The recent retrospective of Juliet Berto’s acting work at the Brooklyn Academy of Music presents an artist who occupied the forefront of both formal and ideological reimaginings of the medium during her lifetime. An icon of the French New Wave for her roles in landmark films by Jacques Rivette and Jean-Luc Godard, she also regularly lent her presence to works of radical leftist filmmaking from directors such as Robert Kramer and Marin Karmitz. Neige, Berto’s 1981 directorial debut made in collaboration with her partner Jean-Henri Roger, bears the influence of these artists and synthesizes them into something entirely its own, a playful and unpretentious work that nonetheless retains a fierce political anger.

This is the Pure Movies review of Ernest & Celestine, directed by Stéphane Aubier, Vincent Patar and Benjamin Renner, and starring Anne-Marie Loop, Dominique Maurin and Lambert Wilson. The film was reviewed by editor Dan Higgins for @puremovies at the London Film Festival. It is the simplicity of the film that makes it so enjoyable. Gabrielle Vincent’s children’s books have been brought alive with the same painted tones and styles that first accompanied the series. It is a sweet, quaint and charmingly unusual animation. If you look deep enough beyond the watercolour, you can make links to the need for a more accepting society – where bears and mice can co-exist despite their cultural differences. Okay, some bears *might* eat mice, but there are also some bears that are scared of mice and surely somewhere in between there can be a happy balance? You could perhaps go further and look...

Just today I was recommending the incomparably wonderful animated film A Town Called Panic to a friend, which it occurred to me to wonder: what progress has been made on the project the makers of that film (Stéphane Aubier and Vincent Patar) are cooking up now? They're making a new film, Ernest and Celestine (co-directed by Benjamin Renner), and as it turns out there is actually a current article about it in Variety, based on the fact that yesterday saw the debut of footage at the Annecy festival [1] in France.
