The Nest (2020)
A thriller? No
I don't understand why this movie was described as a thriller. I kept waiting for any sort of thrill. There was zero plot.
Happiest Season (2020)
Why the rush?
I enjoyed the slow pace for the majority of the movie. I'm not sure why there was a rush to resolve everything in the last 15 minutes. It felt forced.
You could certainly do worse on a lazy Christmas vacation afternoon.
Soul (2020)
Surprised people loved this one
I didn't hate this. I was disappointed. I look forward to Pixar movies. Maybe my expectations were just too high.
I would recommend virtually any other Pixar movie over this.
Honest Thief (2020)
Two thumbs down
Unconnected, ridiculous script. Even by Liam Neeson standards. Think Taken with less action and somehow less logic.
Love, Weddings & Other Disasters (2020)
Not even a "good" bad movie
The pain from this disaster is still fresh. So take this with a grain of salt, I may change my mind further removed from the watching...
This is the worst movie I've ever seen. I would recommend this movie to no one. It was nonsensical, not funny, poorly written, haphazardly shot, offensively bad acting. Nothing redeeming.
Abacus: Small Enough to Jail (2016)
Watch it
I want to be careful to ensure my opinion of the doc isn't just my opinion of the subject. I don't think the subjects of the doc are admirable or deserve to be felt sorry for. The doc however, does a good job of introducing the players and explaining each of their association with the bank and family who runs it. I found myself getting distracted by the numerous scenes showing the family talking over each other and communicating nothing. I wanted to know more about the the effect on the trial on the community instead. Although this isn't my favourite doc of the year, I certainly think it's worth a watch.
The Big Sick (2017)
Worth a Watch
I first heard of Kumail Nanjiani when Silicon Valley started. Since then I made an effort to catch a few of his appearances on podcasts and stand up specials. When I first heard he was in an upcoming movie I suspected a light comedy. When I heard more about the movie I learned the basic plot and wasn't sure what to make of it. I finally got around to actually watching the movie over the weekend. I really enjoyed it. I found myself cringing and laughing at the same time. Definitely worth a watch.
Winchester (2018)
Skip it
I saw this because the movie I wanted to see was sold out. I was already at the movies and I have moviepass so I took a chance. The movie is bad. Like it's bad for a horror movie bad. For some reason it as a PG-13 rating which means they basically cut out everything that might have been scary. I had to stifle a laugh near the middle of the movie. Not because the movie was funny. But because I was laughing at myself for seeing it.
Do yourself a favour and skip this one.
The Post (2017)
Meryl Streep
The story is incredible. Meryl Streep was incredible. Don't miss it.
Strong Island (2017)
I wanted this to be The Thin Blue Line
I wanted this to be The Thin Blue Line. It wasn't. That's a pretty high bar for a doc. I was probably being unfair. But I was disappointed. The families rage at the murder of their son/brother came through. But the story of what happened didn't. It just felt like rage. Understandable, but not what I want in a doc.
Molly's Game (2017)
Aaron Sorkin spun another great story
I really liked this film. Aaron Sorkin spun another great story. I very rarely read a book a movie is based on after seeing the film itself. However, I was motivated to make an exception in this case.
Lady Bird (2017)
I have nothing but good things to say
I was sucked into this movie immediately. Saoirse Ronan was excellent. I found myself cheering for her and cringing for her almost simultaneously. Laurie Metcalf was perfect. I have nothing but good things to say.
Icarus (2017)
Favourite Doc of the year
The story is great. The Russians are cheaters. Watch this.
Get Out (2017)
Why do people love this movie so much?
I don't get it. Why do people love this movie so much? Daniel Kaluuya was certainly great. But the movie itself was a b slasher at best. The social commentary is interesting but repetitive. I feel like this would have been a really great five minute component of something else.
The Shape of Water (2017)
Weirder than you think... no trust me it's weirder than you think
I went into this expecting to see a weird story and some incredible cinematography. I was right. Kinda. The cinematography was awesome. The movie was weird. But it was way weirder than I thought. But the cinematography was awesome!
Dunkirk (2017)
I wanted more
I really wanted to like this more. I find the story itself fascinating. Evacuating hundreds of thousands using practically anything that would float across the english channel is pretty remarkable. What was less remarkable was the movie itself. I didn't find myself becoming attached to the main characters. I felt myself wishing the focus would switch to some of the background characters who looked like they had more interesting stories to tell.
I, Tonya (2017)
Margot Robbie and Allison Janney
After seeing the preview I knew I would love this. Margot Robbie and Allison Janney were both impressive. I have to say, I was really surprised by Robbie! I checked out a few interviews with the real Tonya and her mother. Seems like Robbie and Janney really nailed them.
Darkest Hour (2017)
Gary Oldman is Amazing
I really enjoyed this film. I feel like Churchill has been done, and done again, but I'll always be drawn into a movie about him. Gary Oldman has be convinced I was watching Churchhill himself.
Oh and the movie itself was really great too!
Phantom Thread (2017)
Meh
I'll start by admitting the target market for this film isn't me. But I like Daniel Day Lewis and I've got a moviepass. I enjoyed parts of the movie, but not many. The character played by Lewis is bizarre and, to me not at all interesting or likeable. Unfortunately I didn't find any of the other characters to be captivating either.
I did think the movie "looked" cool. I thought they perfectly drew me into the location and time period. Post war London in the 50s just looks cool to me. Other people seem to like it but I couldn't get into it.
The 15:17 to Paris (2018)
Watch this to renew your appreciation for professional actors!
Going into this I didn't have high expectations. If you haven't heard, the "stars" of the film aren't actors. They are the guys who actually lived the story. I knew this going into the film, and I was still shocked at how jarring an experience it was to watch regular guys act on the big screen. Don't get me wrong, I certainly couldn't do any better. Not to mention, I haven't done anything in my life anyone should make a movie about.
So why did I see this? Well I have moviepass and had nothing to do on a Saturday at noon. So here we are. Unless you are in a similar situation I would recommend you pass.
