Hereditary (2018)
Somewhat disturbing but great suspense
I am not sure if this movie is a typical horror movie - in a review I read it was compared to "the shining", but it is a superb enable of tension - building psycho thriller.
The story offers so many layers that you can easily watch it over again from a different point of view from the protagonists.
I am still not sure, though, what role the dead mother /granny played. I think I have to watch it over again.
The Nun (2018)
OK... If you like solid entertainment
The franchise is coming to an end - it's by far not that scaring as The Conjuring. There are some nice scenes alright, but it all has been there before and it is kind of obvious what will happen at what point. This is not a good movie, but there are way worse.
The Witch in the Window (2018)
Misleading yet intriguing
A father, who lacked presence during the crucial years of development of his son, tries to bond with him while renovating an old mansion. Over time, it turns out that there is some presence in the house - the more father and son work on the house the more remarkable the presence becomes.
The movie is not what you expect from a horror movie with that promising title. In fact, it starts off as family movie, develops into a relationship movie and ends up as suspense movie without gore, blood or violence. Yet, there is a mind-gripping sub story that easily could be misinterpret as a metaphor for the father's live (guilt - refrain - agitation). It is way more. It's certainly not the type of movie you would watch for light entertainment, it is the sheer existentialism of horror movies, almost comparable in its density and structure to It Follows or The Pact.
American Horror Story (2011)
You either love it - or you don't watch it
Since the first episode, I am a big fan of this series. I really love the acting, the performance and the outstanding story telling of that series.
In my personal ranking, I consider Asylum and Roanoke to be the best two seasons due to their epic background and the setting. They are directly followed by Murder House, Freak Show and Coven, although that might actually change after the current season Apocalypse, since there seems to be a twist in the plot of those other episodes...
Cult was an outstanding masterpiece in performance and story, and as some here already pointed out, not a real Horror Story, but a superb part of the American culture, so definitely a part of it. Not the best, though.
Hotel had some great performing, but a great story crippled due to overambitious packing of side stories that made the whole package almost unbearable. I feared that the whole series might have suffered under this, but thanks to the limited links to other series, this was - hopefully - a unique event. Although I have to admit Lady Gaga showed potential.
The Haunting of Hill House (2018)
Intense Supernatural Series With Great Acting
As a fan of the genre I am always looking for series that are enthralling and witty yet without typical effects and the surreptitiously je-ne-sais-quoi of emotional and substantial supernatural experiences.
With The Haunting, I found an inspiring, enthusiastic and promising new series that lives off a tension created by intense story-telling and a dense yet not overloaded atmosphere. There is more below the surface than the pilot promises, the story goes deeper and has a chilling yet captivating story to tell.
The series lives not so much from shocking elements or gore and blood but from a downward spiraling family story without leaving loose ends.
If you are looking for series like AHS season 2 or 6 (intense story telling with surprising twists), you have come to the right place here.
Heilstätten (2018)
Poor performance can't save the good idea
The basic idea of a horror movie revolving around a bunch of YouTube influencer who are searching the next thrill for a couple of likes more is quite good. Even the setting is excellent, and the stories behind the sanitarium have potential. But after 10 minutes into the movie, you get sick by the lame comments and actings of those main characters. All of them are exchangeable, so they leave no impression whatsoever behind. As a matter of fact, you wish they die fast and cruelly. As much as I like setting and atmosphere - which really grows denser the longer the movie takes - at the same time I disliked all of the lead characters, which made the movie unwatchable.
