to access it as well.

Apparently, the interest in acquiring a minority stake in ESPN has been robust of late. That’s according to Disney CEO Bob Iger, who spoke with Wall Street analysts and investors during a conference call to discuss his company’s quarterly earnings report on Wednesday.

Disney CEO Open to Selling ESPN if Strategic Partner Can't Be Found for Standalone Streaming Service
Five years ago, it would have been difficult to imagine the entire future of ESPN would be as up in the air as it is today. The channel was available in 100 million homes in 2011 but has now slipped behind FS1 to be the second-most distributed cable sports channel, with less than 72 million households subscribing.
ESPN is not the only channel to lose a substantial portion of its viewers, of course. Cord cutting has taken a big bite from cable revenues all across the country, and the problem is only getting worse. Disney CEO Bob Iger knows this quite well, which is why he recently signaled a willingness to sell off Disney-owned linear channels like ABC, Disney Channel, Freeform, and others. The focus media-wise at Disney seems to be all about streaming, which is certainly good news for Disney+ and Hulu.

Cord cutting hasn’t slowed down one iota in 2023. According to data from Nielsen, as reported by Sports Business Journal's John Ourand, 3.1 million customers have dropped a cable, satellite, or live TV streaming subscription between January and August of this year.
The numbers have had an effect on even the most evergreen channels. ESPN has not been immune, either; the channel that 78% of cable viewers rated as a “must-have” in September of last year has fallen behind FS1 in terms of carriage by pay-tv customers. Nielsen’s numbers have FS1 in 71.375 million homes, whereas ESPN is now in 71.321 million.

Years ago, in the pages of Men’s Journal, I confessed to a psychotic obsession with the NFL draft. I dreamed of leaving journalism and being allowed to turn around a wayward team like the Jacksonville Jaguars using ideas like, “Always pick the guy who falls in the draft after a positive weed test.”
But Jaguars owner Shahid Khan never returned my calls. Moreover, I’m beginning to think the NFL won’t exist 20 years from now, because of that minor problem of the sport being physically lethal to its employees.

Johnny Manziel, the spectacular Texas A&M quarterback and 2012 Heisman Trophy winner, was drafted by the Cleveland Browns — but only after sliding to the No. 22 pick in the NFL Draft. Manziel, who quickly became a Texas folk hero nicknamed Johnny Football in his freshman year at Texas A&M in 2012, was regarded as the draft’s top quarterback prospect and considered one of the frontrunners for the Houston Texans No. 1 pick. The 2014 NFL Draft. The culmination, for most players, of a lifetime of playing football – hundreds of NFL hopefuls waiting to hear their names announced during one of the seven rounds of the draft.
The 2014 NFL Draft returns to primetime, with the first round taking place Thursday, May 8, followed by the second and third rounds on Friday, May 9. Rounds 4-7 will be held Saturday, May 10.
On Tuesday night, St. Louis Rams players, Robert Quinn, Rodger Saffold, Chase Reynolds, Johnny Hekker, Greg Zuerlein, and Mason Brodine, came out for the special advance screening of the new NFL Draft based film, Draft Day.
When asked what their favorite Sports films were, Quinn paused and said, “It’s a toss up… Remember The Titans and The Replacements,“ while Saffold said, “easy, Hoosiers.” Speaking of basketball, both picked the University of Connecticut Women’s basketball team to win, “with no problem.”
