Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi (2017)
Inconsistent with the rest of its own trilogy and boring
It isn't enough to take the decorum of the Star Wars universe and pretend it's Star Wars. The visual effects overdrive does not make a movie either, it is supposed to support a story not substitute itself to the story.
Not only is this movie inconsistent with the original trilogy (episodes IV - V - VI), it also shows no continuity with the two previous installments of its trilogy. It is clear that épisode VII was going one way, then episode VIII went another way... and this episode IX went again another way. It definitely shows in the scenario and the characters who nearly do not relate with themselves.
I do not pretend to judge the plot twists but they clearly didn't find their target when it comes down to me : I found the twists unrealistic and not in agreement with MY interpretation of what the Star Wars storyline is. But that's only me.
Blue Eye Samurai (2023)
Could have been perfect
The atmosphère and tension set up in the first episode and kept until the 5th or 6th are fantastic.
Let's start by the drawing : it is gorgeous and creates an ambiance that is definitely evocative of you would expect of Japan in the 17th century. Although I'm not sure if what we expect is the actual historical truth, the poetic image is here and is great to dive into.
The story that is set up is exiting. Following the adventures of that revengeful and extremely gifted warrior is really easy because you get caught up into it almost instantly.
I was a bit disappointed by the 2-3 last episodes that are a bit over the top in terms of credibility (the final battle scenes become increasingly way too much to believe in) but also that have the Netflix signature in them : « dilute the story a bit, make sure there's no ending and prepare for a follow up that may or may not be credible but who cares. »
If it leads to a season 2, I'll be happy to watch it, dispite the risk of losing the Japanese ambiance that made this season so nice.
Rebel Moon - Part One: A Child of Fire (2023)
Visually fine but the lack of scenario is appalling
Visually, the film does a nice job even if all of it has been seen before, sometimes with much better visual effects.
Putting all the efforts in visual effects that are ok but not state of the art creates a small disappointment.
Claiming an inheritance from great movies like the 7 samurai or Star Wars sets a high standard that is not met. It does not have the depth of either of them, and definitely not the scenario... which is a problem if you consider Rebel Moon is 60 minutes longer at least than the 7 samurai ! The character are most of the time so transparent that you could anticipate their moves and dialogues, except when they lack consistency : some outbursts come from nowhere and create a surprise but not in a good way unfortunately.
A huge disappointment.
Bird Box (2018)
Really slow journey leading to boredom
Wasn't expecting much and got disappointed nevertheless by the slow pace of the movie. The cast isn't even in terms of presence or charisma (John Malkovich delivers a stunning performance of what he usually does on screen, when some others while not being bad per se will just disappear whiteout the viewer remembering anything they did during their green time). The storytelling is long and the editing do not really make you feel any of the stress the survivors is feeling. I felt like a distant witness to non real and meaningless events.
Zoe (2018)
Beautiful love story
This is a beautiful love story, supported by a fantastic cast. Both lead actors play their part in a subtle way and lead us on a journey about what it means to be in love, and what differences actually make a difference.
