Long-nosed British character actor with large, deep-set eyes and high forehead. A former clerk at the London Stock exchange, educated at Felsted School in Essex. On stage in London from 1910, on Broadway from 1924. Invariably specialised in portraying pompous or bumbling upper class twits - replete with monocle and top hat - both in his native England, and in Hollywood.
