During the 70s, due to social pressure, local Hong Kong female movie stars were unwilling to strip or appear in erotic films while some Taiwanese imports were not shy in taking their clothes off for the camera. Chen Ping was one such actress; upon joining Shaw Brothers she landed the leading role in Ho’s sleazy rape and revenge thriller and by going nude she became an overnight sensation.

In general, Ho Meng Hua doesn’t waste time in telling his story; the film begins with the brutal gang rape of a young female textile factory worker Chu Ling (Chen Ping) on her way home, by five thugs. Too traumatized by the horrific attack, she is unable to continue working in the factory in which the rhythmic motions of the machines remind her of her torment. She quits her...

I confess, I don’t know as much of the work of the revered Johnnie To as I should. I remember seeing Election when it came out in UK cinemas, but I’m not sure that I’ve got round to anything else, so this latest set from Eureka should prove something of an education.

Cheung (Andy Lau) is dying. With just weeks left, he decides to play a game with Police and a local gangster, with the objective of stealing both a valuable necklace and the 5million the gangsters are willing to pay for it. Inspector Ho (Ching Wan Lau) is assigned to the case, and he and Leung develop a relationship of respect as adversaries.
It is fairly obvious where Running Out Of Time is drawing it major inspiration from. Michael Mann’s Heat pre-dates it by just a few years and the central relationship, while...

For those who don’t remember the original, “The Lion Roars 2” is a sequel to the 2002 Hong Kong hit, continuing the period comedy wackiness after a break of some 10 years. The Mainland production sees director Joe Ma (“Love Undercover”) returning along with actress Cecilia Cheung, comedian Xiao Shenyang (“Just Call Me Nobody”) replacing Louis Koo in the male lead role. With support from Xiao Shenyang’s mentor Zhao Benshan, Hui Siu Hung (“I Love Hong Kong 2012”), Victor Huang (“Nightmare”), and Zhang Xinyu (“Flying Swords of Dragon Gate”), the film mixes comedy, romance and Three Kingdoms intrigue in an attempt to serve up more of what made the first film so popular. Cecilia Cheung again plays Ying, a woman disliked in her village for her outspoken and bad-tempered behaviour, not to mention her habit of beating up men who take concubines or cheat on their wives. With her poor father...

The one and only Wong Jing returns to familiar territory with his latest comedy “Beauty on Duty!”, basically a remake of the 2000 Hollywood Sandra Bullock vehicle “Miss Congeniality”. The premise of an attractive young policewoman infiltrating a beauty contest certainly sounds tailor made for the shlockmeister, providing ample opportunity not only for gags, but perhaps more importantly for ogling attractive gorgeous actresses and models. To these ends, the film brings together an impressive cast headlined by Charlene Choi, with support from genre veterans such as Sandra Ng, Sammy Leung, Jim Chim, Cheung Tat Ming, Kingdom Yuen, Lam Suet, and Hui Siu Hung. Somewhat of a throwback to the likes of “Love Undercover” and other favourites, the film was a box office hit, showing again that Wong Jing is one of Hong Kong’s most enduringly popular directors of popcorn fare. Choi stars as rookie policewoman Chung Oi Fong who makes...
