Inside Job (2021)
Very disappointing and a let down
The show starts pretty well. Obviously it has strong Rick and Morty vibes. But the hype and fun runs off very quickly. Season 1 is decent but season 2 managed to make every mistake a sitcom does.
Two of the main mistakes are :
- trying to install a forced continuity
- a love story
As the story goes, the character becomes more and more human which removes all the fun.
And the main topic (conspiracies) completely disappears.
I heard this show got cancelled and to be honest, it's dor good reasons.
Unlike Rick and Morty, the characters aren't likeable. There's no epic moment. And you don't care what is going to happen next.
I wish I skipped this show earlier.
High Score (2020)
A weird attempt at a documentary
This series takes a different approach on the "history of videogames", which in a way is refreshing. But as you watch it, something seems off.
It spends too much time on frivolous things. The narrating voice is a bit annoying (no offense intended). And the whole "let's interview people in their living rooms makes for very boring set ups.
But worst of all, they managed to shove some lgbt and blm messages in this... which feels really forced and unnecessary. We want to watch a story, not an agenda.
Disappointing, I'd recommend skipping this show. Some YouTube channels made a better job at telling the same story.
Space Force (2020)
Good actors and bad writing
Really unfunny show. No idea how they can make something so horrible when they have Steve Carell and John M. As a huge fan of the office, it hurts to watch this.
2 minutes into season and I already regret giving this show a 2nd chance.
Captain Marvel (2019)
Reshoot with Emily Blunt please
If you've seen the trailers, you've seen the movie: super strong female alien ends up on earth and kick some asses.
This is basically a crossover between captain america if he was an alien. Or thor if he joined the army.
Never liked Brie Larson and it's even worse now. Do yourself a favor and go watch a movie with Emily Blunt if you want to see a blond who can kick ass AND act!
Green Book (2018)
A UFO
Sometimes you don't even hear about a movie and just notice it is in theaters, with two actors you like and a nice poster. So you go see it and it comes out of nowhere and turns out to be AMAZING.
Just go see it in a legal way, this movie is worth it.
Bohemian Rhapsody (2018)
Enjoyable and over rated
Good movie but clearly over hyped. Still pretty epic in theaters. Not sure it's worth the watch in your laptop screen and speakers though.
The Meg (2018)
Not funny, not scary, not pretty
My title says it all, this movie clearly has no idea what it is doing here.
Even if you take this movie for what it is, it's objectively bad, very bad.
The CGI is uninspired and laughable. I was at least expecting a few epic shots or scenes like in the recent Kaiju movies but no. All the CGI looks like CGI.
Or you could at least expect a scary or epic soundtrack to build up the tension, but no, it's empty.
If it's not a comedy, not a scary movie and not a gory movie, what was that supposed to be? They make a few jokes to release the tension like in a Marvel movie, but there's no tension at all, so the jokes just flop and are just embarrassing
.
I guess they blew all the money on the casting. That being said, Jason Statham is doing his thing, speaking in a low voice that you can barely understand to look badass... every character is forgettable anyway.
Even if I knew I was going to watch something bad, I was not expecting it to be this bad and boring.
Skip it.
Transformers: Age of Extinction (2014)
Embarrasing to watch
Yes, we know Transformers movies aren't great, but even as someone who can appreciate 1 and 2, this number 4 is just horrible.
You'd think Bay would listen a bit to what people have to say about the first 3 movies and take that into account but no. Or maybe he did and somehow managed to enhance everything that was wrong with the previous movies and crank it into one movie.
The most generic actors you can get (yes, even you poor Mark, Texan overprotective father), the CGI isn't as good as it used to be, probably because they're trying too hard to make original looking stuff. And remember Sam's parents being embarrassing for 5 minutes? Well, in this movie, the Mark manages to be embarrassing through the entire movie. You want to see a father tell his super hot 17 years old daughter she can't have a boyfriend, in the middle of a fight for their lives? Yep, that's how low it sinks.
Do yourself a favor and skip this, and if you really need to watch robots punch each other, go watch Transformers 1 or Pacific Rim.
Edge of Tomorrow (2014)
What a surprise
First time I saw it in theaters, I had no idea what I was going to: "action flick with Tom Cruise? Urrr fine, let's check it out", and wow. The movie is clearly above your average unknown action movie, it has something special.
I mean, there's Tom Cruise, a war and action, and it's based on a manga, this movie had all chances to be dumb as F but they somehow managed to make something pleasant to look at!
I can't judge this movie based on its source material since I've never read it, but as a standalone movie it holds up.
Whether you like him or not, Tom Cruise is very convincing and Emily Blunt seems to be built for tough roles, she looks pretty badass.
Plot is pretty cool for the first half of the movie, then it goes a bit downhill imo because the element or surprise is gone but still fun to look at.
Pulp Fiction (1994)
Just watch it
The dialogues, the silences, the music, the CAST, the shots, this is how you make a movie.
Having watched every Tarantino films, I still don't know how he can make dialogue scenes so captivating.
This is a 1994 masterpiece and it doesn't even deserve my review, there's tons of good reviews out there, go watch it.
Annihilation (2018)
disappointing, boring, cheap
One day I asked "scifi movie releases 2018" and this came up, nice poster, scifi, natalie portman and oscar isaac... hell yeah!
It gave me expectations but failed to deliver real hard.
Visually it's kinda interesting but you can see it's a small production as every trick in the book is used to compensate for the cheap CGI... over saturation, weird blurs... overall very CGI looking CGI. Some things look good, the "universe" in itself looks good but to me, it was wayyy too far behind what our eyes are used to these days. A good way to sum up the visuals would be: Avatar fanfiction.
The plot is almost original but it's nothing new and feels like déjà vu. They built the film in the "let's interview the survivor" way, which imo spoils a lot of itself! Really a bad decision. Plus it feels rushed and the all female cast is questionable. The argument is "we only sent male military crews, now, we'll send a female scientist crew!"... How about... a military crew escorting scientists? Instead of giving a bunch of PhD females an assault rifle that they clearly can't use.
I wanted to make a "soundtrack" part but I don't remember a single one so, either there's no music, either it's forgettable. I think there's no music which is fine for this kind of movie but when you have soundtracks like Bladerunner 2049, Interstellar, Dunkirk even... you can't help but think that something is missing.
Anyway, in the end it feels like a small production that Natalie Portman has to carry on her shoulders for 100min. There are interesting and disturbing moments but it's a bit boring and the characters don't help you like this movie.
It it was released in a cinema and I had paid 10$ to see it, my note would probably be even lower.
Sicario (2015)
What the ... ?
I have no idea why this movie got such a high rating. I really wanted to see it and I was really disappointed when I did.
It's not stupid or horrible, it's just empty. This is probably going to be my shortest review ever because I have nothing good nor bad to say about it, it's just 2 hours of talking with a 2min gunfight. Which would be kinda fine if the trailer and the poster wasn't trying to sell you an action thriller...
Black Panther (2018)
Over hyped, weak for a marvel, Thor with black people
This movie might deserve more than a 4 (probably not) but I'm harsh because of the 7.8 it clearly doesn't deserve.
The movie was a bland origin hero story. It had so much more potential, they decided to play it safe.
Acting and cast: I thought the cast was pretty interesting! I do like the king, his "evil" cousin and some other people (that guy who played in black mirror, bike episode), they seem to have potential and charisma. Buuuut they had horrible lines and flat one sided roles. A good thing this movie did is open our eyes on some actors that will rise in the future. But probably not in a Black panther 2, marvel isn't good at that (Iron man 2 ewwww... Thor 2 yurk...)
CGI and effects: well, there goes your expectations. Since Iron man 1, I've always been shocked by how realistic the CGI looks. Even in the avengers, Iron man and his buddy look so real and physically present. In this movie, it's gone. The CGI is on a DC movie level (I love DC but their CGI.... urrr). Every shot smells green screen, every fight and flying ship scene looks like a game cinematic. Very bad.
Again, so much potential from African landscapes... wasted behind an obvious green screen for 2h straight.
Music... is forgettable. I remember the first time I heard the avenger's theme. Well, I will never remember the soundtrack of this movie.
Plot and dialogues. Zero surprises. Good guy, bad guy, bad guy kicks good guy's ass, good guy get his powers back and win the second fight.. the end.
Clearly the movie was over hyped by the black cast thing. The movie is, literally just Thor, but black. Don't believe me? Okay, hear this: the prince of a hidden kingdom has to prove he is worthy of his superpowers in order to become king and has to fight his evil sibling. Black Panther or Thor?
Godzilla (2014)
If you want to fall asleep on your couch, watch it
The movie doesn't even deserve a proper review.
Trailers were just false advertising. You thought you were gonna watch a fight between Heisenberg with an awesomely detailed CGI Godzilla? Nope. Trailers have more of those two than the actual movie.
Casting is horrible. Main actor is empty, Olsen and Cranston are completely "under-used". They're clearly just names in the credit scene.
Visually it could have been awesome but no, they decided to hide all the monsters and action in fog, darkness, water, like those 80s horror movie where you didn't see the monster because they couldn't make one.
Plot is urrrrr. Movie starts really well, Cranston, a nuclear power plant, then the movies falls apart rather quickly.
It's sad because that movie was hyped, like I said mainly because the trailers were cool.
Save yourself some time (and money), don't watch.
Terminator Genisys (2015)
Avoid this movie if you want to live
Let's be honest, this movie probably deserves more than a 2 but since it's linked to an epic franchise that it manages to "cancel" by playing around with the timeline, it gets a 2.
I have no idea why would anyone write that and think it's a good idea to tell terminator's fans that what they know never happened or will never happen.
Remember all those epic lines from T1 and T2? Or even some cheesy lines from T3? Well, you'll forget this movie as soon as you watch it. It's an empty random action movie that manages so sink lower than T3.
Soundtracks, I can't remember any of them.
Casting is a joke. Emilia Clarke is... well she's gorgeous alright but should she play Sarah Connor? Probably not. She's even a bit annoying.
Jason Clarke as John Connor what the... no, just no.
Surprisingly, the korean actor Byung-hun Lee is probably the best thing this movie has. He does feel a bit scary, he does recreate that feel we got from the T1000 in T2. But that's just my opinion.
This is clearly just a franchise money milking. Don't watch it, or watch it and give it a 1 star review.
Bright (2017)
Not very bright
You know those parody of Adam Sandler movie trailers that go like "Adam Sandler is just an ordinary man, but one day he wakes up as a carrot! This summer, prepare for blablablabla".
Well, that's this "Will Smith is a cop, but one day, he wakes up with an Orc as his partner!"
Anyways, no idea where Will Smith is going but his end career doesn't look very bright.
Rogue One (2016)
A good surprise - no spoilers
To put this into context: before I saw this movie, I was against the idea of this movie (milking the franchise), I didn't like the main actress because I didn't really see her in the role of a badass violent rebel spy and we didn't see to know any of the characters in the trailers (except Mon Mothma).
Well, that movie shut me up for 2 hours.
It's a bit messy in the beginning, many new characters, planets, and you change scene every 3min.
But the second half of the movie is glorious.
Soundtracks are epic, especially the music for the last 10 minutes. No spoiler but you know which soundtrack I mean, and if not, it's called "your father would be proud".
Visually it's wow, nothing to envy to what would call "a real star wars". The last battle (no spoiler I swear) has really really cool and good shots.
Casting is good, Felicity Jones was a good surprise and so was Diego Luna. The droid and whoever is "inside" is pretty good too. He drops like 1 or 2 jokes but overall, there's no humor.
Which leads me to my last point: it's not funny. People are dying, the rebels are seen as terrorists, there is no Anakin line "This is where the fun begins", it's not funny Anakin, we're at war god damn it! People aren't smiling, they're sad, dirty, there's few hope. it's pretty dark and I love it.
Just a small points about the last scene (go watch it) which I can't spoil... wow. We all wanted to see this since we were kids. It's a bit of fan service but who cares, it was glorious.
Ignore the last jedi and go watch this.
Future Man (2017)
What am I watching?
I was really reluctant to watch this show because the plot looked ridiculous and I don't like the main actor... but I was sick, stuck in bed, so I tried.
After 30 seconds, I almost closed the first episode and I told myself "okay, let's see if this stupidity is on purpose"
Turned out it's what they were going for: a stupid, rude, gross, over the top show, with a geeky mood to it.
I don't even know what to say, but it's entertaining and somehow you get attached to the main characters. You want to know how this ends.
The good thing is, this doesn't follow the recent tend of (Game of thrones, walking dead): a boring episode with a 30 seconds cliffhanger at the end to keep you watching. There's stuff going on during the episodes. They do end in cliffhangers but still, there's action in the middle.
Go watch with a pizza and beer.
Transformers: The Last Knight (2017)
Even among the Transformers movie, this is bad
What do you want to see when you go watch a Transformers movie? Some epic robots fight with epic music and over the top action.
I do like Transformers 1. I'm okay with 2nd... and a little less okay with 3rd... but this is the result of a franchise going downward from 1 to... is it the 5th?
There's nothing left to save. If you're a transformers enthusiast, you remember the epic OST "arrival on earth" from Transformers 1. You remember Optimus fake dying in the 2nd. You won't remember a thing from The Last Knight and it's for the best.
Save yourself 2h, go rewatch Transformers 1.
Life (2017)
What did you expect? Read the plot
I don't understand why this movie get bad reviews. The plot clearly says that it's an alien in a ship. Nowhere it is said that there's something deep to it or whatever. It wasn't marketed as Avatar, nor The avengers 7.
It's a movie about scientists discovering an alien form, they study it, it goes wrong, period.
There's a small sci-fi touch to it which I like. The alien's appearance is original. You get scared but they don't spam jump scares. It's a cute little alien in a ship movie, who would have probably gotten a more attention and better reviews 30 years ago.
Kong: Skull Island (2017)
Avoid at all cost
My biggest regret of 2017, spending 7.5 euros on this.
The laziest attempt at Kong I've seen in a while. There's a bunch of cool scenes but overall, it's bad, very bad. Samuel L Jackson in on a snakes on the plane level. Tom Iddle... Hidle... Loki is just an actor bait "wow, it's that Loki guy, let's go watch the movie".
Not of it makes sense, it's poorly written, if you can consider it written at all. The only reason I didn't give 1 star to this huge scam was Kong himself, which looks good.
War for the Planet of the Apes (2017)
Surprising
Just to be clear, my title is "surprising" because I didn't see the 2 previous movies when I saw that one. (Now I have).
Anyway, a big surprise, Planet of the Apes movies are always a huge risk, a risk to be a cringeworthy fest of talking Apes.
But not here, they did it. The Apes are humans enough for you to actually care and root for them. The balance between sign language and talking is perfect. The CGI is bluffing, I couldn't tell the difference between a real ape or a CGI one. Although we have to admit, only the main ape characters look "original". The crowds are always a bit generic.
The downside to me is the plot, no spoilers but the whole colonel thing and his role... not very interesting. That's the only reason I didn't give 8 stars.
After watching this movie, I immediately (yes, I swear) went and watched 1&2.
Forget Mark Walhberg, go watch this.
Blade Runner 2049 (2017)
I'll be short
I won't make a long review because when you make a good exam, a 10/10, the teacher just gives you your exam and say "good job, well done". Well same here.
Music is weird but fits perfectly to the movie (somehow I've tried listening to the ost but without the movie it's really not the same).
Visuals are daring, okay some shots are hidden in fog and rain, but overall, they show you what you want to see. What bladerunner 1 struggled to deliver because of the technical limitations of the time.
Acting is kind of a tricky question. Is Ryan Gosling a good actor or not? We all know he shows few emotions and, that's what we needed him to do in this movie. But I'm not correct by saying this, he shows anger, doubt, in a pretty good way.
Jared Leto is interesting in this role, maybe not seen enough though.
And Ana de Armas. She's one of those supermodels who ended up acting if I'm not mistaken. I haven't seen her in other roles but, she's a gorgeous fantasy doll and again, that's what they needed for the role. It worked.
The plot worked. I will stay spoiler less in this review so I will just say that, I didn't see that coming.
If you like Sci-fi, or the whole "AI/humanity" subject, if you like amazing visuals, strange soundtrack or you want just want to see Ana de Armas, go see the movie. Legally if possible because they do deserve the credit.
It (2017)
Success
This movie succeeds in scaring you without spamming jump scares. It builds a presence, suspense and thrills. The simple sight of the clown scares you, you want him to go away, you want the scene to be over so we can go back to the "day time" when everything is normal.
That's pretty much what I ask from a horror movie: scare me without jump scares.
They did an amazing job on "it", although I haven't read the book so I can't judge him compared to the book. But that's the scariest clown I've ever seen. Very good balance between practical and CGI.
Although probably not as deep as the book (which again I haven't read), the movie manages to be a horror movie and finds some time to tell you some side stories. The most disturbing one being of course the redhead and her father. Well, the bully stabbing his father is pretty disturbing too but oh well. Because of this, the characters are build enough to not be "scary movie casualties". You know them a little.
Anyway, it's a horror movie so don't expect the movie of the year but probably the horror movie of the year 2017. I was slightly disappointed by the ending, a bit easy to me (yes I know about the gangbang thing in the book since my girlfriend read it and told me about it but no that's not what I was asking for) but it works.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017)
What went wrong?
Volume 1 was, to me, a good surprise. This one, the other way around.
I'll make it short: the first one was kinda "ha, this is original right? You didn't expect that now did you?"
This movie starts good and inevitably falls in the "big evil guy who wants to destroy the universe, we have to stop him".
So, some guy wants to destroy the world, our heroes unite their powers, but only the hero can defeat him, there's a sacrifice, let's celebrate and go home.
And something I can't stand is, the racoon stealing the expensive things that the beginning almost got everyone killed and is the whole reason the movie went this way. Just because an idiotic CGI racoon acted like an idiot, they clearly almost died. A bit too much.
There's really not much to say about this movie. Like volume 1, but meh.
