Bob McMullan, a former Labor minister in the Paul Keating Government, is replacing Alaric McAusland as Ausfilm.s chair despite not being a member of Ausfilm and being based in London.
That said, as a former arts minister, he has a very good understanding of the commercial and cultural value of film and television production and, as a former minister of trade, he is familiar with the challenges of succeeding in international markets. After many years in politics he also has formidable contacts.
McMullan recently retired from politics and now works as. executive director to the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, representing Australia, Korea, New Zealand and Egypt.
He is also an Adjunct Professor for the Crawford School of Public Policy in the Australian National University.
He takes up the new role on July 1.

The ABC’s latest political satire, At Home With Julia, wraps today. The series, which invites Australians into The Lodge and life of Prime Minister Gillard (Amanda Bishop) and her partner Tim Mathieson (Phil Lloyd) is set to air on ABC1 on Wednesday 7 September, 9.30pm.
The 4×30 minute series finds the Prime Minister and Mathieson struggling with alone time as they get harrassed by Bob Katter, live in fear of terrorist attacks and receive unsolicited advice from Paul Keating.
In a statement, Executive Producer/co-writer Rick Kalowski said, “We can’t believe the quality of the cast we got. Or how little we were able to pay them.”
With a cast of sketch and stage comedians, the production is set to spoof Kevin Rudd (Paul McCarthy), Paul Keating and Tony Jones (both played by Jonathon Biggins), Wayne Swan (Alan Dukes) Tony Abbott (Nicholas Cassim), Bob Katter (Drew Forsythe), and Rob Oakeshott...

There's just something about Labor prime ministers and dramatisations of their lives.
We've had The Dismissal detailing the dramatic final days of the Whitlam Government before the controversial sacking by the governor-general, and there was the musical extravaganza on the life and times of our Opera-loving former Pm Paul Keating, titled Keating!
Not surprisingly, we now have the story of his political nemesis and predecessor, Bob Hawke, which aired on Ten last night.

Nearly thirty years ago George Miller and Phil Noyce co-wrote and partly directed the acclaimed mini-series "The Dismissal", a drama about the most infamous day in Australian politics when left-wing Labor Prime Minister Gough Whitlam was forced out of power. Since then there's been little in the way of films or TV about Australian politics, though that changes shortly with the TV movie "Hawke".
The biopic runs from 1977-1991 covering the life and career of Bob Hawke (Richard Roxburgh) from his boozy, womanising days as the trade unions president, his nine years of service as Prime Minister, his extramarital affair with his biographer Blanche d'Alpuget, and the leadership challenge that saw treasurer Paul Keating take over as Pm.
The TV movie will first be broadcast on Channel Ten in Australia on July 18th and a trailer for it was recently released which can be watched below:
