Babylon (2022)
90 min too long and the "main protagonist" is completely invisible.
There were moments of brilliance in screenwriting, and overall cinematic framing was outstanding. The cast was excellent, though I do not buy the story built around Manuel - he was completely invisible and I only realized half way through the film (wondering who the main character is - Robbie or Pitt) that it's supposed to be Manuel's story. And most importantly, clearly Chazelle did not get constructive feedback on the runtime. Pretty much all of the "plots" in the last 60 min were completely unnecessary and killed the movie dynamics. Despite a great start and an excellent first 1,5h, overall I left the cinema bored and could not wait for the film to end for at least last 60 min. Now that's a wasted potential, with such cast and production.
Nuevo orden (2020)
Disturbing and well done, but lacks some explanations.
Because so little explanation was offered, the movie leaves you with an impression that it was all about the cruelty show. Or, the creators thought the explanation and conclusions will be obvious - they are not. Pity, cause it feels like a lost, flattened out potential because of a lack of an ending that would offer some answers, even if requiring further reflection.
The last sequence is completely confusing and suddenly the movie ends. I feel this could be (was supposed to be?) a cautionary tale about what happens when anarchy prevails and the exchange of "elites" which always quickly get corrupted - but it was not pointed enough in the movie.
The Northman (2022)
Worst and strangest superproduction I have ever seen. People were leaving the cinema.
Random collection of scenes without any truly compelling story; infantile dialogues that cause laughter when they are expected to convey gravity; unclear if this was supposed to be a fantasy movie, a drama, a comedy, a horror, a zombie movie, or LoTR tribute. What a waste of great actors and overall potential. By far the worst movie I have seen in a while.
Don't Look Up (2021)
I went there for DiCaprio, Hill and Lawrence and got all I wanted.
But the Ariana Grande show piece was the most embarrassing product placement I've seen in years. How come this was approved and the this star studded cast said yes to this - will remain a mystery to me.
Scenes from a Marriage (2021)
Absolutely captivating.
Realistic, nuanced, and full of shades.
The emotional intensity is of physical weight - and the acting is just mesmerizing.
I am in awe of every minute of it.
This Is Where I Leave You (2014)
Such a wasted potential.
Great cast, but completely flat, predictable story with one-dimension paper characters. Such a waste of casting. And my time.
Trial by Fire (2018)
Very disappointed.
Too many unnecessary threads were introduced that were only there to fill the time, and were not developed or even explained. Both main characters are just annoying and difficult to relate to.
Little Fires Everywhere (2020)
I was expecting more because of Reese, not the book itself
I only read the book because of Reese - I was sure her new production would be fantastic, and wanted to read the book first. I wasn't blown away by the book, but it was ok - interesting. Mia was only slightly annoying in it, mostly because of her poor choices, but it was Elena who was painted as the black character. It's completely reverse when you watch the show - no matter how pretentious, Elena is a sweetheart next to the always angry/ offended Mia. And frankly, I don't think it's Kerry Washington's acting - it must have been a creative choice to keep it that way - for reasons unknown. Pity. I don't think I'll watch the series till the end, right now I'm only watching it out of sympathy for Reese and the 90's stuff.
