X (2022)
A solid horror slasher film, but nothing all that great. Slightly above mediocre.
This movie does a wonderful job at putting you into the 70s. I appreciated how the vintage porno aspect synchronizes with the horror elements of the film somewhat. Makes for a potentially awkward viewing with family. The acting is pretty solid. Overall worth a watch if you are a fan of the genre. My major complaints are actually the aesthetic depiction of the elderly couple. I get the selling point of having the same actor do both the star and the elderly women, but the prosthetics were too much, and I really think it would have been just as effective having actual elderly actors playing those roles. Many scenes were deliberately filmed to hide some of their facial expressions, since they had limited expression because of the make-up. Why not have an elderly couple that could have provided more realistic emotion, without all that silicone and over-done ghastliness? Would've been significantly creepier. Over all it was okay.
The Passenger (2023)
Decent nail-biter
I think Kyle Gallner does a fine job, there are a quite few lines that feel a little unrealistic, but he sells them pretty well. I think a lot of credit should go to Johnny Birchtold as Randy, the nerves and anxiety seeped into my pores and made me cringe a little. He did a wonderful job being the anxious and indecisive hostage that ultimately had to face his fears and address the things that made him who he was. He aced the whole premise of the movie. I do wish Bensons character was a little more open. I think as the more interesting character, his history should have been revealed more. Why go through the whole pounding of his past teacher without any justification, as leading up to that point, his horrific actions had some form of justice to them. I just think as an antihero there shouldve been more behind the violence. Good movie, good cinematography, decently paced.
Scavengers Reign (2023)
Go ahead and indulge yourself in this modern masterpiece of sci-fi animation
I seldom leave reviews, but this series prompted me to do so. This is such a creative achievement of animation and storytelling. This alien planet is so full of wonderfully engaging creatures, flora, and fauna that scratch a specific itch for anyone into this sort of stuff. Every new interaction that the human characters have with the life-forms of the planet is an unpredictable and suspenseful treat. The story is engaging, the voice acting is great, and the pace is just right. The world exudes a mysterious complexity as multiple characters traverse across different biomes to reach the ship that they all crash-landed from. There's some human drama, but the real dilemma is the alien life they face. This is one of those increasingly rare instances of collaborative media that makes me proud of people for being so damn imaginative.
