This is a list of films for gays to consider who are interested in cinema and its effects over time on gay culture and society as a whole. This list includes films that have a gay aspect to them, as well as films that do not. Films are included on this list for many reasons, some of which are: films with a gay aspect to them, films about gay history, films by significant gay people, films which the gay community largely embraced for different reasons, and other films that can't be so easily classified.
.
For purposes of this list terms such as "film", "cinema", "video", "movie", "tv show", "digital/internet video" and any other similar term will mean to include all forms of moving images. Anything that presents as a moving image in any manner for any length will be thought of as a "film". Also, it doesn't matter how the images are stored, be it on film, tape, digitally, or in some other way, it is considered a "film".

The films on this list are presented in chronological order. The list is always under construction so keep checking back. Comments are always welcome.

- DirectorWilliam K.L. DicksonStarsWilliam K.L. DicksonThe earliest extant sound film. William K.L. Dickson stands in the background next to a huge sound pickup horn connected to a Thomas Edison phonograph recorder. As he plays a violin, two men dance in the foreground. This film was made to demonstrate a new Thomas Edison machine, the Kinetophone. These machines were Kinetoscope peepshow viewers mated with Thomas Edison wax cylinder phonographs. But the Kinetophone never caught on and this film was never released. The film still exists, but the phonograph soundtrack has been lost./n/-
This is a very early bit of film. In it two men are seen dancing together in a traditional manner. Its not known if they are gay, but its important in that it wasn't considered objectionable to film two men dancing.

This movie is wildly famous for many non-gay reasons. However, what is lesser known is that it was made by a gay man in the 1920's in repressed Soviet Union (Russia) who still gave it a gay edge by showcasing the beauty of the male form throughout.

Meanwhile, his daughter, Judy Ginsburg, gets involved in a romance with Ginsburg's Gentile lawyer, John Applegate. - DirectorRouben MamoulianStarsGreta GarboJohn GilbertIan KeithQueen Christina of Sweden is a popular monarch who is loyal to her country. However, when she falls in love with a Spanish envoy, she must choose between the throne and the man she loves./p/k
This is about one of the historical Queens of Sweden. Queen Christina ruled Sweden from 1632 - 1634. Reading the true historical record of her its very clear she's a lesbian. This movie trys to present both ideas, that she's straight and that she's not. It never says she's not straight but her affection for the women around her is clear. The movie pushes the idea she wanted a man but the undercurrent is clearly gay. (Its said that Garbo herself, who portrayed Queen Christina in this film was actually a lesbian herself, referring to her affairs with other women as "exciting secrets".)

- DirectorHoward HawksStarsKatharine HepburnCary GrantCharles RugglesWhile trying to secure a $1 million donation for his museum, a befuddled paleontologist is pursued by a flighty and often irritating heiress and her pet leopard, Baby./s/l
According to multiple sources, it was "Bringing Up Baby" that was the first film to use the word 'gay' to mean homosexual.
In one scene Cary Grant is wearing a lady’s feathery robe. When another character asks why he is wearing that he ad-libs “Because I just went gay!”
In 1938 mainstream audiences didn’t get the reference so the line was thought by most to have meant something like “I decided to be carefree.”

This movie has fascinated certain gays. Armistead Maupin, the author of the essential "Tales of the City" books and movie series places his entire creation up against this movie in an almost invisible way. I'm completely dedicated to Mr. Maupin and his "Tales of the City" and I've watched Vertigo before but maybe I need to again as this movie has never struck me as terribly interesting or important. But many people think otherwise.

Closeted gay writer William Inge wrote several very successful plays and movies. Though he doesn't deal directly with homosexuality in this movie, its thought that the character "Sammy" in this movie is a veiled reference to homosexuality and the fears it provoked in the people of the era.

- StarsSid DavisThis anti-homosexual social "scare" short film focuses on the dangers of young boys talking to strangers./s/d
This film presents lies as facts - suggesting that boys and men can be converted into homosexuals. Which is untrue. Sexuality isn't something that can be changed within a human. How each human experiences sexual attraction is something we each feel as if we were born with. People generally identify with a sexual orientation as one of the following: hetrosexual, homosexual, bisexual, or asexual. Humans do not generally have the ability to change these orientations, they are innate.

A very early film with a gay theme. Two women who run a small school for young children are accused of being lesbians by one of their students. In 1961 the word lesbian is never used in dialogue, but the way in which the accusation is presented on-screen and the way the characters react to it makes it clear this is what the teachers must answer to the parents of the children for.

The star of this movie, Dirk Bogarde is really a gay hero. He decided to star in this movie about effects of the anti gay laws in the United Kingdom back when it was illegal to be gay. He took a risk with his career because he believed in the message of the movie. In later life he came out as a gay man. Its too bad he's not alive today to celebrate the respect gays increasngly now receive. He would have been so pleased and proud. He was an early hero who wanted to make a difference.

- I live in Mansfield, Ohio, where "Camera Surveilance" was shot. This was a "training film" made by the Mansfield Police Department and Highway Safety Foundation, under the aegis of Safety Enterprises, Inc. This film, along with a film called "The Child Molester" (which I have never seen) was made in response to the 1962 discovery of two little girls who were found dead near a creek in a park. It is introduced by the Chief of Police at that time. It goes on to present us with a "sting operation" set up in a public men's restroom in downtown Mansfield's Central Park (which was closed as a "public nuisance" shortly afterward), in which we are presented with scene after scene of gay men having sex with one another in the said restroom. We are even presented with the mugshots of said men, along with the disposition of their case, usually "Committed to Lima State Hospital" or "Committed to the Ohio State Penitentary" "for a term of 1 to 20 years: Psychopath".

"The Beverly Hillbillies" featured a character called "Miss Jane" played by actress Nancy Kulp. Later in life Nancy came out as gay. During the Beverly Hillbillies series it seemed obvious that Miss Jane was gay, despite several episodes written to make it seem otherwise. This episode features a guest star, Sheila Kuehl, who also came out as lesbian later in life. Today Sheila is a powerful politician in California.

In 1967 CBS News prepared a long-form report on homosexuals in America at that time. They interviewed homosexuals who allowed themselves to appear on TV knowing how hard it would mean their lives would become once the TV show aired. CBS also discussed the attitudes of society at that time towards gays, so this piece is a window into the world at that time. The gays who stood up for themselves, and by extension all gays then and now, are people to be watched and respected for the risks they took then. We can learn and be inspired.

Truman Capote was one of the defining personalities of the 20th century. He was an openly gay man who was also a celebrated author. This movie is the first motion picture made of his groundbreaking book "In Cold Blood". It is said "In Cold Blood" changed the way future writers would present non-fiction. There isn't exactly a gay theme to this movie, but much has been discussed, written, and filmed about Capote's relationship with one of the two condemed murderers he profiled in his book - before the two were executed.

Prior to this movie, this was a successful Broadway play. A song in it called "Springtime for Hitler", uses gay stereotypes to mock Hitler. There's nothing terribly good or funny or interesting about this movie - at least to me anyway - but some people have found it good and funny. So, enjoy?
