If the summer box office is ever going to heat up, it’ll have to wait a while longer. In a weekend being led by holdovers, Sony’s “The Garfield Movie” looks to overtake “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” for first place on domestic charts.
The marketplace continues to be dire overall, but Sony is doing well for itself. The studio is also putting out the manga adaptation “Haikyu!! The Dumpster Battle” through its anime banner Crunchyroll. Playing in 1,086 locations (including showtimes in a few Imax auditoriums), the high school sports film earned $1.9 million across Friday and preview screenings and looks to take sixth place on domestic charts. It’s just the latest example of how anime has found a niche but dedicated theatrical audience in North America. Not that stateside will make or break “Haikyu!!,” which released in its native Japan back in February and stands as the second-highest...

“3 Body Problem” will end with its third season on Netflix.
The sci-fi adaptation, which launched its first season in March, is officially set to air second and third installments before coming to a close, offering clarity to the streamer’s previous statement that it would return “with all-new episodes to take viewers through the full journey of this epic saga.”
The news was announced during the show’s Netflix Fysee panel on Friday.
The update comes less than a month after “3 Body Problem” was renewed mid-May during Netflix’s upfront presentation in New York City. However, the extent of that renewal was previously unclear.
“We’re thrilled that we get to tell this story through to its epic conclusion,” creators David Benioff, D.B. Weiss and Alexander Woo said in a joint statement at the time. “Ever since we read the last page of Cixin Liu’s magnificent trilogy,...

A “300” TV series adaptation is in early development at Warner Bros. Television, Variety has learned from sources.
Exact plot details are still being worked out, but sources say that the show would serve as a prequel to the 2006 film. No writer or platform is currently attached to the project.
Deals are still being negotiated, but Zack Snyder, who directed and co-wrote “300,” is in talks to direct and executive produce the series. Deborah Snyder, who executive produced “300,” would also return as an executive producer under her and Zack’s Stone Quarry production banner, with Stone Quarry’s Wesley Coller also on board.

Chris Hemsworth is in talks to join another blockbuster franchise.
After playing Marvel’s Thor and the deranged villain Dementus in George Miller’s “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga,” Hemsworth is in talks to star in the upcoming crossover between the “Transformers” and “G.I. Joe” franchises from Paramount.
The “Transformers” and “G.I. Joe” crossover was first teased back in last year’s entry, “Transformers: Rise of the Beasts,” and officially confirmed at this year’s CinemaCon by Paramount. In the end of “Rise of the Beasts,” Anthony Ramos’ character Noah meets a shady government operative named Agent Burke, played “House of Cards” star Michael Kelly. He hands Noah a business card, after saving the world with the Autobots, and it’s revealed Burke works for the G.I. Joes, a special team of commandos. Thanksgiving may be months away, but audiences are already getting ready to feast on Moana 2.
A trailer for the movie was viewed by 178 million people in its first 24 hours this week, more than any other trailer for a film in the history of Disney’s animated empire, which is made up of Walt Disney Animation Studios and Pixar. (Moana is from Disney Animation.)
In terms of trailer viewership, the previous record for Pixar was Inside Out 2 (157 million), and the best for Disney Animation was Frozen 2 (116 million). The Moana 2 trailer also came in above Pixar’s Incredibles 2 (113 million).
The Moana 2 trailer will play before Inside Out 2, which opens in theaters June 14. The upcoming Pixar sequel is tracking to open to $80 million-$85 million, although one service believes it will cross $90 million. Both films are good news for Disney’s animation empire, as Pixar, in particular, has been struggling.

How quickly times change. There once was an era when Pixar didn’t think it needed sequels and could just go from original story to original story. In fact, in 2016, Pixar’s president Jim Morris said there were no Pixar sequel plans after Brad Bird’s “The Incredibles 2,” something of a response to the underwhelming reception to “Cars 2” and, to a lesser degree, “Toy Story 3.

It was not lost on Paul Walter Hauser that previous film representations of the Fantastic Four did not exactly set the world on fire.
During a conversation with The Hollywood Reporter, the in-demand actor reveals that those poorly received movie adaptations of Marvel’s superhero team made him give some extra thought before joining director Matt Shakman’s Disney film that is set to hit theaters July 25, 2025. Hauser, who recently earned an Emmy for his role in Black Bird, will play a not-yet-disclosed role in the project that features Pedro Pascal (Mr. Fantastic), Vanessa Kirby (Invisible Woman), Joseph Quinn (Human Torch) and Ebon Moss-Bachrach (The Thing).
“Don’t think that didn’t weigh in as I was deciding whether or not to take the job,” Hauser says of the property’s checkered Hollywood past. “That movie has not fully been nailed just yet.”
He continues, “But I really do think the combination of the screenplay,...

Historically Black Los Angeles has one less landmark that speaks to its cultural heritage. The iconic “Welcome to Black Beverly Hills” billboard, once proudly stationed near the neighborhood of Ladera Heights, has come down.
The creator of the billboard, Robert China Berry, says that he was forced to take down and move the billboard multiple times and is now seeking more permanent signage elsewhere in the area.
Berry trademarked the term “Black Beverly Hills” in 2012 for his clothing brand, which honors the history and cultural importance of the Black community in the region. But the legacy of Black Beverly Hills goes back decades.
During the 1950s, amid a backdrop of segregation and systemic racism, the area encompassing Baldwin Hills, Ladera Heights, View Park and Windsor Hills emerged as a sanctuary for Black professionals, artists and entrepreneurs in Los Angeles. Like her fellow documentarian Frederick Wiseman, Claire Simon is drawn to institutions, and the human flow that keeps them running. Where many of Wiseman’s films favor a big picture, a systemic view, Simon often works in more intimate close-up, picking out faces and personalities from a larger institutional community. That warmly sociable approach serves the veteran French filmmaker well in “Elementary,” the latest of several Simon documentaries to be set in and around a place of learning — in this case, a diversely attended public elementary school in the outer-Paris suburb of Ivry-sur-Seine, also the backdrop for her 2018 high-school portrait “Young Solitude.”
Looking on with keen attention but little obstruction as the school’s staff and student body negotiate daily challenges of education, communication and conflict, “Elementary” is a gentle, good-humored film, but not a toothless one — making as it does an unspoken but resonant plea for France’s squeezed...

The Unintended Role: An Actor Faces Their AI Doppelgänger
Dear Remy,
As an actor whose voice has apparently been hijacked by the specter of artificial intelligence, I find myself in a perplexing, and frankly infuriating, scenario. Picture this: a bustling tech unveiling, all eyes and ears tuned to the debut of the latest AI marvel — only for me to hear what sounds suspiciously like my own voice echoing back! It’s like attending a party you weren’t invited to, only to find out your clone is the surprise guest of honor.
You see, Remy, I always believed that my voice was uniquely mine. I can still remember the first time I received a comment on it: At my middle school drama classes, my teacher described it as “mellifluous.” I was 10 and had to ask them what the word meant. But when they did, I was overjoyed. Since then, I...

Chris Evans offered some clarification after a resurfaced photo of him signing what initially appeared to be a missile sparked controversy.

Bill Maher had quite a lot to say on his latest episode of Real Time about Donald Trump’s guilty verdict in his criminal hush money trial.
On Thursday, a New York jury found the former president guilty on all 34 counts of falsifying business records. Throughout the five weeks of testimony, the jury heard from a former tabloid publisher, a Hollywood fixer, Trump’s former lawyer and a porn star. Sentencing for Trump is set for July 11.
Maher described Friday’s episode as a “historic show,” seemingly because Trump became the first former president to be convicted of felony crimes.
“Yeah, he’s pretty distraught and pissed off these days,” the host said. “But I gotta say, Don, if there was a silver line to this, you finally did something that made Stormy [Daniels] come.” (The case centered on a sexual encounter that Daniels said she had with Trump in 2006 that...

In “The Great Lillian Hall,” Jessica Lange plays a veteran theater actress — a legend of the Broadway stage — who is always putting on airs, reciting bits from her favorite roles, and carrying on in the tradition of fabled actresses who get known for playing characters like Blanche DuBois because they’ve actually got a lot of Blanche in them. (They believe their own illusions.) Yet just because Lillian Hall is a flamboyant grand dame doesn’t mean that she’s not showing you who she is. Lange, a beauty at 75, has a face that has only grown more expressive with the years. In “The Great Lillian Hall,” that face is a map of emotion we read. Even when Lillian is being deceptive (even when she’s deceiving herself), the majesty of her feelings shines through.

Just because Celestina, the soon-to-be young wife in the “The Young Wife” told friends and family that while the honor of their presence was requested, they would be attending a party, not a wedding, doesn’t make it so. The weight of family, community and ritual aren’t so easily evaded. Or embraced.
So, on the day of her and River’s nuptials, she appears to be wrestling less with the meaning of marriage and more with the weight of the word “wife.” Warm hearts and cooling feet is nothing new for movies, of course, but Kiersey Clemons’ portrayal of Celestina — her head spinning — raises the stakes of love and liberty.
Writer-director Tayarisha Poe has populated her sophomore feature with characters of a neo-bohemian, united colors-of-who-the-fuck-cares aura. Guests arrive with sartorial flash, expressive finery, hairdos that signal independence for days and attitudes that combine and recombine the traditional with the rebellious.

Gigi and Bella Hadid are joining forces to support relief efforts in Palestine.
The supermodel sisters are collectively donating $1 million, a sum that has been earmarked for equal distribution among four organizations with a focus on children and families: Heal Palestine, Palestine Children’s Relief Fund (Pcrf), World Central Kitchen (Wck), and United Nations Relief and Works Agency (Unrwa).
As a whole, the organizations support humanitarian aid like food and medical programs, assist displaced families, and provide psychological services amid the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas. Conflict has been raging in the area following Hamas’ terrorist attack on Israel on Oct. 7.
Heal Palestine — the acronym stands for health, education, aid and leadership to represent pillars of the organization’s programs — is a nonpolitical, nonprofit humanitarian group that works to “provide every young Palestinian in Gaza a chance for a brighter future.”

“Ezra” celebrated its premiere in New York, N.Y., on Thursday with stars Robert De Niro, Rose Byrne, Bobby Cannavale, and Tony Goldwyn all in attendance.
The film is a Bleeker Street Media release that follows Max Bernal (Cannavale), who is a stand-up comedy writer (with scenes filmed at Comedy Cellar) who lives with his dad (De Niro). The comedian faces challenges when it comes to co-parenting their autistic son (William A. Fitzgerald) with his ex-wife (Byrne).
“Ezra” was inspired by the film writer Tony Spiridakis’s personal life, as he has a child who is on the spectrum. “I realized I didn’t know anything about autism, I thought I gotta write this down. Because of the lack of understanding that I had, I kept thinking, every day was a surprise,” Spiridakis told Variety at the film’s premiere.

Weeks after Emmy nominee Giancarlo Esposito teased that he’d be joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe “sooner than you think,” Variety can confirm that he will appear in “Captain America: Brave New World,” which hits theaters next year.
Esposito revealed he’d been cast in a Marvel project during a panel at Ccxp in Brazil earlier this month. There he squashed fan speculation that he’d play Professor X in the widely expected Marvel Cinematic Universe version of “X-Men.”
“There’s something about being original. We’ve seen different versions of Professor X,” Esposito told the crowd. “Wouldn’t you like to see me play a character in a Marvel movie who is original, and new, and fresh? So, mark my words: This will happen sooner than you think.”

Paramount Global’s independent special committee agreed to recommend a revised offer from David Ellison’s Skydance Media, paving a way for the potential merger of his production company with the struggling media conglomerate, according to the Wall Street Journal and other media reports.
The decision, which follows months of negotiations, now puts the fate of the media conglomerate in the hands of controlling shareholder Shari Redstone.
Representatives for Paramount and Skydance declined to comment.
Under Skydance’s initial two-step plan, the company offered around $2 billion to acquire Redstone’s National Amusements, which owns 77% of Paramount’s class A voting stock and 5.2% of its class B common stock. The second step would then see Skydance merge with Paramount to create a combined company valued at around $5 billion.

The Tribeca Festival started in the shadow of Sept. 11, as founders Robert De Niro, his longtime collaborator Jane Rosenthal and real estate investor Craig Hatkoff (at the time married to Rosenthal) attempted to bring commerce and culture back to Lower Manhattan.
In the years since, it has exploded in popularity and importance, with major film premieres and fine discoveries playing every year — now with even more to see and experience.
“There’s always challenges,” Rosenthal said about putting on a festival of the size and complexity of Tribeca. “We were the first festival that came out of Covid. It was great. There’s always challenges, always challenges.”
This year Tribeca is embellished with something else – a complementary festival called De Niro Con, which celebrates the life and career of the Tribeca cofounder that coincides with his 80th birthday. There will be special screenings, conversations and live events.
“I am excited for De Niro Con.

Summertime tends to be a quieter yet exciting period for the average TV viewer, as the broadcast season hiatus leaves room for big streaming and cable offerings to take center stage.
There might be a bit of a decrease in output now that the Emmy submission period is over, but there’s no lack of new and returning shows across broadcast, streaming and cable this summer. While the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris will keep the world’s attention in late july, the return of Amazon’s “The Boys” and HBO’s “House of the Dragon” will surely have fans talking throughout the next few months, while new shows like “Star Wars” spin-off “The Acolyte” on Disney+ and the animated “Terminator Zero” hope to burst into the zeitgeist. Anita Joy, a friend and coworker of “General Hospital” actor Johnny Wactor, shared an eyewitness account of his murder on Thursday, calling for justice and mourning the fact that Wactor was “killed senselessly by a coward.”
She wrote in a detailed Instagram post that she and a security guard from Level 8 in Downtown Los Angeles, where the two worked, were the last to see him alive.
“My friend of eight years went from laughing together, working side by side, leaving our bartending shift and walking to our cars, to him dying in my arms in the streets of Dtla in the dark hours of 3 a.m.,” she wrote.
Recounting the early Saturday morning incident following their May 24 shift at Level 8, Joy said Wactor’s slaying came down to the fact that “a few criminals [were] trying to steal a car part and all they took was my friend’s life.”

While fans have gone wild over the Pitbull cover in “Bridgerton” Season 3’s climactic carriage scene, showrunner Jess Brownell admitted she was “nervous” to see the audience response.
“I picked the Pitbull song and I was a little nervous, because it’s an unusual choice that it might take people out of the scene,” Brownell told TheWrap. “But it’s been so wonderful to see that people have taken to it, that actually it’s given that scene even more depth.”

How to Watch ‘Young Woman and the Sea’: Is Daisy Ridley’s Historical Drama Streaming or in Theaters?
Before she heads back to a galaxy far, far away again, Daisy Ridley is taking to water, with her new film “Young Woman and the Sea.”
Based on the true story of Trudy Ederle, the first woman to swim across the English Channel, Ridley stars as Ederle, taking viewers on her journey through the water. And, if those shots look particularly stunning to you, it could be because the movie also boasts Jerry Bruckheimer as a producer.

Composer Tom Holkenborg looked at his sonic palette for “Mad Max: Fury Road” as a massive rock opera. For the prequel, “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga,” he thought it needed a sonic shift.
Holkenborg, also known professionally as Junkie Xl, lit up a cigarette as he joined Variety from his Amsterdam home and studio to discuss his vision. “The music is commenting on how Furiosa sees the Wastelands and what is happening to her,” he explained. Not only did Holkenborg want the music to feel like a first-person perspective score, he wanted things to be more restrained.
He noted the lack of music for the first six minutes of the film as one example of holding back.
“Furiosa” follows the eponymous heroine, played by Anya Taylor-Joy, who is kidnapped by Chris Hemsworth’s Dementus, a new villain. Dementus and his biker bandits take her across the Wasteland in his quest for dominance.

The fight between Jake Paul and Mike Tyson — to be livestreamed on Netflix — will not take place as originally scheduled for July 20 because of Tyson’s recent ulcer flare-up, the event’s promoter said.
The new date of the fight will be announced by next Friday, June 7, according to Jake Paul and Nakisa Bidarian’s Most Valuable Promotions, which is co-producing the bout with Netflix. The fight, announced in March, will take place at the same venue, AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, sometime later in 2024, according to Mvp.

Live Nation appears to be the victim of a cyber attack.
The Ticketmaster owner says that earlier this month it “identified unauthorized activity within a third-party cloud database environment containing Company data… and launched an investigation with industry-leading forensic investigators to understand what happened.”
The company says the breach was primarily in its Ticketmaster subsidiary. A source familiar with the matter says that the issue was with a third-party server hosted by the cloud computing company Snowflake.
To make matters worse, the company says that it appears data is being offered for sale on the dark web.
“On May 27, 2024, a criminal threat actor offered what it alleged to be Company user data for sale via the dark web,” the company wrote in the SEC filing. “We are working to mitigate risk to our users and the Company, and have notified and are cooperating with law enforcement. As appropriate, we are...

Sam Wilson is back in action this week in Atlanta, where Captain America: Brave New World began a round of additional photography, with a new actor now in the cast.
Giancarlo Esposito, who for a few weeks had hinted at his involvement in a Marvel Studios project, is officially on the call sheet in an undisclosed, but sources say, villainous role.
The shoot will run 22 days, according to insiders. Among the added elements will be some new action sequences. Julius Onah remains the director.
Brave New World has been operating under a hazy shroud ever since it wrapped principal photography in the spring of 2023. The movie, which stars Anthony Mackie as hero Sam Wilson takes up the mantle of Captain America, barely escaped the direct impacts of the writers and actors strikes. Marvel’s other productions — Thunderbolts*, Deadpool & Wolverine and Blade — were forced to shut down or delay production,...

The Spanish language holds a significant presence in the U.S. streaming landscape. As of the first quarter of 2024, Spanish was the foreign language with the highest number of movies available on SVOD platforms in the U.S. and the No. 3 language when it comes to the number of shows available, following Korean and Japanese.
This prominence is not surprising when you consider that Spanish is the second most-spoken language in the U.S., as well as the substantial investment by streaming platforms in Spanish content over recent years. Global successes like “Money Heist” and “Elite” have solidified Spain’s position as one of the top streaming content-producing countries in the world.
Even though the most popular Spanish language-hit shows came from Spain itself, Mexican shows outnumber their Spanish counterparts by more than two to one on U.S. SVOD platforms.
This is largely due to platforms focused on Mexican audiences in the U.

Laura Karpman brought choral sounds into Season 2 of “What If…?” while Natalie Holt re-established the “Loki” theme for the series’ second season. The Newton Brothers entered the Marvel universe by scoring “X-Men ’97,” and Kris Bowers dives into “Secret Invasion.” These are among the composers of Marvel
TV shows vying for Emmy consideration.
Despite telling different stories, each composer worked to bring a score that felt big, epic and exciting — exactly what fans and audiences expect from a Marvel TV show.
Holt knew Season 2 of “Loki” would be darker and that the titular character (Tom Hiddleston) ascending to the throne and becoming a brand-new god.
