Ne nous soumets pas à la tentation (2011)
A reconciliation drama seen from three perspectives
I especially liked that it started with the Tristan perspective, leading us to believe that the events happening to him are important.
The two women viewpoints and storylines are what's important (not just a trivial infidelity affair centered around a man), mother and daughter, later revealing that Tristan is just an innocent bystander, really quite unimportant to the main drama.
Elegantly written.
I liked the symmetries:
that the mother and daughter independently, at the same time, started attempts to reach out to each other,
that they in their youth both had/has relationships with toxic men.
I'm not sure that the third symmetry, that they both had sex with each others partners, was really necessary.
There's humour in that also the second male character (Stephán) is totally oblivious, as well as really just a superfluous annoyance.
So true - men are very seldom as important as they believe themselves and they often have no clue what's really going on...
I guess the ending might be a glimpse of hope of future reconciliation, although the daughter ruined her mother's relationship, as intended, and the mother did the same thing to her daughter - maybe they can eventually start fresh again after this, which I like think was the daughter's ultimate goal when she initially approached her mother's husband.
Both men were obstacles to this reconciliation.
The Girl in the Book (2015)
Everyone seems to have different information about Alice's age...
... in these reviews, which is weird.
Alice is 28 years old, and the sexual abuse, that still traumatize her, happened 15 years earlier, when she was 13 years.
City of Trees (2019)
Yes!
I loved the subtle ways of describing Ainsley's feelings when returning to her hometown after living in a big city for several years, the alienation, the mild annoyment with her parents, her inner discomfort and shame when returning home after failing her big city dream as well as her old insecurities from her youth, that are brought to the surface when returning home. However, gradually through the film, she realizes that her imagination of how people in her hometown perceive her is invalid, which is the key to her awakening at the end of the film, and that enables her to take new and vital steps in life.
Well written, acted and directed.
The few things that could be done better could all easily been solved with a larger budget, mainly invested in technology.
Perhaps also scenery and some extras in the class reunion / karaoke scene.
Well done!
Spooks: The Greater Good (2015)
Sexistic script?
I might be wrong, but the relevant women didn't really come off good in this story.
Either killed off, being traitors or blindly following questionable orders.
Hated watching this.
The Perfection (2018)
OK acting, terrible film idea and script
Basically I only liked the first part of the movie, before the twists and the changing into thriller and later horror movie.
The later part of the movie was pointless, rediculously unlikely and offensive.
My advice: see the movie until the bus journey starts, then skip the rest.
Death at a Funeral (2007)
British vs US adaptation
The difference between US and UK movies. This is so much better than the pale US version...
Close (2019)
Slight enjoyment from seeing annoying men being beat up by women
In no way worse than any other action film I've seen. Actually, quite a lot better, mainly because the women in the film did not have passive, redundant roles. Good acting from Rapace and Nélisse.
Normally, the only action movies I can stand are action comedies - this action still get my recommendation, for the reasons mentioned above.
